Could this have been a big series to compete with Mega Man? The idea of body-parts being swapped out is interesting.

Nope. Kitamura was not a "series" kind of guy. He's even saying this on his new Twitter. He wants to make singular "new" experiences. MM2 only got made because Kitamura didn't think MM1 showed the full extent of the concept (along with the fact that it's, like 80% enemy ideas they wanted to put in 1, but couldn't).

I'd love to see him make Cocoron the way he really wanted with the comparatively unlimited freedom that modern game development gives, but he's not going to let it have more than maybe 1 or 2 sequels.

Those at Sur De Wave at least felt that it had potential for a series and the company didn't go down because of those games anyways, it was Nostalgia 1907 that doomed the company.

Maybe with some prodding, we could get a Sur De Wave collection? All their games, plus the unreleased titles? Who even owns the rights now?

I'm always shilling Cocoron whenever there's a discussion anywhere about obscure retro games worth playing. Easily one of my all time faves. I wish we could listen to the tracks in the Mega Man 2 ost before they were changed (all but Crash Man's) because I bet it sounded similar to Cocoron's ost.

The most amusing thing about 1st one, aside from character generator is how enemies behave. Those armadillos are fuckin' nuts with their movesets I think those are just different enemies used the same sprite but for a while, I thought devs made some advanced AI pattern just for them

Also, could this game been more popular, I bet chinese pirates would totally rename it into Digimon and sold poorly made hacks on unlicensed carts. The basic likeness is pretty much there.

It is unclear if they're enhanced ports or proper sequels. They seem to re-use a lot of designs and ideas but have a new branding.
