>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)
Anbernic: Balance between price, power and build quality. Many available products
Powkiddy: Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes (square, clamshell, big screen)
Miyoo: One hit wonder
Game Console: Copycat popular products with low prices

>How do I get games
Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy x55 (90$, horizontal, 5.5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Powkiddy RGB30 (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (40$, vertical, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, up to PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Throw them away and buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

So... how are my fellow smartphone CHADS here doing? I'm playing a few different ROMs, though I'm not really beating anything new recently, the whole month has been tiresome, though I'm still managing to finish some replays of stuff I already know and like, it's comfortable, and in the end its part of the fun of these handhelds too, comfort.

I might take this with me on a trip tomorrow, but it's not really a trip where I'll have tons of time at it, so I'm torn on taking it or not, we'll see I guess.

Also, do any of you use shaders on these? I keep trying a few and never really settle on one, I'm a big fan of simpletex_lcd_720p for now though.

I'm eyeing the Odin 2 but it's honestly impossible to justify the purchase when you can get the superior steam deck for only $50 more (or cheaper than the pro by $20). And if you want to pump up to current gen PC games it's only another $250 for a rog ally.

Outside of retroid these chinkheld companies simply cannot price themselves competitively and I think this hurts them more in the long run.

based asker and like-minded anon. You're right though, if something like this were actually being produced, it'd probably make more sense to move stuff around so you could fit a right analog on there too and broaden the appeal. A lot of the PS2 stuff I play is either fine just having a shoulder button as "snap camera behind player", or straight up doesn't use the stick in a meaningful way at all. Many others do definitely need a right stick, though.

The Deck is not portable, the deck has a far inferior battery, the Odin feels more comfortable to hold (personal opinion obviously).

There is no reason to upgrade past the base Odin 2 for 99% of use cases. If you already have a capable pc/laptop then you don't need another thing that plays PC games on the go. You're more likely looking for something that you can throw in a side compartment on backpack and whip it out to play while commuting or just something to dick around with in bed for awhile. I'm not sure why you think the Odin 2 needs to be cheaper, it's an insanely strong device and not with shit-tier build/parts like the other stuff mentioned in the OP. Considering how much demand/publicity the Odin got, I don't think the pricing hurt them at all.

i don't want to come off like i'm shilling for them or anything, but it's not exactly hard to think of why someone would want one over the other.

Technically sure, but the whole point of a handheld system is to be convenient and portable, and having to carry around a whole controller along with a phone clip that can't fully collapse, and then having to set it up every time you wanna play a game, isn't exactly convenient or portable. And even then it feels awkward to hold because now your controller's weirdly topheavy. Combine that with the fact that now you're either gonna have to deal with texts/calls/app notifs getting in the way of your game, or set yourself on airplane mode and lose the phone functionality while you play.

Sure, it technically does the job, but you have to go so out of your way it kinda defeats the point.

Main problem is Saturn has no "killer apps".

As thread proved when ES dev tried getting paid for his work, the retro community hates it when anything isn't free, and as a result most emulation dev is 100% done out of the desire to have these games playable. Problem is Saturn's library doesn't really have much in the way of "beloved classics" outside of Panzer Dragoon (which even then is kinda obscure), as such it's hard to get a lot of people working towards further development.

Also, attachable controllers all fucking suck and usb controllers, while fine, just feel weird to use hooked up to a tiny phone and then you have to deal with mounting or balancing your phone on something and it hurts your neck and shit.
More importantly than all that though, there is just something about playing games on a dedicated handheld that just feels right. I can't explain it, maybe it's nostalgia or something but it is just a way better experience.

Gonna ask how people USB C charge their devices because, the R36 is a bit of a pain in the ass to charge. I have USB C & A chargers that support PD but the device doesn't, so using a USB C to C cable that supports data results in no charge.

So I got a USB A to A extension cable (have many of them) and they usually don't strangle current but turns out when the tiny, cheapo USB A to C cable was used with one it'd cap out at 5w or less and slow charge, on its own I can get a device to charge around 6.5-7w which is about what I'd expect but it's fucking teeny.
At this point both my tablets and my phone are charged to 80-90% so it's going to be a few days before I can retest and get full current down them but I went out on a limb and connected my regular USB C cables to USB A male adapters and plugged them into a PD and regular charger and lo and behold, 6.5-7w too.

So is this the normal setup people use then to charge 'em? USB A (m) to USB C (f) adapters with C to C cables into devices? Will a more expensive adapter cuck me? If I buy USB A to C cables there's a chance of incompatibility and it's more e waste while I could spring for a few cheap USB a to C adapters instead.

God. I fucking despise USB C chargers & cable incompatibilities. I don't even blame USB C. I blame micro-usb for being cancer first.

The new firmware has every feature on the function switch disabled by default, whether it's flipped off or on. And I STILL felt stutters. And even if it was because of battery-saving mode, if the chip is so weak that battery-saving mode alone prevents you from having smooth GBA, then this thing ain't worth $60.

And as for what reviews say, only ONE review mentioned the fake front speaker issue, and NONE of them mentioned the inability to download new cores, or there being no way to make your own categories like the Pokemon one included in the stock games card. I genuinely think most of them didn't touch this thing for more than an hour or two, so they didn't see the bigger problems. Or maybe it's because none of them play on 2x speed regularly, while I'm a madman who likes to grind hardcore Pokemon ROMhacks. I have an RGB30, and it can do 3x sped-up GBA just fine, so maybe it's just not "fast enough" for me personally?

I'm gonna follow Jewey's guide and try MinUI on it, and if that doesn't work, then I'm calling it quits.

I can't believe the trimui turned out to be such a bummer then, where did they go wrong with the OS that it's locked down? I was already accepting I'd be looking for an alternate OS but I watched the updated reviews .
Last I checked reviews it was retroarch so there's really no way to install new cores and stuff? Is the filesystem encrypted so you can't copy over the retroarch files or was I like hallucinating parts of the retroarch review I saw and it's all custom.

I got my stuff on my shitbrick via wifi, well, I could even get it on via mounting the card on a linux desktop and copying over manually and some cute hero here told me I could copy it from one SD to another without configging retroarch.
It really does run retroarch yeah but you can't save settings? even after toggling the flag like you would normally? What would cause that a CHMOD issue or smth?

Hoping our trimui pro can help others in the future. They did say after all it should be removed from the OP.

I'll have to check if I'm still within the return policy, since I spent more time than I should have trying to get this thing to work, since I really wanted it to, since the presentation of the device really was top-notich. BTW, thanks for genuineposting at the end instead of ironying yourself to death. I appreciate having a sincere conversation on this website for once.

>Last I checked reviews it was retroarch so there's really no way to install new cores and stuff?
There's wifi, but the only feature for it is netplay. That's the only one I found, and it's the only one the reviewers found, so unless there's another feature that TrimUI didn't mention because the device didn't come with a manual, that's it. I even asked on the subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/trimui/comments/1arrzps/how_do_i_download_new_retroarch_cores_on_the/
And the one response said no, the feature isn't enabled, so I guess that's as far as it goes.

It's not great for finesse, but most people don't seem to care. What concerns me most is one video showed the exact same wacky deadzone as my X28. I'm going on a conjecture here but if this sticks do behave exactly like the X28's, one of the things cardinal snapping does is sometimes the input will jump to the opposite direction for a few frames, which gives you fake inputs on digital inputs like N64's C buttons (happens to both sticks), and apparently out of all owners only me and some other guy here noticed the problem. Again, I don't know if that's the case for RG556, but the similarities got me wary.

PSP Go guy again, I think the honeymoon period is over for me. I've been putting in many hours on it and I'm not sure it fits my use case anymore.
As a handheld, it's not very comfortable to hold for long periods. The analog stick is in a much better position compared to the regular PSP, but overall it's very cramped due to how thin and flattened out it is. I can do a few rounds in CTR just fine, but during my playthrough of Ys Oath in Felghana I kept stopping to massage my hands and prevent cramping.
I did however buy and fix this in order to do game capture from real PSP hardware, and even though it's been giving me problems due to how it does display out I've found it to be great at it, especially because the Dualshock 3 alleviates the controls issue. Here's the thing: I've owned a PSTV for over two years now, and after comparing the footage I've found that the capture is almost exactly the same between the two. Just have Sharpscale installed and set the PSTV to 480p, then PSP games will display just like they do on a real PSP, just through HDMI instead of component. Runs the same too, which was a given since the Vita uses most of the same hardware that's in the PSP.
I actually stopped using the PSP Go entirely last week, I started a playthrough of Monster Hunter Freedom 1 using the Go for the first 3 hours, then swapped over to the PSTV and found there was essentially no difference in doing so with my setup. It sucks because it cost me about $300USD getting all the stuff together and a long weekend fixing the PSP Go, but it was at least a nice little project for me to tinker with. I don't think I'll be using it all that much in the future, and I might even end up selling it down the line just so it doesn't collect dust in a bin.

I read into this and unfortunately at the moment no rock solid ps3 emulators exist for mobile at the moment.
PS3 emulation on android is nonexistent at the moment. Nothing public about active development either. The hardware is technically there. But the ps3 is insanely complex console, so development will take a lot of time. RPCS3 on pc has made great strides, but isnt nearly at a 100% "playable" level yet. So we are a ways away from android.

ps2 runs great.

RIP, I'm the other Go owner and yeah the cramping issue's a problem since it's so small. It's mostly good for RPGs and menu based games where you don't have to clutch it.
When the Vita came out I'd dropped it for a Vita and I'd been using the Go with the controller full time.

I'd like to switch over to the PSTV, I owned one but I suspect it's dead and I'm not sure if they've been gouged to hell and back yet. I don't have any luck with Vita hardware, the memory situation with that platform irks & dissuades me.
At least you got to experience its fantastic little screen, I love have PSP games look on it and unlike the gb micro the games don't end up too small.

Pay $15 more and get the Odin 2 over the RG556. Anerbic quality can be really hit or miss, and their sticks suck, the placement of the sticks suck, the dpad is glossy and weird and the triggers apparently are stiff as hell. Couple that with reduced performance of the chip w/ PS2/GC+ games (don't even think about switch) and I cannot think of why if you're willing to spend nearly $200 you don't just spend $200 and have a much better experience.

Kek I was eyeing the Odin 2 originally but the price point is way above my budget. Unironically at that point I'd just shell out $50 more for a refurbished LCD Deck.

I'm actually not that concerned about the power though. I had an rp3+ and could play some ps2/gc at 1x just fine. The rg556 is supposed to be even better so I'm sure I can play most of the library with only minor tweaks or downgrade to PAL.

But the sticks though, that's honestly kinda weird. Only a few reviewers have pointed out the sticks are shit and even then they don't actually say it affects emulation. No testing stuff like super mario 64 or crazy taxi. They just say it sucks for shooters and that's it.

Also as an aside it's not worth upgrading to the Deck over the Odin 2 because those are 2 completely different use-cases. One is portable and has a great life, the other is a behemoth and overkill for retro emulation with a shit battery life.

I do appreciate other people's perspectives, but this is mind boggling to me. Yes the Odin 2 is smaller, but you're still throwing both of them in your backpack and the Deck is only 200g heavier. Also the Deck has amazing battery life for lower TDP emulation which doesn't make it much worse than the Odin 2 that it's a non-issue.

We could think about the possibility of snuffing out the person who made the design but that might not be enough

Anon pls. It's a problem there too, in fact the DS4 & every edition of the XB1 controller have been drift magnets, even the elite controllers had shitty ALPS sticks inside.
>either their quality control is worse
?????
What?
Anon, they buy them in bulk from ALPS, ALPS are the ones responsible for QC on that, Nintendo really can't do much more QC beyond that, same for Sony & MS in this situation too.
>or they approved an inherently shit design.
Yes, by using inferior parts to save fractions of a cent on a design they are going to upsell. It's a peripheral, they want you to buy more and replace them.
It's the same with Logitech, Razer etc or any mouse thread where someone complains about X brand double clicking. They can use cheap parts because it brings their margins down and when it goes out in a few years you'll buy a new one, they don't even select parts that operate at the voltages they need lmao.
On QC specifically in gamepads & periphs. It tilts the everloving shit out of me too. Every xbox one controller has some flaw with the bumpers AND they have the audacity to use ALPS sticks too, shitty engineering only harms the customer.
All 3 manufacturers deserve to be shat on for using ALPS sticks and ALPS deserve shit for being low quality parts.

I'd say it hasn't been that long since we still had hall effect in the 7th gen but yeah the last 10-15 years have been a regression for hardware.

Not really. Steam was the beginning of the end because it was an early proof that digital only purchases would be eaten up by the ignorant masses. Alongside iTunes, but people used stuff like Napster/Limewire/torrents to grab music for free. Steam is a game library as a service that enticed gamers to purchase with low costs/free games, and used money and promises to get devs to put games on steam. Steam has piracy, but the past twenty or so years has conditioned most older PC gamers to happily accept being Steamcucked, and younger generations tend to already have the mindset that ethereal, DRM locked media purchases are fine, normal and acceptable.

Finally beat Mother 1 on my Retroid 2S after many years of putting it off. Just one of those games I'd pick up and sorta give up on halfway through.

Finally stuck through to the end this time though and was worth it. You can really tell it was made towards the end of the NES, there's times where the presentation feels almost SNES like.

I'm honestly just happy that I've discovered the handheld scene. For some reason it's a lot easier to get into these games when you have something dedicated solely to emulators, even if it's not as powerful an emulator as my PC.

>younger generations
sis, you are the younger generation with your RP.
I know Valve didn't bother selling 3rd part until we nearly entered 7th gen but nah we were already dealing with DRM, fuck securom was at its peak when Valve started allowing devs to sell steam licenses in retail stores & online.
RPing like without Valve we'd all be going down to Electronics Boutique to pickup our copies of cyberjunk 2041 on a Friday and buying a used copy on Wednesday is kinda weird 'cause we saw how PC gaming sales were treated before 2005-2008.
The used PC game market was going without them intervening and additionally DRM was already doing that too. At the time period you're talking about we had Securom and MS wanted GFWL to take off but we already had DRM, CD key checking etc. It was that CD key checking that was preventing stores from selling used PC games before the Valve/Steam tied to a service account deal that developed later. Never mind selling PC games, they were also commonly exempt from being returned.

Physical media would have left us whether Apple/Valve opened their stores. The internet was changing, games were changing, expansion packs changed to DLC, we patched more and post game support wasn't just down to Valve.
Stores were already dropping PC games but that shift was inevitable, aside from the PC market at the time shrinking and the daily "PC doomed" articles we had to read, we were already pirating online too.
It was coming next gen whether you like it or not. Seethe at valve all you want, we had DRM and it sucked, it still sucks, it would have continued to suck past securom.
And yeah, users should be able to resell licenses; the RP shit is unnecessary zoomie

Anon, I've sadly had a Steam account for nearly 20 years now. I've watched retail PC games vanish off the shelves while PC games delude themselves that they are some special breed of game player thanks to youtube cunts giving them exaggerated egos and steam freebies/sales/heckin gaben!

Furthermore, Securom and all on-disc DRM was either cracked before, on or shortly after release. I know this because I was a poorfag without a home net connection, and I constantly asked/requested/paid my best friend to DL the newest cracks/DRM removal kits for me to CD-R. Did not matter what game I bought or got my hands on, he could hook me up in a matter of minutes to days at most. Steam apologists claim that Securom was some major scourge, but compared to an always on DRM client that phones home to see if you are allowed to play games? It's a fucking saint in comparison. GFWL was a flop from the get go as well - Halo 2 Vista was the trump card that MS expected would get GFWL to be their Steam and it floundered at best. GFWL was also cracked incredibly quickly to the point that people with limited to no PC knowledge could find a guide/forum post and fix their games. Forums were magical communities of like-minded people that existed before social media cancer and places like Reddit choked them out. Another casualty over the years.

So no, revise history all you want - it was PC gamers who damned -all- games to digital, ethereal hell. Steam was hole in the dam that fucked up the structural integrity, and instead of a Dutch boy you had a bunch of brainless idiots parroting that Steam was the greatest thing mankind had made, thanks to viral marketing and clever sales. This could have been avoided, we could have had a future where optical media was still being sold retail, and not boxes or cards with scratch off codes. Instead we get the global homo future of DRM locked clients, online only streaming services and misery.

in my mind those results are pretty much the same. I feel like the real issue is the D900 has wifi6 and the t820 doesn't. well, that and the cost. yes the screen is nice, but everything else from the controls to the plastic quality to the color selection is far worse than the RP4. there should only be a $10 difference between the two MAX, really should be only $5 more or price matched.

You clearly do not remember CD key registries or no-exe cracks. CD keys were never an actual obstacle, there was always a way around them even for games with online multiplayer. You might not know it, but when Steam began doing early "Put your non-Steam game key in and get the game on Steam!", people were hitting game key sites and mass-copy and pasting keys to get free games. Got Prey that way myself.

The argument is always that GC/PS2 games were made to be played on big televisions. It's still a small screen on a device made to fit in the palm of your hands. So I don't see why 5" or 6" should matter. You're either okay with playing 6th gen games on handheld screens, or you're not.

I'm heading into this rabbit hole. I seem to have more fun getting my old devices to play games rather than actually playing them, but do enjoy it enough that I want a dedicated couch device. Ps2 would be great mostly because I want to play breath of fire dragon quarter and some other games I missed out on. Looking at the higher end handhelds the price point puts me in the why not just buy a steam deck, then its well might as well get a legion go. While those aren't exactly portable they'd work for couch gaming.

Then I look at smaller devices like the miyoo or some of the mid spec anbernics and wonder about ergonomics. Nintendo switch is enjoyable but I can't play for a long time without the satisfye grip so ergonomics is definitely a factor. Anything yall might recommend looking into for edc or couch gaming is appreciated. Seems like most handhelds have at least some dock to tv capabilities.

Decent lookin’ famiclones. You could get maybe $20 each for them. Shame about the performance tho; these cheap chinkhelds can’t even play PS1.

I'm torn between sd oled and odin 2....on one hand, oled. On the other, odin 2 I hear outperforms steam deck with emulation, though deck can play ps3 and Xbox 360 era... I do like the track pad for the deck so I can play my old school dos or 90s pc games when I'm not playing console games. I'm not worried about the size as I'm mainly using it for bed and couch but I would like to sell my switch oled but since yuzu ded I think odin has better games compatability than oled... Can anyone who has both weigh in?

ARM has no Xboxhueg, 360, PS3 and Wii U. 3DS seems crippled too, as these devices should be running shit like monhun fine.

BREAKING NEWS

I'll post a timestamped link when the livestream is over, but jewtuber forthenext said that anbernig told him they are aware of the fucked cardinal snapping on the RG556 and are having their engineers look into a fix. Who knows if anything will actually come of this, but it's good to hear them finally say something about it.
