Does Tales of the Penitent Thief count ? The fm feels more like a RPG/adventure game that what you usually see in Thief fms.

I just finished The Violent End of Duncan Malveine though honestly I did a bit of random guessing between the 3 suspects I thought were guilty. I thought t was the eldest daughter or priest since the autopsy said Duncan died from a blunt strike to the head unaware so I'd thought one of them used a hammer but the murder happened in the garden so the second son was also a suspect. I chose the sewers to enter from so I never went outside into the gardens where I probably would've found a bloody shovel or something since it was the son who did it. I ended up framing the lawyer because the clues I found hinted that he was the one blackmailing the doctor wanting to steal the diamond himself.

(not the original poster, just trying to help you)
- You probably does't need to uninstall the game, just reapplying the patch should be enough (I think all the patches does is copying the relevant binaries from the NewDark package, no windows registry or similar sheannigans involved)
- you can try to copy your user.bnd from T2 to T1 if you want to have the same commands, didn't tried myself but I would be really surprised if those files were incompatible between T1 and T2
- if the game launches, it's safe to assume that the patch is working.
- if versioning really bother you, you should have a release_notes.txt file in your Thief directory for this.

Depends what version you got, the gog version comes with NewDark preapplied. Tfix Lite is just the latest version of NewDark (1.27) with some DML fixes (although voodoo47 still added some stuff like colored lights for red alarms but you can actually go through each dml in notepad and see the changes are generally minor. An easy way to test if you're not using TFix and just lite is if Cragscleft doesn't have weird 3D clouds and is just a traditional skybox. Also you should clean up your user.bnd with notepad and remove the frogbeast binds and stuff.

L'oeuvre au Noir, as well as most of her novels (not true for her poesy and theatrical pieces) are generally much more anchored in historical verisimilitude, thought - even when she is describing fictional events.
The New Weird genre of fiction is the closest I've read from what T1 and T2 attempt to do with the setting.
Some fms also do some interesting things, some times - like Into the Odd channeling a mix of Théophile Gautier's dreamlike symbolist style with Clark Ashton Smith-like Weird Fantasy.

The custom animations/scripting, the level sizes, the modified player detection box, the aimlessness of some of the mission objectives, and the story. I can respect that it's impressive on a technical level with the size of levels and detail packed into it but things like custom objects where you can clearly see the normals are fucked up causing smoothing issues compared to original assets, custom assets that are lower fidelity than the original ones from 1998, and a main character that sounds like he's taking it up the ass every time he mantles onto something. At one point in a mission, I bumped into a horse and watched it stutter and jerk around for a solid 20 seconds trying to turn and face me when I bumped into it in a stall. Also it uses so many T2 assets I don't think it can even be called a love letter to TDP. It definitely didn't look and feel like the originals even if the story is basically following every beat of the original. Not the worst thing ever but it felt jarring when seeing all the mass 10/10s it got (some of which admit they didn't even beat the thing).

>> No.10830404

I really loved it.

I think It was a nice mix of Thief 1 and 2. I like many of the ambient sounds from other s games and how they fit the City.

It was never a 10\10 to me, but a 9 or 8 if one wants to be pissy.

Lacks a mission about the necromancers. Everything else I think was solid, mission design and layout.

As for humans sometimes I sue them to kill a rogue\bandit, my canon Garrett, or the way i play it, I have no beef bonking rogues or killing them if found, and just trying to flashbomb guards since their are poor saps doing their job.

As for servants I try to avoid them, and for others sometimes i may bonk them if discovered.

I love how LGS nailed the arrows so well in a game that had no analogues before. All arrows are super useful. I used to hoard a bit, but now I use items a lot.

>> No.10834059

Garrett's canon is that killing any human while on the job is unprofessional even if for personal reasons. Like in Thief 2 when you find out that the mechanists slaughtered the pagan village you're still not allowed to kill them. If I was able to do it myself and have a team I'd make an FM that was as big as TBP that takes place chronically through both Thief 1 and 2, the first 5 levels would be during T1 and the later 5 levels would be during T2. Also as a hammerite the FM would be more combat based and maybe even in some levels there could be a boss fight, like during the last mission for the T1 missions you end up fighting Viktoria while Garrett is in the Maw dealing with the Trickster.

I'm the guy that was shooting off mission ideas for it, I wouldn't really go overboard with it, a mission with a custom player with a possibly different gameplay style would already be a lot
I'd imagine at minimum you'd want to make it a little more combat focused
I guess it'd be more adventure-y, more treasure hunting/retrieving artifacts/going on a pilgrimage/going to a dangerous place to fix something, like some little machine room deep underneath the city, and you'd do more fighting than sneaking
Thinking about it I really like that idea of descending into the depths of the city to fix some crummy old machinery and making your way back out
I guess if we're ignoring how feasible such a multi-mission project would be then my pitches would be that cliffside monastery zombie-killing adventure and that descent-below-the-city mission

Basically its when iam in light the shadows turn darker, and when in darkeness the eye adapts and i can see the outline of the textures in darkness and objects. Like hidden levers.

Actually, in a theoretical FM where you're playing as a hammerite, it could be fun if hammers had different priorities for who to kill and not kill on missions
Like for garrett in hard/expert it's usually about either not killing servants/innocents or just not killing anybody at all, hammers could have some sort of extra directive about not killing restless dead, because of vaguely religious reasons, maybe you could even have them not care as much about killing people that attack them, that'd flip it on it's head a bit
That sort of approach would certainly be conductive towards making a bigger focus on tomb-raiding and otherwise adventuring missions more interesting gameplay-wise
The only hitch is that they don't have any qualms about making the cragscleft zombies explode, but maybe this limitation would just be a thing the player character personally sticks to, on expert of course

I find the Mechanists even more eery than Satan himself in some ways. He wants death and chaos but hes a God. Supernatural.

But Karras is human evil. Cult transhumanist egomaniacal madness. The robots in the cutscenes are even creepier the Dark engine just does not make them justice.

Not to mention the servants, the breathing ambient sounds. And the cut robots like the spiders and all the others.

I can see an European 16 century town everywhere for sure, many FMs doubled down on that even more than LGS.

I also disliked TBP although for different reasons. It felt like the maps where designed with a "graphic whore" mindset in mind first, where they packed so many details and gimmicks but forgot what made Thief gameplay fun. There's no exploration to be had in most maps, the most insulting is the first one where you get a cityscape but all that verticality is purely cosmetic, you don't even get a rope arrow to explore it. You either get it or you dont, the crazy amount of love the franchise has with FMs speaks for it, outside the great tone and story\sound design, its all about the exploration and stealth.

I do agree that if you play like a neanderthal bonking every guard, I think maybe amping up the guard and enemy difficult would make things more tense.

The formula could have grown even bigger for sure without turning into predator dishonored stealth.

Thief is trying something too soon almost VR very nuanced slow gameplay focused around trying to be well, a D&D rogue. About sound and atmosphere.

you just described the thief formula. even if ai worked the way it should and it wasn't so easily exploitable and the blackjack wasn't such an overpowered piece of shit, thief gameplay is at its core incredibly bare bones. you can really see that in fms too, they don't even bother with stealth shit anymore and instead just focus on "exploration", which basically boils down to having you comb every square inch of a level looking for anchor points for your rope arrows so you can get that juicy +5 gold or maybe some lame readable about a corrupt nobleman or some shit.

I guess the best thing about this era, is that this crash is turning it into what it used to be. A niche genre.

https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/warren-spector-says-the-next-logical-step-for-immersive-sims-is-multiplayer
>warren spector's still prattling on about his doomed live service thief clone to an audience of virtually no one
>otherside hasn't gone bankrupt yet and actually managed to secure more funding from retarded swedes
>he somehow conned greg lopiccolo of all people into working on this
>he insists on doubling down on his new online game fetish despite a gdc survey from the SAME DAY reporting that 70% of [current year] devs are concerned over live service games' sustainability
i can't wait for us to suffer another underworld ascendant-tier disaster in the next few years, assuming warren hasn't gone totally senile and forgotten how to release videogames :DDDD

As I said above.

Does not matter in which form either woke or this, its all vanity.

Warren has always been a moron. His idea of "immersive sim" has always been inane bullshit like stacking a hundred medkits to jump over a wall and he had the audacity to pretend Epic Mickey was anything like the Looking Glass games people associate the "immersive sim" design philosophy with. Harvey is a fag but he deserves a lot of the credit for Ion Storm games being good.

Sounds like stealth was never a priority for him, but emergent gameplay. Who was that one guy that said his dream game was a small neighborhood one-to-one with reality? That'd be a nice place to sneak around in but I bet most players would just spend time raping or killing NPC's. Pure stealth is the niche of niches.

He never liked stealth games. He was butthurt he couldn't just kill all the guards in Thief.

How do you feel about DarkMod? I just played Iris. It was quite a good map, definitely in top 10 of all FM.

I like it a lot and it gets better with every update. I'd recommend getting the fresnel mod on moddb as well.

Anybody else only ever play Thief in the dark/at night?

i do
the main reason is my monitor is directly in front of a window and during the day there's a huge glare which prevents me from seeing shit
of course it also helps with immersion and my house is more quiet during the night

Coming at T2X with a fresh mindset and ignoring all the hype that gets piled on it's pretty good even if the story is early 2000s hot topic fantasy core
