Retro sizer https://retrosizer.com/
Retro handhelds spreadsheet https://pastebin.com/ZyqXr19r
SoC Comparison https://versus.com/en/mobile-chipset

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Just avoid the RG Nano
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with lower prices, better specs, but weaker build qualities
TrimUI: Good build quality, shitty software with no good CFW alternatives

>How do I get games
Google: tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up on your computer, throw them away, and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Responding to previous thread, the reason I don’t use my TV for DS and 3DS games is because mapping two screens to one sucks, and playing any games with touch input on a TV sucks more. I do tend to pay GB/GBA games on handhelds as well, I find the low quality audio gets really abrasive on good speakers, it’s much more palatable on a handheld. I guess I just only use handhelds for games designed for that form factor in the first place. I do wish I had a more ideal GBA solution, the 3DS dpad position is not particularly comfortable and the screen borders are massive. I use my DSi XL for GB games but there’s no way to run GBA games on that thing without a ton of compromises.

It's fun, just a lot tougher than I was expecting. Gym leaders are no joke in Clover. Also lacks a lot of the QoL features I'm used to in other GBA hacks, I wonder if they plan to add them in 2.0 coming eventually. Also if you like Crystal Clear, I would highly recommend Pokemon ROWE which is a very similar concept but for Emerald. Has literally every QoL feature you can think of, I've been playing it on the side too when I need a break from Clover's challenge. It's a nice pick up and play kind of game since it has randomization options built right in.

Just got me Retroid 4 Pro and...I think this is endgame for me. Until we get a major jump I see no reason for me to ever get anything else. Mario Sunshine and Katamari's running perfectly at 2x resolution, I can run heavier shaders on my retroarch cores with no slowdown, the system's just thick and rounded off enough that you don't even need a grip to be able to play stick-heavy games (though the grip is certainly nice to have)

I'm sure there are other handhelds capable of more, but for this price and this size, I'm absolutely thrilled.

It's pretty gud for GBA & Wonderswan, I have a couple of PSP games but I'll wait until I'm done with my current plays to dive deeper. Been enjoying SNES on it too but I don't have an RGB30 to compare it with.
GBA & WS work out at 4.4 & 4.5" & 3.9 inches integer for GBA if you hate shaders/overlays, That's in the same luxurious space as the DSi XL.
The OS is mediocre though, 1.03 is "ok" but still shit, wifi is limited to only retroachievements/netplay, shortcuts are kinda shit and the start & select buttons being on the right side suck for retroarch hotkey shortcuts. Updates could fix it down the line but its CPU isn't a jelos/arkos dear RK3566 or anything so it's down to trimui only atm.

It's hard to trust reviews since so many of them are on early firmware which was shit or in RGC's vid he did the whole thing on power saving mode or it took their device too long to step up clocks. If you have any games I wouldn't mind downloading them and giving them a run to check.

So I decided to jump on the RG35XX H train simply for some GB and GBA games since it was on sale at a reasonable price and I'm wondering what CFW should I bother jumping to?
GarlicOS apparently just started being reasonably recommended recently based on what I'm searching.
ArcOS seemed like the safest bet and the way to go.
muOS seems like the most mature of the lot.
Batocera seems like muOS?

I'm not really sure what I should be looking at here. Also, when it comes to taking screenshots do I need to grab something on the Linux side or does their version of Retroarch allow it natively? Does it take screenshots in the native resolution or however it's gonna be scaled up for the screen? It's hard to find information on this at all, just people asking where their screenshots are.

Everything on the firmware/OS side is done by Trim atm, they're doing the heavy lifting, the bugfixing etc and they're even setting better clock speeds on their scripts too.

If you're looking for performance and another manufactuer offers a similar screen size and better performance that fits your needs and you can afford it then go for it.
I play a lot of handheld games, RPGs and simple stuff, not action so it does what I wanted it to.

Rayman 2 seemed fine and SA2 was <60 fps at default settings, frameskip or tweaking might help but idk. Not my jam. Here's some game journo tier play RM2 https://files.catbox.moe/rtrgr1.webm SA2 https://files.catbox.moe/i0zxa5.webm
It's an ok buy for 50 but you gotta know what you're going in for, it's a cheap device like an R36s or smth, if you're a powerzoomer that wants dreamcast N64 Saturn and it's not gonna run what you want then try and find something else rather than holding out hope that a firmware update will fix it down the line.

I have 3 1tb sd cards. Two sandisk and one silicon power or sp. I have 2 or 3 512 gb sd cards, like 3 or 4 128 sd cards. mostly sandisk, one or two samaung evo. Sandisk or samsung are for sure good. You can get 1tb for 70$ or less if you catch it on sale. You can get 1tb sp brand for like 50 or 60 on sale. (it gets a tiny bit hotter than a samsung, reads a little slower but honestly should be just fine. My SP holds my movie collection but works just fine with games.(always back up your shit on a hard drive or two regardless.)

So anyways:

For game collections up to PS1/N64: 128 sd card

For collections including the prior plus saturn/dreamcast, psp: 256gb-512gb

For collections including the prior plus ps2/GC and beyond: 1tb- 1.5tb. As far as I'm aware; 1.5 by samsung is the highest current storage threshold but won't hold all entire collections at this point as ps2 alone is 1tb plus I believe.

Do you guys use color correction for stuff like GBA and GBC? I know it's the more "authentic" way to play the game, but I really like the more vibrant visuals on stuff like GBC when playing the game raw. Sure, *some* devs designed their games around the duller colors back then, but not all of them; for example, Shantae's modern design uses the same vibrant colors as the unfiltered GBC Shantae, so "raw Shantae" just looks more right to me. It's how the game looks when played on those IPS/OLED screen mods anyways, and people jerk those things off to high heaven.

You don't use color correction because it's authentic, you use it because generally GBC and GBA colors look like ass raw. The implementation on emulators tend to be very outdated and I also recall reading there were some limitations to color bandwidth in RA from the core's side, so you'd be better off doing it through shaders.

The reason is they're a budget brand, and an OLED would probably add at least an extra $50 to the pricetag at least. There's a reason the RG556 has significantly worse build quality and slightly worse performance than the Pocket 4 despite being $30 more after all.

Also if you want a tip for doing bezels for a specific game, take a screenshot, measure pixel area in photosho- gimp lmao and then block off that centre area/put your LCD grid/other overlay on top.
For better accuracy so you avoid shit like >>10790323 subtract the display area from the canvas, then block it out with 2 chunks where the art is going to go to make sure it's pixel perfect and leave an area below it roughly the same colour juuuust in case your crop goes wrong.

Is it common to get slowdown from using bezels? I tried those Fire Emblem RGB30 bezels, and all of a sudden, my game got all choppy. It's weird because the FPS counter still read "60fps", but it FELT like 40 FPS. So then I tried other bezels, and some of them lagged (the default ones), while others didn't (the ones made by TechDweeb). So then I tried switching from the lcdgrid shader to the dot shader, and NOW, I can use the bezels lag-free. It's a little brighter than I'm used to, but I can deal with it. It's just weird, because
>custom bezel = no lag
>custom bezel + lcdgrid shader = lag
>TechDweeb bezel + lcdgrid shader = no lag
>custom bezel + near-identical-looking shader = no lag
??? Is it because of too much detail? Like the Fire Emblem bezel had too many colors so it lagged, while the Techdweeb bezel was just a black plastic texture, so it didn't lag?

I don't have issues with them usually, you sure about 40 fps and not 30? 40 is halfway between 30 and 60 for latency and is even easier for your brain to get used to.
If it's one layer with a PNG/image in the same format/dimensions it should be the same amount of work to draw it, that's why people sometimes generate their own grids and use them as overlays over shaders, because it's doing less work.
Could be an issue with the soc not boosting appropriately? idk how good Jelos or arkos is on that device or how to check the frequency in game.

Moderation almost purely comes down to whether people are on topic or not. If you're arguing about handhelds, retro games, or related industries (like Brother Zou) it's fine. It's when a fucking idiot comes in here spamming /v/, /b/ and /pol/ shit for no reason that it becomes an issue.

I wanna get one, but not for $100 and not through Aliexpress, which I am currently dealing with my last two packages (One from November, one from January) being shipped with washed shipping labels so Canada Post refuses to deliver them. The fuckers attempted to wash my shipping label fucking twice for the same item, which I should have had back in December at the latest.

You don't have to worry about washed shipping labels from official Aliexpress pages, like Powkiddy's, Data Frog's, and Miyoo's, but it seems to be a growing trend over the past six months where tons of Aliexpress sellers have started re-using shipping label barcodes to skip paying for the shipping fees, but then the package is discarded/returned during transit/once it reaches your country and customs realizes the package was never paid for.

I even argued with the Canada Post that I don't care what the shipping costs are, I'll pay them myself to get my package, they said "lol no goodbye".

I liked the simplicity of it, but for such a combat heavy game it had pretty rough combat. Enemy hitboxes felt weird so you're forced to rely on auto aim, but auto aim is jank, so you end up missing most of your shots, and the first person aiming is sluggish, so it's terrible when the game expects you to use it. Like in the last level you need to aim up to hit all the elite troops, but you have a shorter range than them (even though the graphic of you shot passes right through them), and if the auto aim reticule isn't up when you fire it passes through them even on what looks like a direct hit.

Yeah, but even then the screen they use is probably gonna be a 4.7", negating all the compact benefits of a clamshell. And at this point it's becoming an obvious progression to reach for higher power and size. Like the Odin 2 "Flip", for me at least. It's not all good news I'm hearing from the RP4. Maybe I'm just after a cheaper GPD Win mini/Max2 with Steam's support system and quality. If I'm waiting another 5 or so years for that, I would perhaps grab an Odin 2 or equivalent clamshell to tide me over. It's tempting to buy smaller 'cos of the waiting though.

Going on a road trip this summer. What's the best one I can get for less than $200 and allows for Bluetooth controller connections? Preferable 2 controllers to share. Gamecube comparability would be a bonus. Form factor doesn't matter much, will probably buy a case for it anyway.

Still really wish the controls were better on the RG556, also my R trigger is starting to squeak/grind a lot now and feels like it could break any moment, but my god the screen is just unbelievable. Why yes, I do it whenever I have the opportunity but since many of those aren't really meant to play on that aspect ratio there is always some compromises that have to be made, such a misaligned text or graphical glitches here and there
On some games those compromises are pretty minor and passable, such as this one, CTR on the PSX

4:3 content is not going to be that much bigger than the 2S. The advantage is on wider aspect ratios like GBA, PSP, and game streaming. If those are important to you, it's worth it. But if you're hoping that text is substantially bigger, you're probably going to be disappointed.

I wrote a nice chonky post about screen sizes, text & ARs but my browser died last minute. I'm not gonna make this coherent.
Anyway 3.5 > 3.8" is a significant enough upgrade since it's still on the lower end of the scale but I wouldn't see it as an endgame target.

My eyesight is getting worse as I age too and eye fatigue in both directions is cancer. A 5"16:9 screen's a nice sweetspot for PSX and earlier since it works out at an equivalent of 4.1" which is close to a DSi XL or there abouts but for text size on consoles beyond that sub is pretty shit for PS2 or beyond, for those systems you want to look at 6" 16:9 or 5" for 4:3 equivalent.
This also goes both ways because while beeg screens are nice for consoles they start to suck as you get progressively larger for handhelds, GBA on a 6" 16:9 display is equivalent to 5.3" and 6.2" on a 7" display, the first being within the limits of being sensible at under 2x size and the second engorged. A deck with it's 16:10 AR is a sickening 6.7".
So when you get into display autism you gotta be careful to not focus too hard on numbers in one direction and remember the limitations each generation/platform had and how it relates to the display size you're using. Why does this only really happen on hanhelds? It doesn't, AOV matters for other displays like monitors & TVs too but those sit less on the extremes and usually have more variables when at most you'll only ever have arms length for granularity with a handheld.

Schizo out.

Do I need a Nintendo Online membership in order to be able to download these games, because I fon't feel like getting one. Is there any way to check the size of these downloadable games and what would be a decently sized sd-card for this purpose? Much obliged.

So I need to get a cartridge and put the game on there myself and pay for it? What a time to be alive. That's why I'm asking about the online membership, which isn't free. I just want to play the games, without jumping through hoops.

My Miyoo Mini Plus arrived recently. Aside from some audio stuttering on certain arcade titles on the MAME2k3 core it does its job well emulating the stuff I'm interested in, even x68k stuff. Fighting games and beat em' ups are rather painful but racing games and non-manic shmups are generally fine.
I have PTSD from lackluster sticks so I'd rather a decent d-pad than below average sticks, luckily the d-pad did not dissappoint.
The side-keys are... manageable with a grip.

Overall it's not the 10/10 that redditors claim it is but also not something that would give me buyer's remorse like I've seen people here mention. Still though, I'll keep it in mind to set my eye on a horizontal handheld when/if it breaks down eventually.

Here's the thing running Mahou No Shooter Puti'n Plin for the x68k.

meanwhile gba harvest moon runs even at 133mhz on it... so there is that

Actually now that I think of it, I doubt even a good enough stick or placing the shoulder buttons on a better place would've made much of a difference here since the issue is fundamentally size oriented.

Don't forget that the dock uses USB-C, meaning the only reason you're forced to use the analogue dock is because they went out of their way to encode the video output so that only analogue docks could decode it.

Not even Nintendo and Apple products would go that far

>> No.10798791

>>10798707
wiimotes kinda suck tho...

>> No.10798827

>>10798726
yeah but you don't really aim with the wiimote, you're still aiming by looking at a reticle in the screen, which doesn't really correlate with where the barrel of your wiimote is pointed. the point of light guns is that it aims like a gun, and you can't really do that with a wiimote.

the mouse comparison was a bit extreme, I think it's more accurate to say using a wiimote like a light gun would be like binging dpad directions to an analog stick and saying it feels like analog control
