Speaking of, there was a thread on /v/ recently with a bunch of people complaining over localization. Saying Woolsey was the devil, a bad translator, and the originator of localizers ruining Japanese games. Some anon baited a bunch of the tryhard translator weebs on there by asking them to translate a line from FF6 and all of them wound up making the same translation error that Woolsey did. It was pretty funny.

Tomato (Clyde Mandelin) has a series on YouTube where he plays FF6 with a software that allows him to compare multiple translations at the same time, and in the vast majority of cases the GBA translation is the most reliable and faithful rendition from japanese to english.

I remember the SNES version of Breath of Fire 2 had a similar translation error. The Yes and No in this question are actually reversed, which is pretty important since it's not just a question asking if you need an explanation but also asking if you want to join souls, which was a major mechanic of the game.

I recall that the GBA versions of BoF 1 & 2 re-used the SNES script wholesale, meaning all of the errors were left intact.

I recall that one of the games had a major error with directing players to travel east from a town, when progressing the game would actually be travelling west.

How did that line cause the creation of Akuma? It was a mis-translation of one of his moves, but people thought it was the name of his master who was revealed in the manga in 1993 to be Gouken, and then put into SF4.

He's saying, in a single line: "Attack while it's tail is up", the problem is that the next line says "And it will use its counter attack!" but the battle is still going while they are talking, so you will likely have already selected an attack before the second message came up. It's like a skit I used to see in cartoons all the time back then when someone is reading instructions, is directed towards something, and then told NOT to mess with said thing they have already messed with by now.

Badly translated script was the least of that game's problems, there was near-impossible quests with no indication of how to do it properly, skills and abilities that flat out didn't work, an encounter rate that was so high you would think it was a joke, the game was a mess.

The original April Fool's joke stated that Sheng Long appeared, promptly beat up M. Bison, and threw him away before attacking the player. Capcom borrowed that exact introduction and even copied similar conditions for unlocking it as the magazine, though less severe(the hoax claimed no getting hit, the actual condition in SF2T was no continues). It wasn't the same character, but the hoax was so popular that it led to the creation of Akuma.
