Lots of the original pokemon ads used the DMG. I’d guess it’s to show people that the game can be played on that old gameboy you have lying around.

A lot of the ads in America did use the pocket though. And the color.
Hell, the gameboy color came out almost a year before Red/Blue in Europe. Even in the USA, the GBC released only a few months after Red/Blue (September and November 1998).

I’d imagine a lot of children getting Pokémon back in Christmas of 1998 would have gotten it alongside a gameboy color. I still have have my grape purple gbc + pokemon blue.

I never even owned a Gameboy. I got Red in 2000 and Gold/Crystal the year after, and played through all of them on the N64 via Pokemon Stadium's GB Tower. Wonder if I was the only kid who did that.

DMG is the codename used for the original Game Boy and its accessories (see text on the back of the unit). Nowadays some people use DMG as a shorthand to distinguish the original black and white brick from other Game Boy models like Pocket, Light, Color, etc.

I know that this is an unsolicited opinion, but I'll give it anyway. Personally, I still don't like these ads, even as nostalgia bait. I deliberately avoided such magazines when I was a kid because they are nothing more than product pushing. The one good thing about contemporary times is that I can block ads on my computer and avoid them on my television.
