I prefer standalone Sonic 3. S&K drags it down.

Sonic 3's levels are generally better but & Knuckles has Lava Reef Zone, the best level

If I had to choose I'd pick S&K, but S3 still has Angel Island, Hydrocity, and Ice Cap so I can't imagine playing them separately.
