Miyamoto refutes the idea that the Virtual Boy was a failure.

Ah yes, the classic CDifag cope

>> No.10810343

Honestly this just comes across as a massive cope.

>> No.10810349

I mean he is kinda right. It was never intended to replace the GameBoy in the way the Color did. Also sounds like it was typical Nintendo gimmicky experimenting and something to release when the 64 was delayed.

>> No.10810354

Did you know they were planning a relaunch of the Virtual Boy at some point in 96? There's more canceled games than released ones for the console as a result.

>If you think of it as garbage, just a hunk of overpriced plastic, it'd be incredibly impressive if it sold even 50,000 units

Ah yes, I remember the similar "Third Pillar" nonsense they pulled with the DS as well. What utter bullshit.

He's trying to give it the game & watch approach except it's not a g&w.

Same for >>10810354 because I've not heard of this (plenty of cancelled games though, tragic really)

ill only say that this is the same videogame company that tried to sell you cardboard years back and the same one that also made the wii and the e-reader so it seems plausible. half of nintendos products are just gimmicks.

It was Nintendo's 32X.

It would have been interesting to see a model 2 VB redesigned like the Vectrex. Mini monitor, personal 32bit game player(or whatever VB tech was), 2D mode and an add on visor if you want the 3D effect. Maybe super gameboy code it to colorize all previous releases for 2D. Probably still would flop, but atleast they could use up the hardware.

I don't know why they need to be so defensive about it still. It was a spectacular failure but it was preceded and followed by spectacular successes and it was really their only turd until the WiiU. And it's easy enough to explain away, just say the technology wasn't quite ready and you were too ambitious. That's mostly true

>> No.10810881

>>10810337
Despite this they absolutely refused giving the license to a dev remake VB WL for the 3DS

>> No.10810889

I always thought something similar. It's like a really weird unfinished prototype that somehow got released.
All in all it's actually pretty cool IMO, the 3D effect is great, the controller is good, I never had any eye strains, the red vectrex-like graphics are cool, the problem is the ergonomics. Most people (who never played it) will meme about the eye thing, people who actually played it know the problem is neck pain.
Also, it has a small library but there's not really any really bad game in it, and some of them are actually very good games.

Releasing the Virtual Boy was a humiliation ritual imposed on Nintendo by their Yakuza handlers

It was such a non failure that Nintendo tried to completely hide the fact it exists and killed the creator of it along with not bringing a single Virtual Boy game to another Nintendo console with 3D features.

Reads like cope, but I get what he means. I'm happy the Virtual Boy exists and had fun with it. It's neat despite having only a handful of games.

You could just change them to any color you want to avoid the horrible red and black. That's the only reason why it hurts so much to play.

There's been references to the Virtual Boy in other Nintendo games every now and then.

Nintendo never "fails" officially.

Sadly i didn't save it I remember an interview when Miyamoto was pretending that having few games on the N64 was not only a good thing ("quantity over quality" and "it doesn't matter because most kids only get 2 games a year") but was intended, like it was part of their plan all along when it is well known everyone left because they were long fed up with their practices and finally there was a worthy competitor.

>> No.10811268

>>10811261
N64 still got a decent number of games though. More than the Master System, and decidedly more quality.
Look at it however you want, but N64 software sold really good.

What I find funny is that Virtual Boy only shows up if you set the game to Japanese, it's actually missing in that room if you have it set to English.
