Are text games (specifically MUDs) suitable for discussing here?

>> No.1082379

They would be if anyone played them.

>> No.1082414

>>1082326
They're retro style, but most of them are post-2000 games, so it's hard to say.

I used to play HellMOO and HATEMOO quite a bit, but over time they get too grindy and I quit, only to restart a couple years later. I'm trying to stay off the text crack this time around.

Never really got into any other MUDs/MOOs.

Better turn right back around, son.

I played Achaea for a while, it's very immersive and the community is friendly. Just meeting several dudes in the wilderness and going on adventures while roleplaying all the time is cool as shit.
They really eat up time, though.

Yeah, the ones up there are the main ones I play now. I agree with you on HellMOO but every now and again while I'm doing my stuff it strikes me how hilarious it is that an average day consists of raping orphans, dismembering dead bodies and crashing airplanes.

>> No.1082449

>>1082379
What are you talking about? HellMOO has an average of about 60 players at any given time.

>> No.1082493

Zandronum is a post-2000 fork of a pre-2000 game. If Zandronum is retro, then so is HellMOO by the same logic (fork of LambdaMOO).

>> No.1083141

I've had a lot of fun with the DiscWorld MUD, but like the rest it does get awfully grindy.

For clarification.

also it'd be cool if there was enough of a MUD community that we could make a group somewhere. A corp in HellMOO, a clan in Lusternia, a whatever in Discworld...

babby here, what exactly is a MUD? They seem somewhat interesting, even though I was never much into text games.

A MUD is essentially a multiplayer text game. Think Zork but with griefers.

>> No.1085006

I got into Hellmoo from a /v/ thread about it. That game seems to get mentioned on this site all the time for some reason. It was fun but I mostly just enjoyed exploring around and finding new places. Not really into leveling characters

You can talk with other people, fight them, trade with them, etc. Most of them have ways that you can design/make shit so you can have player-run economies too.

The one pictured is Achaea, which while fun is actually pretty p2w (along with the other Iron Realms MUDs: Imperian, Lusternia, Aetolia and Midkemia).

I also play HellMOO but haven't been on it in a long time. If you want any tips in HellMOO, the IRE's or Carrion Fields I can point you in the right direction.

Well I just have absolutely no idea on where to start.

Take a look at the ones listed and let me know which one strikes your fancy; I can tell you a little more about it.

As for the websites:

www.ironrealms.com
http://www.carrionfields.net/
http://hellmoo.org/

Oh, you'll also need a client. I use MUSHClient.

They aren't very big downloads and don't use up a noticable amount of system resources. You use them to connect to the game server (although the Iron Realms MUDs have a passable on-site client).

Goddamn, I feel like an advertiser. pls no ban

do you have to telnet or is there another interface available? Never heard about Multiplayer text games, thanks for the tip

Pretty sure telnet's the only way to go. I've never really experimented.

Used to play Shattered Kingdoms for many years. If you don't mind enforced roleplay and dying a lot, it's easily one of the most immersive worlds I've played in any game, not just MUDs.

Also I used Fire Client to connect, but zMud is usually the standard from what I remember. For mac Atlantis is pretty good.

>>1085073
Oh yeah. I'm the o ther guy who's been posting. I dipped my toe into Shattered Kingdoms but didn't really get hooked. That was a year ago, though; if I ever get itchy soles I might give it another go.

Anything you could tell me about it?

I got into this one yesterday upon seeing the thread. Kind of hard to get into but holy fuck the things you can do. The things you can fucking do.

See above. Fucking people is a skill you can level up.

YOU MISOGYNIST PIECES OF holy fuck let's hope the feminists never dive this deep and ruin our fun.

I've heard it's gone a bit downhill in the last couple years honestly. They switched to a static Pantheon, introduced a Cabal raid system and quite a few old players I used to hang out with left.

If you like exploration they have active builders all the time, it's an absolutely huge world with it's own text-based world map (check out their Google Maps version of the main realm: http://www.shatteredkingdoms.org/worldmap/)), tons of items and lore to be found, and some great combat tweaks from standard Diku-based MUDs.

To me though it'll always be the playerbase that made it. I was able to help found a Cabal, change the face of the map (literally) with some in-character roleplay with the Imms, and got to interact with some really talented roleplayers which led to lots of good times.

Might have to fire it up sometime to see if it's still any good.

Hey, a fellow Blowtorchfa--uh, user!

Carrion Fields is great to play on a phone, but it's the only really mobile-friendly MUD I've experienced. And better hope you don't get jumped!

I wasted so many hours of my life grindan on shitty little MUDs back in the early '90s. After they went down (the "gods" were always CS majors who abandoned their MUD after they graduated and got jobs) I never had the inclination to get back into online gaming again.

>> No.1088051

>>1088021
Most of the shitty MUDs died a peaceful, natural death by now - the ones that remain are the good ones, the P2P ones (Gemstone, Dragonrealms) and the P2W ones (anything by Iron Realms).

>> No.1088395

I rather liked Sindome when I played it. It's an open-ended cyberpunk RP.

http://www.sindome.org/

>> No.1088435

My favorites are gemstone 4 (played gemstone 3 on AOL circa 1993) and aeakenedworlds.net, which is a fork of another mud that's just as old.

Gemstone is a unique mud with its own ui where you can only hold 2 items (1 per hand), your right hand is for your weapon and left for your shield. You have a round time (a forced wait) between attacks based on your armor, armor skill, and for other complex actions. They offer lock picking to open treasure that monsters drop, and and experience pool that you have to go to town to absorb so it forces some social interaction. It's got a unique healing system where empaths absorb wounds and can only heal themselves. All in all, a bitchin mud that's still going strong (play.net)

Awakened worlds is a nice shadowrun 3e mud. It's not without its flaws, but I play for about a month a year still, under (slow) but constant development.
