>sonic's newest game re-releases on nintendo a mere few months after sega discontinued console production

How did people react when this happened?

>> No.10791756

Most Sega fans I knew didn't hate Nintendo, and those who didn't like Nintendo just accepted it I guess, but I always got the impression those who went full hate for Nintendo didn't like video games for the ludo aspect, and more as a sort of personality trait, hence the whole Mature gaming thing of the 2000s onwards. Those who were like that and latched onto Sega before just said fuck it and continued playing Mature games on PC or PS2.
Actual video game fans were playing on all consoles if possible. And if they didn't own a GC at least they wanted a GBA (where Sonic Advanced was released, before SA2)
What linda shocked me was the Mega Collection. Having the classic Sonics on Nintendo Home console really was a sort of memorable moment nobody imagined before.

There are racing stages for Sonic/Shadow (+ Amy and Metal), battle stages for Tails and Eggman (+ Chao and Dark Chao), and emerald hunting stages for Knuckles and Rouge (+ Chaos and Tikal). There is also a kart racer mode based on the Route 101 stages but unfortunately it's not as good as say SEGA All-Stars Racing, but it's still something

I don't remember people caring that much. They were sad about Sega becoming a third party, not about their games going to one console or the other, although segafans seemed to be a little closer to xbox than the other brands.

That's the vast majority of people who buy video games today. 90% of modern "gamers" are only in it because video games are trendy right now. You'll notice they'll only play what everyone is talking about. You'll never see the average person play a 20 year old game for the first time out of curiosity

>> No.10792105

I remember how it all happened. Someone on the internet found out about Sonic being ported to the GameCube. Then it exploded. Sega went on damage control and tried to silence everyone. People were burning their copies of SA2 on the streets. The police was everywhere. It was on TV 24 hours a day. Yuji Naka was forced to testify before congress. He said he knew everything and still let the game be released. People were throwing Sonic plushies at him when he left the court. He resigned from Sega that very day. The next day yen collapsed.

According to Japanese fans, Sega has 3 enemies: Playstation, Bandai and Square.
I get PS (obilerated Sega in sales and market share) and Bandai (abandoned the original merge idea, eventually going with Namco), not sure why Square, maybe because they didn't release any games for Sega. Still the most hated company for Sega fans is Sony.
The company that sends the missile to the Sega HQ and kills Segara Sanshiro in his last commercial is supposed to be Sony.
I think something similar happens in Segagagaga?

to be fair, Segagaga also portrays the WESTERN BRANCH of Sega during the Genesis era as being a villain. So you know, if you liked Sega during that time period where they were on top of the world everywhere except Japan, you're now a villain.

From my POV, having grown up with Genesis and N64 for the most part and then getting a Gamecube, SA2B coming to Gamecube felt like the fucking shit. Then Gamecube and GBA both got a fuckton of Sonic content and it really just felt like a new dawn for Sonic and Sega. And then Heroes happened.

Can’t speak for everyone, but when I saw it was coming to GameCube in a magazine I was happy. All I remember was people playing it, don't think anyone really cared at that point. The hardcore sonic fans from the 4th gen console wars were probably already put off by Sega's antics and the lack of a real 5th gen Sonic game.

At that point, at least for me, it was more the ability to still play sonic games, it showed that sonic could continue without sega consoles. Ended up being for better or (mostly)worse but at the time it wasn't a bad thing with what led up to it.

the western branch was the villain during the mega drive era, and beyond. they were the ones obsessed with terrible peripherals and shit nobody bought, like the nomad, or the million different combine consoles. they completely drained the company, and then burned american retailers on the saturn, blocked 3 quarters of the consoles library from being localized (a thing stolar also did when he worked with sony until capcom threatened them with making their games saturn exclusives), and then blamed sega of japan for it all, because americans are self-centered and unable to take responsibility for their actions.

The 32X was the JP branch's idea, but I will agree that it should have been shot down since the American branch did go along with it.

>and then burned american retailers on the saturn
Forced by the JP branch, the reason retailers got burned was because it was a kneejerk last minute move that SoA was not at all planning on making. They were planning a big "Saturnday" launch months later for a reason, you don't just randomly go back on that without some idiot breathing down your neck.

>blocked 3 quarters of the consoles library from being localized
True. Stolar was hellbent on driving SoA into the ground, but that was after Kalinske quit.
