10775925 No.10775925 [Reply] [Original]

After a lifetime of ignoring arcades because of how complicated emulation is I recently gave it a chance. I realized everything I knew about retro games is a lie.
>Best looking pixel art games
>The games I thought were original are actually inferior ports.
>Overall Better controls thanks to joysticks
I guess you never talk about them because you don't know how to emulate mame. Disgusting.

I recently wanted to play a few things (stripjong shovelware) and I barely ever use MAME so I forgot how to, but all I had to do was change my folder paths as I already had a fullset. Then it just worked. I needed to remember a few hotkeys aside from TAB for menu and you can just easily find them in the input section.

I get the other issues people might have, but it's not really that hard to get running.

The NES ports are objectively superior games. The aesthetics (both graphics and sound) are better despite the limitations, the aspect ratio is better, amd the gameplay feels smoother. Contra is a rare example of the home port being better.

>>10776209
you're probably right, but since this board is /v/ lite, OP may as well have had to do it in order to get anyone to give a fuck about this thread

Anyway, if this is arcade thread then say what you're playing recently. Months ago I was posting on here about how Gain Ground is fucking impossible to 1cc solo on hardest, and having had no time to play it lately, I still believe it's true. World 2 has some real bullshit levels. I don't think they ever designed this game to be winnable on a single credit at max difficulty. In fact I never even see playthroughs of the game on hardest online. It might just be impossible (or maybe nobody wants to constantly restart with just the first 3 warriors).

homeboys. MAME never plays nice with my controllers--what gives? Sometimes it acts normal but if I switch to another game it'll get confused and it won't do anything, even if the controller is still paired to my PC. What do I do? Do I need to make MAME search for the same hardware ID every time?

Arcades were more powerful hardware and often had the A team making games for them; but "miles ahead" depends on when you are talking, and specific games. The one you posted has a release to a contemporary console that is very good, though of course held back by the downsides of the CD medium.

Make sure when you're editing your controls you're doing it for global and not just the one game.

No, considering that A-N is the standard for tiles you've got that covered. Sure it's not ideal in comparison to a real machine, but if you can touchtype it isn't much harder than mapping it to 1 row of keys.
I either relearn or remap calls, it's just 5 keys in most cases and it's not like I play it enough to warrant something special for it.

it's a great game, it's just fucking hard on highest difficulty (I guess that's what it should be but still...). I can't find anyone proving a 1cc is possible. You basically can't fuck up at all on later levels because then you have to save all 20 people and there just isn't time given how slowly most of the roster moves. So then you time over and your shit is done.

Maybe it's because I've been scumming a lot for practice, and I haven't really gone far in world 2 without losing my dudes; Do replacement warriors show up in later levels after you have all 20? Or are you fucked if you lose certain unique utility characters (ie. the two boomerang chicks). Does anybody know? Where do I gotta go to find a gain ground wizard?

Bro, you don't need to update when new versions come out. Just keep using what you've got. I only ever update my mame+roms every 2-3 years unless there is something specific that is new that I want, but any more thats rare. Just don't worry about it.

Pretty much entire arguments regarding "arcade ports" are garbage. They were made by B teams.
Unless they provide something better, extra or you prefer something in that systems limitations they are obsolete.
There are cases like Sega where the added new content for console is shit. So even new content doesn't always mean better.

>>10776192
Different games like Contra NES or Double Dragon NES are just that. Different games. No need to talk about them as if they are some kind port.

Had to look it up, but found the copy pasta some anon put together.
Get you a stable remap going!
"What's the matter, boy? MAME forgot your buttons again? That sucks!" -"Tired of having to reconfigure your inputs all the time? You're about to lose it and ready to give up? Wait! There's yet hope."

Introducing:
By default MAME instantly resets any button configuration that is being loaded or currently in use if the specified controller is not connected or drops connection while the program is still being executed. Scenarios like this include a wireless controller going into sleep mode, a weak battery giving out during gameplay or a cable pulled too early. But there's a solution: Write your own remap file using a stable controller ID and MAME's devicemap feature today - MAME won't forget your buttons ever again!

How to:
1. Connect your controller of choice.
2. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Human Interface Devices > HID Conform Game Controller > Your Controller > Properties > Details > pick Hardware IDs from the drop down menu and note it down.
3. Write a text document like pic related to permanently map your buttons to player 1 using your controller's hardware ID*** (see 2nd post). Save as a cfg-file and name it a single word without any spaces or special characters.
4. Put the new cfg-file into a directory called 'ctrlr' inside your MAME program directory. Create it if it doesn't exist already.
5. Open mame.ini > Under section '# CORE SEARCH PATH OPTIONS' set 'ctrlrpath' to 'ctrlr'. Under section '# CORE INPUT OPTIONS' set 'ctrlr' to the name of your remap cfg-file. Leave out the file extension.
6. Delete 'default.cfg' in the 'cfg' directory of your MAME installation. Your remap is the new default now! This step might not be 100% necessary but it autogenerates a new one anyway if needed.
7. Done

>> No.10780070

>>10780067
Result:
MAME won't ever forget your buttons again. Doesn't matter if your controller loses connection, goes into sleep mode, the battery dies or you pull the cable too early. It's Plug-and-Play now and will be recognized 100% reliably by its hardware ID.

Advice:
If you are using an 8-button arcade stick the layout illustrated below is highly recommended as it is the most suited default across all machines, offering you the NeoGeo 4-button top row and 6-button layout a la Street Fighter at the same time.

1234
4567

Note that none of this prevents you from making further adjustments to input settings on a per game basis from inside the MAME GUI if necessary. MAME creates a config file for every game you boot inside the cfg directory and those have precedence over the default which we have redefined here.

Documentation
https://docs.mamedev.org/advanced/devicemap.html

***DISCLAIMER (see 1st post)
Controller button names and enumeration as well as hardware ID will vary. Figuring them out is up to the user. It is recommended to create a game specific remap including all physical buttons first and using that as reference. It will be located in the cfg directory.
