What’s it like working at TecToy for years just repackaging the same master system and mega drive games, is it comfy? If someone’s been there long term it’s basically been what, 30 years of licensed clone consoles and bootlegs? Does it drive a man mad to hear the streets of rage “AAAAAAA” for that long, probably with baile funk being played earsplittingly loud in the office? Curious if anyone has stories or documentaries on them.

br here.
the whole "omg master system is still popular in Brazil!" is actually a meme. Yes we do have a manufacturer called tectoy who has the license for sega stuff and yes they kept making master systems (as well as mega drive), but master system was never as popular as memes made you believe it was. In actual times when it could have been popular it was vastly overshadowed by famiclones (which can't be calculated in quantities sold for obvious pirate reasons, but believe me, for every kid who had a master, 50 had a famiclone).
Master system was mostly the low cost sega console aunts and grandmas would get when kids asked for "the Sega" (meaning the mega drive, which is what kids wanted in the 90s, not the Master)
By the late 90s/early 00s, chipped playstations were super affordable thanks to very cheap bootleg games, and K62 computers let everyone play games on PC for cheap also thanks to piracy (and cyber cafes with LAN)
Master system was never a real mvp as people were made to believe. Sorry for breaking the illusion of brazil being magical master system land.

I know this is a copypasta, but just to clear it up for anyone who's reading, some of this is true I'll admit, but not all of it. While Famicom clones at the time were quite popular, and the main SEGA system that put them on the map was Genesis, or Mega Drive as we called it here, Master System was popular and had much more market share compared to other regions in the world then.

Of course, Mega Drive was the high end one, and a Famicom clone was cheaper, but Master System titles usually looked pretty great for its hardware and, especially in the 90's, looked almost 16-Bit.

Also, if you talk to any Brazilian who owned one as a kid, it's rare to have them talk about it being bad or them wanting a Mega Drive, they're often full of good memories and loved the thing a lot.

No, Brazil isn't a Master System heaven where everybody owns one, but it had a presence in the late 80's and early 90's, way more than in other markets at least, and yes, TecToy still makes the Master System Evolution with some ROMs built in, it's fine, and I like the look of it, but not many people own it, just enough for it to be worth it for them to keep making it, that's all really.

This. The gimmick that MS was big in Brazil is just american revisionism, people in here were playing famiclones and later on SNES more than any of the sega consoles. As soon as N64 and PSX came to the country, everybody was playing that, nobody cared for Saturn or even the Dreamcast, even though they had official releases while nintendo and sony consoles didn't. After PS2 came out, everyone had a PS2, nobody had a GameCube or a Xbox on the 6th gen.

Fair, as someone who's bought some of TecToy's products in recent years, I imagine it's just some bussiness jobs as they produce very few things, I think their last major original electronic was the Zeebo. It's still common for them to do what the company has done since the SEGA partnership in the 90's, license stuff. I got a 8BitDo M30 in 2023, since it was suddently cheap here, and what was the reason? Well, when I got it, it had the TecToy logo, still produced in China and all, but they've licensed it and are reselling it here while adding their brand to it, it's pretty much what they do.

I believe working at TecToy now's, unless you're one of the people who does more manual work like transporting it and manufacturing the few things they do, is mostly managing their licenses and seeing what would be a good new product to bring over to Brazil under their brain, so it's dull.

Also, on an unrelated note, I never see any of the Mega Drives they made anymore, the Master System Evolution, and Atari Flashback which they also brought over to Brazil, are all I see, I wish the gray Mega Drives were still around, but maybe the market for it was lost since the Genesis Mini.

Genesis mini isn’t being made anymore though right? Or is Tectoy still pumping them out over there

I don't see them anymore either to be fair, I'm not sure what's the deal with TecToy pumping out Master Systems, but not making a new Mega Drive since the early 2010's, and not making any after the hype of the Genesis Mini, which I think they also licensed here, was done, I guess it goes to show that Master System really does have a dedicated fanbase here afterall, as odd as that is.

This is the main issue of the whole narrative. When CDs become available no matter how much cheap console might be, games will be a lot more cheaper on the long run.
