We weren't even mad back then, the strategy guides used to be good right up until IX when they started selling guides that told you to go to websites

100%ing a game shouldn't require you to find out "secrets"

>> No.10808592

>>10808563
This was a time before achievements. People didn't play a game to "100%" it they just kinda played them. Strategy guides were for people who got anxiety about permanently missable items or whatever.

Secrets and shit were just for fun. Except for stuff like Contra or Twisted Metal 2 or GTA where kids would pass around the codes on notebook paper via work of mouth and memorization.

does this even matter, the ff9 brothers with the ring wasnt discovered until like 10 years later, maybe you never 100% a game because there might be a still to be discovered secret

FF8 is filled with stupid bullshit like this and I'm convinced that the game designers were more interesting in jerking off and amusing themselves than they were in making a great game that made sense to its players.

It was a Protect Ring, everyone can learn Half-MP Mag Elem Null and Long Range from it. By this point, you either already has one or you just don't care about the sidequest, so maybe there was a good reason that sidequest was forgotten altogether since the triggers were as shitty as Fort Condor but even less obvious. The reward was pretty shitty regardless of what you should do to complete it.

>> No.10808939

It certainly has but most people weren't so warped that they needed to get 100% on their first go. Most people were quite willing and in fact eager to play a game a second, third of even fourth time to maybe get all the stuff they missed.

>>10808939
Devs are after that extra playtime trying to induce the behavior, instead time pressure worked the other way and they got the behavior set you describe of 100%ing or even really paying attention to achievements on a first play. They wanted to engineering the power gaming buttbaby to be their buttbaby, too bad for them it's a powergamer and giving them everything they want is non-optimal....so they got power-gamed about it. Not sure if they're meeting the behavior halfway or just overestimated gamers.

The protect ring doesn't really worth the effort of doing the sidequest :
- Long Range is pretty expensive (16 AP).
- Mag Elem Null badly stacks with more useful capacities for Vivi (aside from Return Magic) and it's also fairly expensive (13 AP).
If you want to go in length for obtaining Half MP for all your mage characters, by any mean do it because that capacity is great but I'd argue that statwise the Protect Ring is not that great (halves all element damage, huge focus of phys./mag. evasion, some defense/Mdefense and +1 spirit by leveling-up for the minmaxing autists).

So no, the next time I'll play 9 - I might skip the entire brothers sidequest altogether since you can obtaining it while riding Choco, spending points in Chocobo Hot&Cold (it's about 8000 points or maybe a little more) and doing the Mognet sidequest. That shit was not necessary or it should have been a better reward to do this.

Because here the triggers for you:
>Start disc 4
>After the battle with Nova Dragon
>After you beat Marilith
>After you see the flashback of Alexander
>After you hear Zidane talking to himself
>After you see the flashback of Dagger getting on the boat
>After you hear about the giant eye in the sky
>After you beat Tiamat
>After you hear about the two planets
>After Quina thinks it is drowning
>After you hear the story about memories
>After you beat Kraken
>After you hear about Gaia's birth
>After you beat Lich
>After you hear about the story of the origin from nothingness
>After you enter the Crystal World
>After you beat Death Gaze

The final fantasy 7 strategy guide has a shit load of missing items and weapons, doesn't explain how the ultimate weapons power up and has an almost worthless beastiary.
Don't get me started on Final Fantasy 8's guide with their bullshit adamantoise entry.
