Which Mario game do you think had the best controls? The worst?

>> No.1075445

I think they're all incredibly tight. I can't think of a single Mario game where I ever had a problem with the controls, even for a second.

I haven't played Mario Land though.

For me the best is Super Mario Bros. and the worst is land by far.

>> No.1075482

I really like the controls in Mario 2 (US). I was always able to perform tricky jumps and maneuvers once I knew how, including grabbing objects and enemies mid-air.

Paper Mario has kinda fucked up controls. I liked the mechanics in Mario RPG, but got continually frustrated trying to get a Nice attack or block in Paper Mario.

Super Mario Bros 1's controls are fucking shit after you get used to SMW's controls

Well, with World, there are a lot of slow segments. The game really doesn't have a lot of levels where you just run straight through and jump over everything. So it feels different.

>> No.1075556

Maybe my controller just sucks, but I swear that in SMB1, sometimes Mario will just stop dashing for no reason, even when the B button is held.

>> No.1075558

>>1075556
I've beaten the game more times than I can remember and that's never happened to me. I feel like Mario 1's controls are optimal for running fast the entire time and flying through stages, which is an element that I feel isn't present in world.

>> No.1075563

>>1075554

Agreed.

There's a right and wrong way to play the first two games(SMB2USA doesn't count). You're not supposed to take things slow, and stop after each jump. You're supposed to be dashing forward the entire time, stopping for nothing, save for a powerup block. Super Mario World is different.

>> No.1075578

SMB3 has tighter controls, particularly air control, than SMW.

>>1075563
I find this really amusing, because when I play SMB I hardly ever dash, but with SMW I'm practically dashing through the entirety of every level.

For me the most difficult/frustrating Mario game is SMB3.

>> No.1075584

All stars is the worst to me by far, even worse than land or clash

>> No.1075596

I always found 3 to be kind of awkward. Mario also felt too floaty, like he didn't have enough momentum.

As said before, SMW is just too slow, level-design wise. It's hard to really judge it's controls.

I still say SMB has the best and most tightest controls. If you asked me, if I wanted a never ending Mario experience, which game to base it on..It would be SMB.

Also, I think Mario 64 has amazing controls. Its just so fun to control Mario and move around.

>> No.1075598

>>1075584

All Stars threw me off with how you break through bricks. You go right up through them. This fucked me up when I thought I'd bounce off them at an angle.

Other than that...are they really that bad? I cant recall All Stars feeling weird or not good enough. Perhaps a bit more slippery but maybe thats my imagination

>> No.1075603

why is there even a dash button in super mario. doesnt everyone just hold it down the whole time. i only release it when im making super precise jumps (like the end of 8-1) and not every time

i dont see the point. why not just have him dash the entire time anyway

>> No.1075605

>>1075596

Yes! Thanks for pointing out that Super Mario World is too slow.

As for my opinion, though, I will always say SMB3 had the best controls.

I have no idea what thread you are even talking. I could ask the same to you, though. Do you really just sit around and wait for someone to say something negative about Super Mario World? And assume it has to be the same person?

Question about SMB3, is it normal for there to be some kind of color glitching/flickering on the sides as the screen scrolls horizontally? I've seen this with both a real SMB3 cart and with SMB3 on a flash cart. Other side-scrolling games don't do this though (either on real carts or flashcart). Why does SMB3 do it? Could there be something wrong with my console?

>> No.1075671

>>1075653
OK, realized I had an emulator installed on my PC, so I tried SMB3 there and the same glitching happens. I guess it's just part of the game. Odd though, you'd think they'd try to fix something like that. It looks bad.

No, you need 2 different controllers.
I'm playing through SMW right now, using both Mario and Luigi, using a 3rd party wireless SNES controller that allows me to switch between 1P and 2P, I play using both players on 1 pad. So while I beat the normal levels with Mario, I do the secret paths with Luigi, or viceversa, it's fun.

>> No.1077187

Maybe I just suck at it, but I never liked the controls for Mario 3. Using Racoon Mario always felt clunky to me, with the hovering in air + spin moves. Maybe I just found the world 8 ships overly frusturating, but I recall a lot of annoying moments in that game. I often felt like the game was cheap. Again, maybe I just suck.

Also, this is a problem I have with Mario games in general: bouncing off stuff. Trampolines, koopas or music note boxes. Sometimes it feels like you bounce off at full height, other times it bounces you a tiny bit and sends you to your death.

I feel you, although I have never actually been able to beat a Mario game. I usually give up around World 4 in SMB3, or Forest of Illusion in SMW, etc... I am not very talented, but I have a lot of fun, and am periodically attempting to finally beat them.

I found that Raccoon Mario felt like that when I was trying to flutter while holding run. It is much easier when only tapping the jump button, as it is no longer necessary to hold run while in flight.

When jumping off of those types of objects, the longer you hold jump, the higher. It has to be pretty precise though, as in, press jump immediately as you hit the object. If you don't press it immediately, you get minimal air, which is normally not satisfactory. You may just want to spend some time practicing.

I liked the controls of World, but I loved the back flips of Super Mario 64 and the timed-hits of Super Mario RPG were genius. It was an amazing new element added to traditional turn-based gameplay.

Super Mario World had tight controls, but I don't think they measure up to some of Mario's other games.

You know, I should start a new thread and do a straw poll asking gamers which character they played as in Super Mario Bros 2.

It's funny to me how their stats in SMB3 carried over into the Mario Kart series. Like, Toad remained quick and sharp with his turns, while Mario remained an all-around character. Too bad Toadstool's kart cannot hover over pits!

>> No.1077650

Exactly. Everyone knows SMB2 was influential with enemies and motifs, but I feel like a lot of people forget that it played a huge part in developing the main characters.

On a side note, glad Nintendo is bringing back those very attributes for the upcoming 3D World.

>> No.1077726

Control-wise, I'm stuck between SMB and SMB3.

SMB's controls feel very tight and it feels like every time you jump your momentum from beforehand heavily affects it, so when you're running at top speed, you have little control over your jump, which I can appreciate since it makes sense and makes mastering Mario's jump in that game rewarding.

On the other hand, SMB3's controls have much more freedom, but it has never felt floaty to me. Momentum doesn't play as big a part in the jump physics so it makes controlling Mario a lot easier. I also really like the P-meter and maintaining a run through a level at full speed has always felt rewarding. I also can't really fault the flight controls either.

If I was to go on controls alone, I would pick SMB but SMB3's controls complement its level design much better so as a whole I prefer SMB3.

I haven't played the super mario land games so I'll just go with my worst experience which is SMB2 (JP) as Luigi.

>>1077209
>Seeing people play like this infuriates the hell out of me.

To be fair, in SMB, the game loses half of its difficulty (if you're new to it) if you walk most of it since you have so much more control over your jump.

>> No.1077738

>>1077614

I think I saw a thread kinda like that a while ago, I was surprised to see a lot of support for Luigi (who was too clumsy for me when I was a kid) and very very little for Toad (who is the most agile, to my perception, and therefore the best--except of course when you REALLY need to land on the jumping fish or whatever)

>> No.1077748

Best: SMB3. World was close but 3 was Mario perfected. By far. The feel of that game was just unmatched.

Worst: SM64. I hate even mentioning this to anyone, anywhere, because somehow everyone has this belief that SM64 is perfect/game of the year all years/flawless/etc. And I just do not get it or understand it at all. The controls were touchy, not accurate at all, inappropriate for a 3D environment, and made worse by a glitchy camera that suddenly decided to swing around as you made a jump thus throwing you off completely. It's like you had to memorize exactly what the game was going to do in a specific situation to make it worth doing.

Again, I know everyone will disagree with me/hate me/yell at me, but after trying it over and over and over ever since the damn thing came out (and I was an adult back then, so I'm not affected by the nostalgia which might be part of the problem), and even though I eventually put together a series of EXTREMELY frustrating sessions with that game to get the bare minimum number of stars to beat the game and then doing so, I still maintain that it is, by far, the worst Mario game ever created.

Bring on the hate.
