What was your reaction when you saw a friendly/non-hostile NPC in a shooter for the first time? What game was it for you?

It wasn't a big deal. Some journos and youtubers blow it out of proportion like it was some revelation.

Virtuacop. That dude who ran across screen wailing 'heeeeelllelllup miiii' near the start in that pathetic whiny voice. Probably shot him.

I didn't consider the Duke Nukem 3D women as non-hostile NPCs... They always felt more like animated decorations to me t b h.

>> No.10820238

>>10820220
Yeah it's like the women are treated like objects

>> No.10820253

>>10820238
I get that you're joking but they really are basically animated objects in DN3D. When I said "friendly NPCs" I implied something that at least moves around like the innocents in Blood. Women in DN3D are about as much of an NPC as the toilets are, quite literally despite how ridiculous that sounds.

They can be interacted with. Your definition of NPC is just shit, it's like saying early Dragon Quest games have no NPCs because they don't move.

>They can be interacted with.
So can other many other objects in the game. Like pool balls and etc.
>Your definition of NPC is just shit, it's like saying early Dragon Quest games have no NPCs because they don't move.
We're talking about shooters, not JRPGs.

My first shooter was Goldeneye so I just assumed it was natural. I might have played Doom before that, but no NPCs also felt natural so I never questioned it. And it doesn't quite count, but the people in arcade games that would run in front of you screaming "DON'T SHOOT I'M INNOCENT!!" always made me laugh.

I grew up playing point and click adventure games
it felt like shooters were catching up, really, by having non-hostile characters and more interactivity with the environment

Probably something like: "Oh neat"

>>10820149
>What game was it for you?

I want to say Duke Nukem 3D, because the strippers were technically NPC's. But I think Goldeneye is another one that comes to mind. With Natalia and whatnot. I do own a GOTY copy of HL1 that I have had since 2000. I remember how mentally incapacitated the NPC's were, they had a hard time navigating everything. It was fun building a posse of NPC's and having them follow me around.

Yeah I mean we'd been encountering friendly npc's in non shooting games since the 80's There were non enemy NPC's in Duke 3d if you count the strippers, then again in goldeneye on n64 so it's not like half life was first to it either.

Game artists would buy those CD texture collections and use them in games, so you see a lot of assets shared across multiple titles intentionally or unintentionally. Then digital cameras went mainstream and they just started taking their own photos to rip textures from.

Chickens in Counter-Strike's cs-italy, just because how cartoonish it is. Not even a corpse is left behind, just a pool of blood and some feathers lol.
