Aren't they all save for Celes and Terra (and Setzer too I guess since he gives you the airship)? Also, he's a nice addition party-wise if you have lots of shit to throw. Double defense-ignoring damage you can target is nothing to sneeze at, and you don't have to teach him shit, plus his best equipment is fairly easy to get. Only Sabin maxes out his potential more easily.

They are indeed strong, but honestly, Falchions are not that far off and can be store-bought. They are a bit expensive, but by that point you pretty much won't be buying jack shit anyway besides maybe tents, so you ought to have enough to max out or nearly so. It's also a good idea to buy elemental weapons, so Shadow can do crazy damage to enemies weak to elements. Shame that the only good Wind-elemental weapon you can get en-masse can only be bought in the WoB, though.

Eh, honestly, you're not missing a whole lot. The game's so easy it really doesn't matter a whole lot. Like, sure, Locke and Shadow get hit less by physicals, but for the most part those aren't even the attacks you're usually worried about unless they're in the front row, and Locke is one of the only characters that should ever be there. It does, of course, nerf the ridiculous 128 MBlock setups that make you nigh invincible.

Someone here said they were doing a playthrough where they try to minimize leveling to take advantage of the esper bonuses later and I thought that might be fun to increase the challenge at the beginning a bit and then maximize stats in the end game.

I really liked this one and I'm always looking for new ways to play it. I went down the game genie code rabbit hole and came very close to doing some things that were always thought to be impossible. The airship glitch really opens up a lot of possibilities. There are several 'walk through walls' gg codes out there, but came up with one that works better than all the others.

Ah, then that's a different story. I myself tried something like that, except I more or less stopped leveling altogether at around levels 19 to 22. The final bosses were still rather trivial, but mostly because of the absolutely busted 128 MBlock setups, which also come with high Magic Defense for those attacks that happen to be unblockable (save for shit like Meteor that will fuck your shit up no matter what, of course). Without that crutch, I do imagine the game becomes quite a bit more difficult at those lower levels.
