One of the best /vr/ games ever made. Atmosphere and ambience alone was nailed so hard. This games world feels more alive than games that have come out decades after. Sadly due to YouTubers its reputation has been unfairly diminished.

I love these adventure games, I grew up with them but shit, it's always the same problem I have with them. I run around the entire perimeter of the map, I can't find all of the golden bananas, and then I just keep going around and around for fucking HOURS.

Really just getting that mod that lets you swap Kongs out on the fly makes a huge difference.

it's probably the pinnacle of the 3d collectathon platofrmers despite existing in the genres infancy.

I never remember having a problem with this game. While it is true that I haven't played extensively since renting it literally 25 years ago or briefly before my Wii U fried itself, I never remember having issues getting mixed up with the collectables. Only good memories.

That said, maybe I'm a low-info retard, so I'll play around with it for a while soon and see if the switching becomes an actual issue needing that hack.

It's weird that people hate it so strongly for that exact reason. It's the very idea of a collectathon taken to it's natural conclusion.

this game would really have benefited from being released on wii vc. 480i/p and stabilizing its framerate.

>> No.10742868

On Wii U VC there's a minigame that is damn near impossible because having a stable frame rate makes it too fast to react.

Oh I didn't know it was on Wii U VC. 1 impossible minigame is still probably better than 10 average fps at all times.

Wii U VC adds a "darkness filter" to every N64 game, though... I would suggest Wii VC, but I don't think it ever came out on that.

>> No.10742946

repetitive mini-games really hurts the game, along with needing to switch kongs every 5 seconds. yeah the mod improves that a lot but that doesn't change the fact the original is deeply flawed

This game sucks, your nostalgia betrays you. One of the most miserable experiences I ever had playing a game. We're talking "ruined Christmas" levels of miserable.

Elaborating...I was predisposed to loving this game. I loved the DKC trilogy and I had loved most 3D collectathons up to this point. I had 100%'d B-K MULTIPLE TIMES. The only current game system I owned was the N64. I received this for Christmas and was looking forward to blowing the rest of winter break playing DK64.
By the time I got to the third level, the factory with the robots around every corner, I realized something - I wasn't having any fun. It was boring, like aggressively boring. The game was just tunnels that connected stupid minigames. The graphics were dark and dreary, and yes the character switching. It was just collecting shit for the sake of collecting shit. There was NOTHING THERE. I soldiered on and beat it with my completion score barely cracking 50%. I sold it a month later and used the cash to buy NES games.

Previous games in this genre found ways to make collecting actually fun and rewarding. DK 64 does not, hope this helps.

The music, the atmosphere, and the stages carry the game. The presentation is wonderful but the gameplay is trash. donkeys coming out of your ass mod doesnt really help.

It's nowhere near as good a 3D collectathon as Banjo-Kazooie was. DK64 is a classic example of too much of a good thing.

Stupid revisionism. The game was criticized for too much backtracking when it was released, and the things people criticize about it now are the same things people were criticizing 10 years ago. It's by no means not a bad game, but it goes way overboard. DK64 is the reason people criticize collectathons for being tedious, when in fact that is not the case with a well designed collectathon.

Came here to say this basically. I grew up with it, it's still a fun game but between not being an actual DKC game and being both bigger and more repetitive than Banjo-Kazooie it didn't really get as much recognition as either for that reason. I do agree that it had very nice atmosphere and ambiance though, just as much if not more than the original DKC series. I also agree that it feels much more "alive" and all around better than later games in the genre, particularly the few attempts during sixth gen

Yes, of course. Unlike you I actually own a physical banana yellow copy. In one store I was at, they had the game running on a TV attached to the ceiling, you couldn't play it which meant the D.K Rap was playing on a loop between a brief gameplay demo and it was glorious.

It did get very good reviews, but it was also criticized for it's backtracking.
>Now everyone acts like it's worse than hitler because you cant change kongs with the dpad.
Also completely fucking false, every time I see people talk about this game they talk about how it's a decent game with a lot of flaws. You're suffering from the classic syndrome of believing that every extreme end is the common opinion.

Glad to see this game get the love and respect it deserves. It’s a brilliant journey 100%ing it. It’s hard to find games that are long enough to feel complete to me, other than RPGs which I get kinda sick of, which is why I appreciate the ten million collectibles DK64 has.
