zoomer here idk much about crt’s but they always seemed kinda cool for more retro stuff and today my neighbor had this KV-13TR10 out on the street for free so i figured i’d check it out, gonna wait a day or two for the condensation to dry before i try turning it on just incase, but if it works is it worth keeping? it only has 1 input that looks like a coax and says “VHF/UHF”

That's RF, pretty much the worst analog signal type. Both image and audio get transmitted through a single wire. But I bet you're a retard and didn't realize that it has a flap on the front where composite RCA connectors should be located.

You'd have to hook up an RF connection with a modulator which is the worst form of a/v input, but it'll work.

I have this tv, and I can't access its service menu, since the remote has a lot of unresponsive buttons. I've opened it up, cleaned its contacts, still won't work.
The tv is a Sony WEGA KV-21CE10K, the remote says RM-W100.
Is my only hope to find an exact replacement for this remote? Could there be a universal remote that works with this series of tvs? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Run composite from the console to a VCR and then the VCR to the TV via RF. Run the audio cables to an external amp. This keeps the audio signal separate from the video and allows you to have composite quality video via RF.

That's right. GT3 does this with iLink, so it will only work on FAT consoles that have this port. GT4 uses LAN, so it needs that each console have their own network adapter. Much easier when you've got three SLIMs.
And guess what, GT5 does it with FIVE screens:

I'm saying it wouldn't be much different from hooking your PC to a CRT monitor and emulating. If your question is just "Does GBS-C work with VGA monitors" then yes. Keep in mind it only accepts RGBS and component, no composite or s-video.

Oh nah I don't want to emulate. I know it will work as well, just not sure how well and how it would compare to a CRT TV, considering you're using the scaler in the middle instead of just directly connecting to the TV. I'm reading conflicting opinions by googling. I just realized the GBS-C wont be able to do scanlines outside of 240p content though, and if that's true then I guess I need a TV.

Put my PS2+CRT running a game
And then the same game running in PCSX2 on a monitor next to it

The amount of light emitted by the CRT / its vibrancy is simply two-fold that of the LCD monitor. There's no shader that can change that

Most of those are bottom of the barrel, not really worth getting into unless you specifically want to look at shit. Early LCDs were pretty bad overall.
And if you even manage to snag a better model, it will probably be worn out. This tech is much less durable than CRTs. Failing backlight, degrading pixels, you name it.
For example, I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 173P Plus, which is a refresh of a 2001 model. It's from around 2003 I think, it was my uncle's daily driver for a long time. It's got a PVA panel, the colors are great, with good blacks, and it's pleasantly dim, really nice for nighttime. But the upper half of the screen has a visible darker area because of the backlight going bad and there's pretty nasty image retention that can last more than an hour if you leave something on it for a long time. Also there's no buttons to change the settings, you need some ancient Windows XP program for that. Good enough for a secondary monitor, I guess, but wouldn't use it as my main one.

Ok it's been done. I threw the couch away. Moment of silence for lil bro the couch. Now I gotta find a TV stand and a CRT TV to put on it. I'm trying to find a steel rack or some sturdy shit but it's a struggle.

Found a Playstation Classic under the couch too.

I have a 31 inch CRT TV in pretty good condition, highest quality video connector it has is S-Video. Which isn't bad, but I also have a mint condition 17-inch CRT monitor with barely any hours on it as well. With the exception of my NES, every retro console I have can output RGB with just a cable. So I got the idea to upgrade my consoles to RGB and run them through the monitor instead.
I know full well that NTSC RGB isn't the exact same as VGA RGB. Roughly 15hz 320x224 signal getting pumped to a monitor expecting roughly 31hz-75hz 640x480-1280x1024. Also I know different consoles have different sync outputs, with some doing sync on composite, some doing sync on green, and so on. What I have found online is a schematic for a S-Video to VGA sync converter, that takes the Chroma and Luma and creates all needed signals from that. The issue with this is I'm converting from S-Video signal, so it's already subpar compared to RGB pulled directly from the consoles.
Is this a simple matter and I'm just over thinking it, or should I just get the VGA cable for the Dreamcast and be happy I have a use for the monitor besides emulating old PC games?

My TV only has a single SCART socket at the back and a composite video RCA connector at the front. It can only output mono sound, even to external speakers. I used to run my Dreamcast with a SCART RGB cable and my PS2 with a composite video cable. Today I upgraded my setup with this and purchased a SCART RGB cable for PS2 as well. Both consoles are connected to those two SCART sockets on the adapter and the adapter is connected to the single socket at the back of my TV. I also connected external speakers to the two red and white RCA connectors on the adapter so I can bypass my TV and get stereo sound with both consoles. I had some problems getting all of this to work together though. For some reason when PS2 was not on but plugged into mains, it caused weird problems with Dreamcast's sound output. Unplugging the PS2 from mains completely fixed that, so I just used a separate cord extender with a built-in switch for it. But what I found even more weird is that even with the PS2 completely disconnected, the LEDs on my PS2 Blueretro dongle would light up as if a part of my PS2 got backcharged in some weird way from the SCART socket in the adapter when I turned on my Dreamcast. The picture from the Dreamcast also got distorted when that happened. I put a few layers of electric tape on the pin 8 of PS2 SCART RGB cable connector and this seems to have MOSTLY fixed the problem. The LEDs on the dongle still light up, but only for a few seconds, then it stops and the picture from Dreamcast is completely normal as well. My question is as follows: is this safe? Do I risk damaging my TV or consoles if I run it like this for an extended period of time? I don't mind damaging my PS2 or TV given that I can get replacements for cheap, but my Dreamcast cost more from 100 EUR so it would be a waste if something happened to it.

Also the jump in quality between composite video and RGB on PS2 is HUGE. I won't be able to go back to composite now.

It doesn't, PC monitors usually don't. I think there were some very old models which did but the one you have there has to be pretty "recent" if it goes up to 1920x1440 so it will not support anything below 640x480.

>>10783575
The voltage on the tube is like 10000-20000V, so extremely high. The tube itself acts as a capacitor and can retain the charge even when the screen is powered off. Now I don't think there's enough power stored in it despite the high voltage to fry you, but if you fuck up it will give you a very nasty shock and maybe if you're unlucky it fucks with your heart or something and does kill you. This dangerous voltage however is only really accessible under the anode cap on the tube, so it's not very easy to shock yourself but if you're going to be working on a CRT you should safely discharge it first.

Also if you intend to work on it while it's operating, then there will likely be several voltage levels inside which will also have enough power to kill you, so be very careful if you're doing something like tuning / adjusting the image while it's turned on.

>> No.10784715

>>10784683
Resolutions in that range were common on PC but that was before the VGA days (CGA, EGA or whatever, I don't remember). Quake came along much too late for that so it's hard to say what it was doing, you can still run low resolution at high refresh rate (you can run 240p 120Hz on pretty much any VGA monitor) if said refresh rate isn't too high, but Quake might also have just been running at higher res while basically doing integer scaling from 320x240 to 640x480. Monitors which could do both 15kHz and 31kHz+ did / do exist but they were never common as far as I know so I doubt any program would require one as late as the mid-90s when Quake came out since most people wouldn't have such a screen.

So from what I've read there are two options to get a 240p output onto a 480p display is 1. double the lines, 2. double the vertical refresh rate. The problems with 1. is that without filter it looks too sharp because higher TVL means the gaussian blur is applied over a shorter absolute distance. On the other hand applying a scanline filter effectively halves the image brightness and also scanlines now look extra thick.

Doubling the vertical refresh rate causes poor motion due to frame doubling (why? Intuitively on LCDs higher is better). This can be corrected with BFI. Now that a blank is inserted every other frame effective brightness halves too but at least you have true 240p. Is my understanding correct? I probably should just read up on how the electron gun actually works but it took me a while to get this far, this 'old tech' is new to me.

If a VGA monitor is all you've got I'd say fuck it and just line double. Maybe add soft scanlines instead of hard ones. You'll still be getting the benefits of a CRT: clear motion, no lag, brightness and colors (unless you destroy the colors with a shitty HDMI to VGA converter)

It looks the same as long as the refresh rate is framerate multiplied by an integer. The key here is to have identical frame times, when they vary, we perceive that as stutter. That's why stable 30fps@60Hz is better than variable framerate hovering around 40fps, for example (unless you have VRR, though it tends to work best at higher framerates).
In reality, 120Hz (and its multiples) is the best universal refresh rate because it's an integer scale multiple of 24, 30 and 60, the most used framerates in video and game content (not counting PAL, you'd need 600Hz to also scale those frequencies right).

Yesterday I spent hours trying to learn and tweak that shit. used a PS2 240p test suite iso (not emulating MD). This is the best I could do. Setting vertical linearity and "s correction" was the most difficult. I also can't seem to get the width and height correct I believe. As far as I understood these should be actual squares, but to get them square I kind of need to squish down the vertical size and it goes under the borders, which bothers me. Other than that I'm not sure why it's kind of fuzzy around the red area. Text in games is also kinda fuzzy too, but I believe that's just because I'm using composite cables?

Bro, that's nearly perfect. You probably won't get anything better than this, especially on a flat screen. So congratulations on getting a really good set.
As for overscan, it can be a bit tricky to get it right based on the grid alone. My personal benchmark for it is FF7 menus, I always adjust it so that they fill the screen and don't get cut off even a bit. Preferably on an NTSC version.
The fuzziness comes from composhit, don't worry about it. Everything should look good with RGB.

I can't tell if it's bad settings or if the TV forgot a setting overnight. Maybe it's because 240p and 480i I don't know. Rotating it might have had an effect on geometry, it responds to the Earth's magnetic field after all. You could check the service menu again to see if you can make it better again. I doubt the TV forgot any of your settings, but you could try exiting the menu by pressing the TV (empty white box) or MENU button once more before going into standby just to make sure.
Blooming will affect it, too. The grid has uniform picture level, so it's all straight, but in reality when you've got a brighter object on the screen (like a full white UI element, or even a skybox), it will inflate and fuck up the geometry a bit locally.
480i/240p shouldn't matter in this case. However, switching between PAL and NTSC might give you some discrepancies, especially in picture size and position.

I saw a cute little CRT on the facebook marketplace, 14 inches but with S-video and component inputs, granted it only supports 240p/480i. I just wanted to ask, would S-video/component be that much of a visual improvement on a display that small? Figured it'd be nice to have around to play some PS2/OG Xbox on at least.

Looking at this Sanyo HT32744 on FB Marketplace. Apparently it's got HDMI but is still obviously 4:3. Do these TVs work the same as the 16:9 HD CRTs and run all the inputs through a digital to analog converter or are the analog inputs spared from this treatment? Or how would I even find out? Thanks.

There's something I find particularly gorgeous about old, shitty, RF CRTs. It's hard to explain exactly how I feel about them.
I'm sure that a lot of us didn't grow up with RF-only inputs, so it's not any more nostalgic than just a normal AV CRT.
But, in a way, RF CRTs kind of feel like how our minds eye remembers CRTs from our 2020+ point of view.
I like to classify things like that as "pessimistic nostalgia."
It's not how it REALLY happened, we're not experiencing REAL nostalgia, it's like the nostalgia version of déjà vu.

ANYWAY that's enough spiritual bullshit. Here's a bunch of pictures I took of my RF CRT because I find them very pretty!
And please excuse my shitty camerawork. I'm a nerd, not a photographer :)

I recently acquired a pretty decent CRT unexpectedly from a neighbor, which was nice to have a CRT again because when I last set up my old one I had color issues.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some kind of stupid rig to get output from a PC or a macbook to the CRT for watching shows and movies.
I was wondering if I could do DisplayPort to VGA, and then get one of those VGA boxes that people say are pretty decent, because I'd like to use S-Video if possible.

just for movies and shows I would use a simple hdmi/displayport to s-video downscaler, you don't need to get fancy as long as it respects aspect ratios and doesn't crush the colors. Alternativey, you could/should use a ps3 either hacked to play mkv's or over a media server, because the ps3 is one of the best old media players around

The issue going from computers to s-vid and composite is that the market for those converters is very limited, and it mostly doesn’t account for quality. I don’t know of any good s-video converters. I suppose the highest quality thing to do is to get a string of DP-VGA-component-s-vid transcoders that don’t scale or apply processing at all. I think if you tried going straight from dp/vga to svid this would be impossible to find.
That’s why I think the ps3 that can do the media and the display processing natively is perfect.

from the service manual it looks like all analog inputs are converted into digital and scaled before being sent to the jungle chip. i couldn't find a datasheet for the jungle chip CXA2180QM or the "digital module", but the pins on the jungle input are listed as Y CB CR, indicating a digital signal. Interestingly, there seem to be some unused inputs on the jungle chip for both YCbCr (digital) and RGB, but based on the fact that the OSD RGB signal appears to be digital (osd chip M37151MA, i can't confirm that it's a digital signal but it seems like it) and all the other jungle chip inputs are digital, i can only assume the unused RGB input is also digital.
i have an hd toshiba which also has a scaling module which the service manual doesn't go into detail about. maybe it was a trade secret or something. at any rate, that sanyo tv seems to convert everything to digital hd and then display it. it might even only do 1080i, since that's what the service manual says. unknown if it would even do 540p or how it would display a 480p or SD signal. i can't even tell if it takes a 720p signal (it seems to, though), which usually indicates that it doesn't display native 480p

Hey fellas, its me again, the Lexus CRT guy, i tried to do some testing on the TV to adjust those internal nobs but when i plug the TV on one of my wall sockets i got no signal, so i went back to the power supply and i decided to actually solder this sons of bitches.

I have bought some stuff out of memory

Soldering Stein
The Soldering Gun (basic one)
Anti-static elexcrician gloves (not rubber ones)
Alligator clips
Canned Air spray

What else do i need to continue tomorrow?

>Soldering Gun
You either got something that isn't intended for electronics work and will damage your board with too much heat or you got some cheap piece of shit that will quickly lose its heat causing you to hold the gun to the board for too long resulting in damage. What you want is a temperature controlled soldering iron.

You don't need gloves or alligator clips. You shouldn't be touching anything that will get you shocked.

You didn't mention solder but I'm sure that you are aware that you need it. Unless lead free solder was originally used stick with regular solder. 63/37 is ideal if you can easily find it but 60/40 is perfectly fine. You will want something to remove the old solder; I find desoldering wick to be easier to use than a desoldering bulb. Flux will make the desoldering process easier.

Practice on something you don't care about first.

Also, for the love of god do not ever do such a cringeworthy hack job of a repair on a power cord like that again.

Neat, pretty much have to be able to fix it yourself unless you know a local guy who can. I want an early color tube set Zenith or RCA but I almost never see them here in Vancouver and some think old TV/Radio = worth a lot of money. Pisses me off, I just want to play Skyrim on a real old TV for kicks...and have to fix it when something inevitably goes wrong kek, I do electronics for fun anyway.
>and to keep whinging about item prices...not. maannnt want/can cope with something like an old TV/amp/radio but they want top dollar and whine how it doesn't sell. Bought an RCA radio from 1938...neat and gorgeous sure, amazing it survived and was $30. All it is worth IMO...there are lots of cool wood radios out there, supply exceeds demand, especially since sw is dead and am is on it's last legs. But a fuckin old, stinks like cigs, worn out CRT TV? Holy shit, better take out a loan and sell a motorcycle cause the asshole thinks it's worth $5000. Fucking retarded b.astards. Even a 50's B&W would be cool, hot chassis or not. Guess I could build my own, I do have a 6" CRT/driver board but persistence is kinda high and like you say why play on it...shitty experience.

Watch shango066 on yt, he covers a lot of ground but they eventually wear out though sometimes a weak crt is just one that is "asleep", running cathode current through it over a period of time can be night/day difference. Noticed the same shit with NOS power tubes incidentally, worse with ones never used due to chemical changes in the cathode emitting surface and potential loss of vacuum/paarts slowly offgassing.
>>10805108
There are guys on youtube who DIY tubes, I don't see it as being impossible to replace the cathode coatings, if a universal jig was made to keep in alignment the electron gun in respect to phosphor/shadow mask. Basically cut the stem/evacuation port, repair cathode then replace the glass cut (filler rod?). Maybe a similar idea for other components...phosphors die.
