1994 was the year where games started to massively decline in quality across the board. From a gameplay perspective, all of the acclaimed classics seen here suffer immensely compared to titles released not even a year prior. As a few examples:

>Doom II felt massively underwhelming, like a glorified expansion pack to The Ultimate Doom
>Tekken was a poor man's Virtua Fighter with none of the depth or intircacy
>Sonic 3&K's level design is a complete fucking joke compared to 1, 2 & even CD
>DKC is only fun if you plan on speedrunning it, otherwise it's a miserable experience
>Mega Man X2 tries and fails to strike lightning twice, the series basically died here
>Earthbound is a borderline shameless clone of Dragon Quest with braindead mechanics
>Super Metroid's controls alone make it a chore to play, map design sucks too
>System Shock 1 is only beloved by hipsters, and even they admit it has terrible gameplay
>Streets of Rage 3 is a disgraceful downgrade even when ignoring the abysmal localization job
>Elder Scrolls Arena comes out and irreparably rapes PC gaming until the end of time

I could go on! Final Fantasy VI is a middle finger to fans of the previous games, Policenauts is somehow even worse than Snatcher. Killer Instinct is laughably atrocious. Not to mention all of the actual shovelware from this year like Shaq Fu, Primal Rage, Lion King and Pac-Man 2.

The few good games from 1994 are unfortunately never talked about: Umihara Kawase, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Sparkster and Hagane have all been basically forgotten. Maybe it's for the best.

They had never even really reached peak quality. Let's be real, the PS2 is when gaming really started to become great, and the explosion in popularity and sales reflect that.

1994 was a decline of quality, but not for the stupid and highly questionnable reasons OP listed.

The only reason is because it's the year the NES and Famicom lost support.

default does suck. shoot y, jump b, dash x or a makes it feel normal.
> map design sucks too
it's arguably one of the best 2d worlds ever created. do you even like video games?

all i do is switch wpn select to Y and wpn cancel to select

but i got a pretty long thumb. i keep the ball of my thumb on B to run, pretty much always, shoot is on X with the tip, then i can roll my thumb left/right for wpn select and jump, respectively
works for me

>Doom II felt massively underwhelming, like a glorified expansion pack to The Ultimate Doom
Ultimate Doom came out after Doom 2 and included Thy Flesh Consumed. I know what you mean and while I agree that Doom 1 is generally the better game, Doom 2 is still top tier.
>DKC is only fun if you plan on speedrunning it, otherwise it's a miserable experience
How so? Besides speedrunning does not make a game more fun, in fact in my experience speedrunning makes me get sick of a game faster because instead of focusing on actually enjoying the game all I am doing is retarting over and over just to get one trick down. Speedrunning feels like a job that you don't even get paid for assuming you don't stream.
>Earthbound is a borderline shameless clone of Dragon Quest with braindead mechanics
By this logic Dragon Quest is a shameless clone of Ultima.
>Super Metroid's controls alone make it a chore to play, map design sucks too
Compare this game to Metroid 1 and 2. It's way more forgiving and fluid. This just sounds like you got filtered by the difficulty.

The sad part is that Super Metroid isn't even difficult. It's arguably the easiest game in the entire series. Sure, having to hold down the run button for most of the game sucks, but you can remap all the controls and surely find something that works for you.

Technically, games started to decline when the ability to save was introduced. Prior to that, games were designed as arcade titles. Fast paced and challenging. After saves were introduced, you saw games gradually cast aside the arcade traditions for slower and more bloated experiences. The 2D era began to decline around 1994, and through that lens you are absolutely correct. It seems as though the limits of 2D gameplay had been reached by that point. People experienced platformers, shooters, fighting games and RPGs. Gaming needed 3D to survive past the 16 bit era, without it I think the sales of games would have continued to decline. Imagine a world where Halo was a 2D run n'gun. You'd probably be hard pressed to tell such a game apart from Contra, or Metal Slug, or Gunstar Heroes.

>Doom II felt massively underwhelming, like a glorified expansion pack to The Ultimate Doom
Please explain how this is a bad thing though?
>Tekken was a poor man's Virtua Fighter with none of the depth or intircacy
You need to unironically take LTG's advice if you think VF is better than Tekken in any capacity
>Sonic 3&K's level design is a complete fucking joke compared to 1, 2 & even CD
Is that why you put it on the list three fucking times to pad it out?
>DKC is only fun if you plan on speedrunning it, otherwise it's a miserable experience
Yeah an experience so miserable that it nailed Sonic to a cross and singlehandedly started Sega's downfall before laying the framework for a sequel on par with Terminator 2 but go off
>Mega Man X2 tries and fails to strike lightning twice, the series basically died here
Yeah the series definitely died at X2, please ignore the six more mainline Mega Man X games and the JRPG
>Earthbound is a borderline shameless clone of Dragon Quest with braindead mechanics

>Super Metroid's controls alone make it a chore to play, map design sucks too
Ask me how I know you're brain dead
>System Shock 1 is only beloved by hipsters, and even they admit it has terrible gameplay
You've never actually played SS1 or met anyone who has. If anything, you've met the playtesters who thought Bioshock was too hard and had to be dumbed down and gutted for release
>Streets of Rage 3 is a disgraceful downgrade even when ignoring the abysmal localization job
Ask me how I know you're braindead
