Are the SMS Sonic games any good? They're so completely overshadowed, were they just inferior remakes of the real games?

They're about as good as the 8bit Mario games.

I'll admit 3 is better than the 8 bit Sonic games I've played

>> No.1073156

The Game Gear Sonics were some of the first games I ever owned, when I was like 7. They're pretty decent, but they feel a lot different from the Genesis Sonics and they tend to be pretty short and easy (except for Sonic 2 which was hard as balls at times, especially if you're trying to get all the emeralds so you can play the final zone). Triple Trouble is probably my favorite and is super underrated in my opinion. I also remember loving Tails' Adventure even though it doesn't play like a normal Sonic game at all.

Sonic 2 GG was freakin' dark. It was the most hardcore Sonic game.

>> No.1073202

Sonic 2 for the SMS is one of the hardest Sonic games made.

It's a shame that Sega only seem to want to sell the crappy GG ports.

>> No.1073207

Oh yeah, also Janet Jackson stole the Bridge Zone's music for her song "Together Again"

>> No.1073210

They aren't inferior ports. They're their own games.

>> No.1073213

>>1073210
No, they're ports. The Master System and the Game Gear Sonic games were the same, except that the GG versions had a smaller field of view and weaker graphics and sound. They also didn't handle rings very well.

Don't think we're talking about the Megadrive games,

>> No.1073217

it's a shame the master system versions didn't take advantage of the FM-Synth chip. It would've been cool to hear some of those tunes with better sound hardware. I think the stock master system sound is horrendous.

The only thing that made the GG version harder was that the GG version had a smaller field of view, meaning it was harder to see where you were going and made fighting bosses much more difficult. The level designs themselves were identical.

Not sure but I know that Micheal Jackson had helped compose some of the music and the end credit track for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He claims he removed his name from the credits because he didn't like how his tracks sounded but it was around the time he was facing trial for accusations of child molestation so...?

His song Strangers in Moscow stemmed from the end credits in Sonic 3.

It is just speculation, regarding strangers in Moscow but unlike the bridge zone's track, the end credit track on Sonic 3 isn't exactly a generic sound and taking into consideration he did write the track, it can't be coincidence.

>Sonic 2 for the SMS is one of the hardest Sonic games made.
The final boss is really the only tricky part, I swear if you're talking about the first boss you need a slap. The first boss is supposedly hard on Game Gear because of the tiny screen size, the Master System version is easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Overall the game is much easier than the Advance and Rush games and most of the 3D ones. There are no cheap deaths caused by poor design, falling the the floor bugs or gotta go fast

>> No.1073294

>>1073278
They're also easier to dodge because you can see them coming a mile away. Also, the bounces vary in height.

Either way, only the most pathetic pedant would say that they are "completely" different.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWksbrzGH0w

Easier than the modern games? I don't think so. For a start, they save before every level.

No matter how much you die, you're only one level set back and they practically throw lives at you these days.

>> No.1073354

>>1073307
But it's easier to stay alive, seeing as the game doesn't randomly make you lose control of your character and throw him into a pit. I'd say a game that gives you less game overs, or none, is easier than a game that gives you more game overs with less penalty.

But that's just how I perceive difficulty, I do understand your point.

For those arguing that the GG and SMS games are identical. The Master System versions has smoother sprites and backgrounds and the opening title screen looks better on the SMS

>> No.1073714

Pretty lame compared to the Genesis games in my opinion. The physics engine is the merest shadow of the real thing, and the levels don't give the same feel at all. I really do think they could've done better even with the limited hardware -- just look at Gimmick on NES. They're still pretty decent little oldschool games though.

>> No.1073716

This.
SMB3 is tighter but SMW has more puzzles.
SMB3 on the SMAS is worse in everything except the added palettes and more rendered layers like the moving backgrounds because the sound in SMB3 on SMAS is horrible and while it works on SMW it doesn't sit as good on the classic SMB3.

Also, Wii version of New SMB on Dolphin > SMBU on WiiU because it has less unbearable Bah Bah BAAAH.

SM64 has good music but I never really liked the game itself due to it's jerky and delay-feel controls.
Also because I didn't own my own N64 at the time so this is my biased opinion on Super Mario.

Sonic 1 for Master System is one of the best Sonic games ever made. For what it lacked in big graphics on the Mega Drive they made up for with gameplay and some great, memorable, music.

I'm making the world's first level editor for it. I was honestly surprised it didn't exist yet. It's a little too early for the moment to release it, but I will make a proper thread once it's ready for proper use.
