its not at all what youd expect from a 2D sonic game, but it controls pretty well once you git gud at it imo.

the problem is that theres just not really anything else like it. maybe umihara kawase if were stretching things? in fact i think it might do that "grapple-based" kind of gameplay idea a little bit better. you have a lot more variety in your various moves and the controls are far snappier
i also really like how the randomness of the stage order means you never have to get stuck constantly playing the same earlier levels on subsequent replays
bonus stages are fun too

the only game i know of that gives me that same feeling is umihara kawase with its fishing rod mechanics.

idk where it got its modern rep of being this completely unplayable garbage. its not that, it plays just fine. the controls may be strange due to the games overall design being based around two characters, but theyre perfectly intuitive. you pull back and it acts like a rubberband, which does exactly what you would think it would do.

Anything with a Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtrack is guaranteed to sound good at the very least. This game doesn’t reset the music when you die, so you get to hear more of the music
