10780513 No.10780513 [Reply] [Original]

I don't really do 8-bit RPGs, but just finished Mother 1 and really liked it, wanting to try some others. Only thing is I'm not into super traditional fantasy.

Are there any other good 8-bit RPGs with unique settings, concepts, presentation, etc?

Did you beat it with the Easy Ring?
If so, Mother 3.

If not, jump to DQV or Glory of Heracles II though IV

I've already done Earthbound and M3, and I didn't use the Easy Ring. Played the original prototype rom, no guides. That said, M3 and DQV aren't really 8-bit RPGs. May look into Heracles though

Shadow Brain, really simple and relatively easy dungeon crawler in which you don't need to map out dungeons manually for most of the game but a lot of fun and an interesting world, perfect for getting started on first person RPGs

Actually been meaning to get into those games for a while. Any reason you suggest skipping 1? Also I know SNES remakes exist, are they just the NES games with new visuals ala Mario All-Stars or are there noteworthy changes?

and if you like Sweet Home, Namco's Dream Master is a lot like it. IIRC it doesn't work in every emulator though.

>>10780551
I played 2 before 1 myself, 2 is more userfriendly and 1 has more grinding, but it's up to you. I haven't played the SNES remakes but they add automapping so you don't need to manually map out most things, but everyone says they are worse in every other ways.

>> No.10780559

>>10780557
Which ones from these require manual mapping out of curiosity? I ask because I mainly play these kinds of games through a handheld and often like playing on the go, so needing a pen and paper doesn't work out super well for me

>> No.10780562

>>10780559
ITT, only Megami Tensei 1 and 2. Shadow Brain has in game maps for which area you can acquire in the game.
Most first person RPGs will require manual mapping unless otherwise specified

>> No.10780568

>>10780559
mt2 has no automap but I don't remember the dungeon layouts being that difficult. you also get a mapping spell that allows you to see the area around you temporarily. if you have a good sense of direction, you can probably live without mapping.
