Ok fellows. I have a request, but first a little background. I love retro games, but i've always stuck to the fast paced, high action sort of genres....fighting, action side scrollers, etc etc. The world of RPGs never interested me because i felt like everytime i started one i got bored too quickly and just turned it off for Megaman or something...but now i'm on my laptop with no gamepad atm (i can't play action games with keys) the only one i ever really played alot was the Pokemon franchise...which i've been playing but it's getting old. So i'm asking....what are some good classic RPGs for the SNES or Genesis? And not just good, but also good for somebody who really doesn't have any experience with whatever series the game is in...something one new to the genre should be able to jump in and learn the ropes quickly and enjoy it without looking up a strategy guide or something, halp?

Start with Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

Seiken Densetsu 3. Best action RPG on the SNES.

Try Dragon Quest 3 on the SNES (get the fan translation). That one is pretty lightweight and easy to get into, while also having a bit of space for customizing, tactics and shit.

No, this game had an awful combat system and it hides important information like how the class changes work from the player.

Any idea where to find that? the site i usually use seems to only have a japanese version.

Looks interesting, I might give it a go.

your mom had an awful combat system and you absolutely do not need to understand how the class changes work as a first time player.

I assume that was supposed to be described in the game manual.

Why the hell would you even think of starting a series with the third game? You don't start reading Harry Potter with the Prisoner of Azkaban either.

i'm not sure what you mean. i don't play games for a story...if i wanted that i'd watch a movie. i play games for gameplay.

Just play the ones you already have, no? RPGs are generally long games, and are best played one at a time. Doing shit like alternating between 5 RPGs and such is generally a bad idea, you'll eventually lose interest in all of them.

But if you really want another series that's good for beginners while also not being completely babby-like, try Might & Magic. Start with either 4+5 (World of Xeen) or 6.

Final Fantasy Legend I and II. Those games have different races that develop differently and they are short games as well.

another dragon quest fan?
never thought I'd see that on 4chan.
I liked DW3 for GBC.
>>1078685
then, definitely play the rest of the series
1,2,3,5 and 9 are the better of this series. Sadly 9 is for ds only, and 5 is a remake for ds. I'm not sure if there is a translation patch though.

Phantasy Star 2 and 4 for genesis are my favorite RPGs. You've probably heard of the series, but if you haven't, it's a mix of classic JRPG and science fiction futurey adventure stuff. 2 is my personal favorite, but play 4 first, because 2 is harder to get into. You don't have to have played the previous games to enjoy 4. It makes some references to the other games, but don't worry. They're the kind of references that would only slightly enhance your understanding and enjoyment if you do get them, but you might not even realize they were made if you don't get the references, and the story will still make perfect sense on its own.

I actually like the old style writing in the NES Dragon Quest games. Felt it gave them a bit more personality then most other games back then. Plus it's much easier to read then Dragon Quest 4 on the DS.
