The way it works is by using a precomputed distortion map made of 2D offsets. For each pixel of the globe, it takes a value from the distortion map, adds the current camera position, and then uses the result to sample a 256x256 source texture. This gives it a globe-like shape, but the same technique could be applied to other shapes as well.

As for rounding out the corners, that's done by filling the corners of the distortion map with a special sentinel value. The renderer knows to look for said value and, if found, always draw black for that pixel.

All-in-all it's a pretty simple effect. Just thought I'd share.

How is the state of emulation on hacked Wiis, before I sink another welfae check on controllers and adapters? (that I am likely to just also use with PC anyway) I already have all the usual 3GHz HLE emulators installed on my computer and I've been having a lot of fun with those, and I can't stress enough that they look really nice as well, but I am trying to get that 240p resolution output for hooking up to a CRT for that AUTHENTIC EXPREIENCE which is why I'm digging out my old Wii again.

I'd look up videos on the topic but any videos that have any actually useful information and offer comparisons between emulator and hardware are 10+ years old

the main dealbreaker for me is going to be SNES9X, and really all I care about because I own every console past that. I can say I remember it having no problems with LTTP about a year ago when I tried this beforehand with a different TV, and it looked (to my knowledge) great too, but that TV didn't have a reliable sound output for me to gauge the emulators audio capabilities.

Is the input lag still relatively "bad"? I saw forums from like 10 years ago brought this issue up a lot and it's reasonable to believe that that would be the one thing that hasn't been improved upon in all those years.

anyway I was just pondering all this cause I've been really enjoying HLE emulation so much on my PC and just wanted to see how much of that experience I can preserve playing these games on a 20 year old console to get a more authentic TV and controller experience as well.

Speaking of this question >>10721172, can anyone here help me with this problem?:

The English translation of Custom Robo (and Chameleon Twist (JP), for that matter) "Fails to save" on (at least) Wii's N64 emulators like Not 64 and Wii64. It not only displays that message, but it doesn't even create save data AND it doesn't even let me save state!

Any idea how to fix this? What line of code in a hex editor do I need to edit? Every change I've made to it causes worse issues (such as the games failing to start at all). Related to this point, I've noticed a bunch of "@" symbols appear next to the header names when starting up those (specific, disfunctional) games, but why do they show up?

Thanks for your help, anons.

The first one is for Bikkuriman World - Gekitou Sei Senshi and is an addendum for the old teaser patch which fixes a critical crash in the late game and ""translates"" many more gameplay related elements like skill names, character names, items, etc

The second one is for Dragon Ball 3 - Gokuu Den and changes the attack types in the middle of cards to drawings (most of which I took from the translation of DB2) and the kanji defense numbers to dots

Not gonna release these "officialy" because they are quick shit job, I just did this for myself to make gameplay a little more understandable but maybe it will interest someone else

Hey, dumb question: Does homebrew strictly apply to making new games for old hardware or does it extend to making new games using old authoring tools? If I made a game using Macromedia Flash 8, would that count as a homebrew or just a more difficult way doing something that could've been more easily accomplished using a modern engine?

>> No.10724426

>>10724385
Wikipedia says that homebrew, when applied to video games, refers to software produced by hobbyists for proprietary video game consoles which are not intended to be user-programmable: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homebrew_(video_games)
According to that, if you use Flash 8 to make a PC game it would not be homebrew.

>> No.10724456

>>10724426
Thanks for clearing that up. I was confused about it because new Flash content has been made in recent years for the purpose of taking advantage of a Flash emulator called Ruffle. I think interactive Flash content is considered defunct retro tech at this point, but I'm not sure what the exact term is to describe a hobbyist continuing to develop games with it and distribute it via emulation.

>> No.10724748

>>10724456
Wikipedia isn't the source of all truth, and everyone has a different meaning for homebrew.
For example, according to wikipedia definition msx can't have homebrew since it isn't a video game console.
It also ignores commercial homebrew, since it is a hobby thing.

Not that anon, but...
The technical part of translating games can get pretty, well, technical. Unless you have some programming knowledge, it can be difficult to understand what exactly you're dealing with. Maybe start by writing a simple program for the system? It might not be the most direct approach, but it worked well enough for me.

>> No.10727154

>>10727109
I don't know shit about GB but on NES you can often just check the PPU tiler viewer and see the alphabet to know which tile corresponds to which byte. Of course it's not always that simple as some games may have an extra step in the process, for one reason or another (like in the case where they need to put a tile above another to have the full character etc). You'll have to figure out by yourself bytes for special instructions like return to line as well. In the case of the NES sometimes you can check a line in the PPU RAM, and if the string appears identical in the ROM, then you're in luck. Again I'm not sure how much of that applies to GB.

Last I remember, the untranslated roms work as they should, yes. So what could be the issue with the translated roms, and why are they displaying "@@@@" in their header?

In an editor for either of these games (as well as with the translated version of "Wave Race 64: Rumble Pak Version") those "@" symbols don't show in the header name, but they do show up when the emulator displays the header name. I don't think every N64 hacked rom has this same issue, just these specific translation hacks (that I know of). By the way, I guess it's significant to note that both of these patches were done by different hackers, so it doesn't seem to be the issue of a specific translator's.

So, what about these translation hacks do you think may be causing these "@" symbols to appear in the header name concurrently with disabling saving (whether battery saves or save states)?

what the hell is this referring to
i had no problem doing literally everything to the 3ds and putting hundreds of games on it, a bunch of emulators, h shop, transferring files with FTPD or whatever, it all works great and it was super easy

but this guide just starts right off talking about some SD card and a "wiiu" folder on it and i have no idea what they're talking about

i thought at first they meant to put a SD card into the SD card slot and format it and then that folder would show up but no, this is impossible, wii u wont format that card and theres nothing on it after plugging it back into my computer

is there some SD card inside it that i need to take out? i already fucked up and removed and reinserted some battery for no reason thinking that was maybe it

Not him, but I've implemented the same thing independently.
GBA ROM speed is controlled by a r/w hardware register. You can just read some bytes from ROM at the lowest speed, increase the speed, and then compare them to the bytes you read at a higher speed. If they match, it's stable.

Remember to place the check code in RAM so the game doesn't hang up when you increase ROM speed.
Also remember to check if the desired read speed is the one you want (check that your ROM hasn't been patched).

I've heard that there is a better way to do a network share than SAMBA for PS2 games these days. Does anyone know what that might be? My phat PS2 died but I have a working PS2 Slim, so I'd like to get that going if there is something with higher compatibility than SAMBA.

I'll be honest, the only reason I considered it is because I was looking at auctions for games and saw this cartridge with its label stripped completely off for some reason. I thought it'd be neat to try and make a custom sticker for it with my own creations. After that, I remembered how some people made their own unique games for retro consoles, and with the open source cartridge reader I have, I could put my own game onto this thing. Does anyone know how can I rip the graphics from SNES games, specifically the SMT games, in a reliable way? Or, is there a texture dumb for these games anywhere?

For B3313 v1.0, the ROM is pretty large (96MB, also on v0.9 and Unabandoned; unofficial version) because, a combination of the SM64 ROM Manager tool, pretty much didn't know about MIO0 compression + Chris absolutely refusing to optimize (not bloat) the ROM to the original 64MB.
