Yep, I recommend a playthrough in cronological order to get the full experience.
Be warned that Arc 2 is fucking MASSIVE and took me ~60h to beat fully, compared to the meager 10h of Arc I.

It’s slightly above average. It has good pixel art (more detailed than what you’d find in a snes game), every character has cool spells, there is a big dungeon you can beat to get a pen unique summon spell.
However, the story and character development are ass, the game throws at you the same set of enemies with different colors, and you just travel around the world collecting some macguffin. The final boss is underwhelming and the game becomes interesting just when it finishes. But Arc 2 let you import your old characters, so it may be worth visiting first.

I finished the first one recently. Lots of bugs and frankly, kind of dull. The bonus dungeon is a strong summon that, by the time you get it, you are too strong for everything anyway, and even better, you can't even use it in the story battles.

I heard the second one is best so I might give it a shot.
