Now that the dust has settled, what was the best 3D platformer of the fifth console generation?

I want to say some of my favorites like Jumping Flash 1&2, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon or Floating Runner (not great but I have great nostalgia for it).
But realistically, and judging it purely as a 3D platformer, it's the one you already know, Super Mario 64

Picrel is actually pretty nice.
Also it's not a full game but Sonic World in Sonic Jam is impressive. A full 3D Sonic on Saturn was totally possible.

Rayman 2. Though you could argue whether it counts as a 5th gen game given that textures and sound had to be downsampled for the original N64 release and only the later PC and Dreamcast versions contain the original ones.

Crash 1.

At that time 2D platformers were pretty much perfected thanks to the efforts in the early 90s with the Genesis and SNES, while 3D was a new beast. I'd say this is the 3D platformer that feels closest to 2D, which many hold against it, but it works in its favor for me, as instead of doing a ton of experimentation, mainly in the camera department, and failing, it simply works...

Anon, the concept of a 3D styled platformer having corridor levels to more closely resemble 2D, instead of more open 3D areas like Super Mario 64, Banjo and Spyro isn't so hard to figure out, when making a 3D platformer you either go with one or the other and this was the easier way, especially in the early 90's. Crash was quite similiar, but it did the formula 10x better really.

N64. Nothing from the same generation beats Mario 64.

The best others had to offer was platformers with lots of hallways and enclosed areas.

Mario 64 was open and wide and free roaming
