So I had a Genesis as a kid and I loved it greatly. However as an adult I got to say that the SNES has the more varied library that holds up better. This is not to say the Genesis doesn't have great games since it certainly does. I just think the SNES has a greater number of quality games in a greater variety of genres that aged really well comparatively.

Collect the SNES first but emulate both to play their libraries.

As someone who has a $20k+ SNES collection, get both of the mini consoles, hack them and load them up with good games. It’s how I play my games anyway. There are only a few you want to play on original hardware and they are so damn expensive now.

If you’re dead set get the SNES and target getting good cheap games first. You can get a lot and then figure out if you want to get something good and expensive that you’d end up liking, like the chrono triggers, super metroids pocky and Rockies.

None... emulate both of them 1st, look up the more popular titles from your favorite genres that both of their libraries offer and download their ROMs, also download ROMs for stuff you happen to be curious about, play them and then decide on which one to get, that way you'll take your decision with more certainty that it was the right one and that you'll actually play often too.

I personally prefer the Mega Drive, but I'm 100% biased as I grew up with it, my Nintendo console growing up was the NES, and while Nintendo's great, I'm more of a SEGA guy nowadays still.

If you prefer an arcade direction and love NES, I think the Mega Drive's library feels closer to that still, while SNES feels more modern and like a precursor to the PS1 and N64 in general too.

If you're open to everdrives, the cheap as dirt x3 clone on aliexpress gives access to basically 90% of all games put on the console. I recommend upgrading the SD card to a better one but after that you're only missing a couple cartridge games, 32x and cd games. For $20 it's an easy choice if money is a problem. SNES also has affrodable solutions but an sd2snes is recommended because like NES, many games use expansion chips and that'll open that all up to you.

Sega had better action games but super nintendo often had slower paced ones that were more polished. There's nothing quite like Demon's Crest on Genesis as there's nothing quite like Ranger X on Super. If you're more into arcade stuff you might find what Genesis offers to be more impressive. The big titles on there are paced like the best arcade games and will be throwing a new exciting scenario at you every few minutes like Shinobi 3. There are similarly paced games on Super but outside of mostly Natsume games I can't think of too many.

You might use the SNES/Genesis, but almost any game you play on it you'd already be able to play (for free) on your Wii. Meanwhile, there are plenty of N64 games that you couldn't play on any of your current consoles.

Also, in a social setting, people are probably going to be more interested in playing the N64 with its 4 controller ports and great party games than a SNES/Genesis with only 2 ports and less renowned party games.

In the end it's your call, but it's worth considering those points.

I would suggest both. The biggest issue is the market for most Nintendo games (and systems) is out of control right now. I remember being hesitant about buying a used SNES for 40 dollars almost 15 years. Now it's almost a 100 dollars for a lose system. Collecting games for the system is a whole different ball game.

Ignore the emubabies in this thread, OP. Its cool to own original hardware and carts, especially if you've got a CRT to hook them up to.
SNES has a more "timeless" library I think, but I'm really starting to come around to the Genesis's library. Its games are simpler and more arcadey, making it feel more like an extension of the NES if you like those kinds of games. They feel grungier and more metal, reminiscent of a specific time frame (the really early 90s/late 80s) unlike the SNES's previously mentioned timeless feel. Also, the Genesis is cheaper to collect for than anything you'll find on the SNES, as there's still tons of games you can find CIB for decent prices.

The Super Nintendo has deeper games that have more atmospheric, exploratory, and adventurous style, while the Sega Genesis/MD has generally better platformers and ports, as well as really distinctive music and sounds (that I generally love, whether synthy or "farty"). You gotta play both.

The TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine Hucard) is a good system, but doesn't even come close to either of these systems. It's worth emulating, though (especially the Bonk series and many other games). It's CD add-on IS equal to SNES and Gen games, however (try Ys I-IV on it and of course Rondo of Blood, but there are many others, as well).

If you don't have a CRT, get an snes.

The megadrive leaves a lot of garbage on the overscan area, so unless you can configure your screen, it won't be great. If you don't invest on an A/V cable, you will be stuck with an RF out that it's the absolute worst. The composite out is also icnredibly murky.

I had a custom made RGB cable for the megadrive 1, with the audio from the headphone jack routed through the Euroconnector.

>> No.10719692

I prefer the mega drive as real hardware because it already supports RGB on stock hardware. Also an HDMI converter is dirt cheap (get the once from ali express, "retroscaler rgbs upscaler", which is a lagfree RAD2x clone but costs less than 30 and is actually available)
The SEGA is also cheaper in general, with a system selling for less than half as a snes.
And you still get new licenced controllers for it from retrobit which are both cheap and work great.
Also a flash cart for the mega drive tends to be cheaper since it doesnt have to support any enhancement chips like on the snes.
For the rest emulation is a perfect alternative for your other systems,

I grew up on Genesis and I have to agree with this guy.
I don't have a SNES though but I've played many of the popular titles and they do seem to hold up better in general.

However I still find myself booting my Genesis #2 behind GameCube at #1 as far as frequency in my collection.

Honestly go with whichever you feel like you will enjoy most. I grew up on GBC, GBA, NDS, GC, Wii, and Genesis. Those are my staples. N64, SNES, and anything Sony didn't make an appearance in my collection until much later.

Being as objective as I can here, while stating subjective opinions:
I feel like Genesis has better sound and graphics in general, despite having "less" colors than SNES.
I feel like SNES has consistently higher quality games, Genesis has higher peaks but lower valleys, whereas SNES is more level. I think SNES has a better library overall.
I feel like you can get into a working Genesis for cheaper.
I feel like Genesis is generally the technically superior system but not all games make good use of this power.
I feel like most games that are on both Genesis and SNES end up looking and playing better on the Genesis.
