Did you play Drakengard when it came out? Was it considered good back in the days?

Lets just get the typical things responses and replies out of the way and just go for the real meat of the series, the worldbuilding, music, characters and story.

But the thing is no one actually talks about how it was to play it back in 2004 and what the general consensus was. Did people think that it played like absolute dogshit back then or was it just an average PS2 game, just worse than 'the best of the best' titles?
>the music
Ironically most of the best tracks have never been released. You know the ones that play during the cutscenes, holy shit some of them are just amazing

What? What the fuck are you talking about? What filtered me? I literally beat the game to completion twice. I like the soundtrack, I'm just saying that out of all the tracks in this soundtrack (that I love) my favorites are the ones playing during the cutscenes

It's interesting. Like everyone shits on Zelda 2 now yet it was liked back in the days both in Japan and internationally

No, I remember seeing it gaming magazines thinking it looked really cool and gritty.

Reviews of it were heavily mixed and I don’t remember fans thinking much differently. It mostly became known for being a bad, long, repetitive game with a novel story and some wild endings you could get. The meta-analysis of it as being something more only happened after a couple of Nier games had been released.

Literally all Dynasty Warriors and musou clones were seen as shitty button mashers. Nobody cared about Drakengard until after that robot ass game came out and Yoko became an “auteur”

I didn't play it until 2005 or so. I liked it because of the batshit story. Fuck the final boss, though.

It was already a cult clasic far before that because of its characters, atmosphere and dark, crazy story.

Not when it came out but I played it before Nier. I didn't get past Ending D though. Looking online around the time it got mediocre to even good reviews, with IGN almost giving it an 8. I thought it was okay gameplay wise and liked the atmosphere a lot. Here's a couple of articles from that time period:
https://gamecritics.com/mike-bracken/drakengard-review/
https://www.ign.com/games/drakengard
https://www.rpgfan.com/review/drakengard/

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone saying it was an awful game like now because back then no one was playing it because of Nier or Taro and could just enjoy it for what it was. Nier kind of ruined discussion about the game with many playing it just for those reasons and magnifying the tedium of it, assuming they even played it and aren't parroting what others say.

Also small personal gripe. The people complaining about the localization toning down the incest and Leonard are always full of it. It's the same in JP. And in English if you didn't realize there was incest connotations with Furiae you would have to be retarded as every character tries to tell Caim about it. Leonard has nothing overt in the JP version either and the context for his pedophile thoughts are only in side novel which didn't get localized with the game. The religious naming localizations are the only thing that actually got messed with but I can understand why back then.

Caim and his merry band of murderhobos would do great in DnD :3 you have the priestess waifu, you have a knight, you have a dragon, a psychtic elf who eats babies.. Not mentioning Leos mess, oi. You also have a spoony bard who huffs his own ego.

This. The game wasn't hailed because of the its gameplay (that was universaly regarded as terrible, the "drag-on" sections as acceptable) but the storyline and characters were unprecedented. The game was beyond fucked and it became patently clear the director was off his rockers when you went down path D. Nothing like that in vydia before.

Seriously are there other examples of video games going off the rails like that? Drakengard 1 did feel strange and oppressive from the very first chapter but you get what I'm saying. The only games that come to mind are the first two Mother titles and MGS2. Also Majora's Mask to an extent
