I used to love the game but learning about the apprentice system kills the excitement on subsequent replays as I can no longer not bother about them. As are most minmax systems in any game, I suppose.

I played the game like 3 times and never bothered to figure the masters out and it was a breeze every time. Don't think there are any hidden super bosses or anything that really requires the minmax.

there were actually 2, both in the same area around the last portal. a wizard dude and a robot. they look like regular encounters because there is no boss music playing but they were meant as an endgame challenge, more difficult than what you can encounter anywhere else in the game.

>> No.10806706

>>10806696
I tried both of them, can't really call them bosses, more like "one shot or be one shotted" kind of gimmick enemies, they're a matter of figuring out the cheese rather than minmaxing your party.

I think, this game is the only game I have started playing well into three digits since '99, when my brother and I have gotten this game.
The farthest I have played it is when you break into the mansion at the very beginning.
I don't know why but once I reach that point I just lose all interest up until I play it again a few years later. It's a vicious cycle.
And the worst part of it all?
This game just looks so charming that I can't imagine it not being a good game and I want to like it. But just can't force myself to progress further.

3 came out during capcoms all time peak and it shows. played 3 first and it aged like fine wine. good pacing and formula changes frequently. then played 1 and was shocked in the contrast. then finding out 2 completely justifies the comparison. 1 was babbys first rpg. 1 and 2 play more like true sequels but 3 feels more final fantasy connection even though its still in universe if you look hard enough.

This is a really special game to me bc it's one of the only oldschool RPGs I sat down and beat start to finish with a friend. It was an older kid who lived in my mom's neighborhood, he taught me how to sell weed. We'd get absolutely blazed and play BoF3 for hours. Adored Pico, a literal onion knight. Some years later I was replaying the game in English and still got stuck so I had to consult gamefaqs again. Replayed it a third time in Japanese recently and got it right first time just following the guy's directions.

Someone explain the appeals of these games. I know you can "combine" multiple characters into one as a game mechanic, which sounds so horrifically silly and absurd that I can't see how it makes any sense.

>>10815282
That's not how the game, and especially the entire series, works at all.

It's a JRPG where the main character is a dragon and can turn into one. Admittedly the first two SNES games treated the transformations more like a summon/magic spell that you just cast, it happens, then you resume the normal fight.

Breath of Fire 3 had a system where you collect dragon genes, and you could combine up to three to create different transformations, which you actually stayed transformed into as long as you had enough MP. One of those genes allowed you to merge with another character but that was hardly the whole gimmick of the game, much less the entire series, it was possible to not even collect that gene.

4 was IMO a step back. You eventually get a small set of dragon "forms" you could turn into, and you do still stay transformed, but for all of them you just turn into the same physical looking form. You are stronger like that, but the "dragon" attacks are still treated more like spells/summons again.

BOF5 was considerably different, you just had one form, that's it. It was essentially invincible and OP as hell... but using it makes a counter go up, if it hits 100% it's game over. There is NO way to lower the counter and it remains the entire game, it's possible to basically make a save file unwinnable if you overuse it.

... BOF6 IMO does not count, it was a mobile-only Japanese-only gacha game. I have no idea how that one even worked.

But the series was never about combining characters, only 3 had that, and only as one of the many optional ways you can transform. The series is basically a JRPG where the main character is from an ancient race that can turn into dragons.

By combining characters I assumed he meant party members, the shamans are barely more than just equipment game-wise.

>> No.10815415

>>10815282
That's only in BoF2. You encounter various mystical shamans that can be fused with a character, boosting their stats or giving them a new, more powerful form.
The shamans aren't playable, so from a gameplay perspective they're like an accessory you can equip at specific places (that is removed when a character is KOed).

Breathe of Fire 3 is the first Teen JRPG I can think of where you can see pixelated full-frontal nudity in the game. I'm surprised that the game didn't get censorship for Deis. I remember getting a boner when I first saw her nude in that sphere. Also I liked the games story where you played as a kid from childhood to adulthood and the music is pretty good. I was stuck on the part where you on the desert on the PSP version and I gave up on it until I got the PS1 version so many years later and used a walkthrough and finished the game with all the dragon balls to make me transform. I liked where you start off as a thief instead of a hero at first with 2 different people instead you try to do good things but it just back fires and you have to find them. Getting the 4th one is so expensive online you're better off playing it on an emulator. I did beat the first 2 but man I was lucky trying to beat the 2nd one because I was down to my last potion and luckily I was able to beat the boss.
