What the fuck happened during 5th gen with licensed anime fighters?
Most of the DBZ, Sailor Moon and Ranma games for SFC/MD are pretty decent, some even pretty good!
Then on PS1 we got a lot of really ugly jank like final bout, ub22, the Sailor Moon game and the Ranma one.

Yeah it had nothing to do with the 3D. Well, the Ranma game is a really shitty 3D fighter and Final Bout as well but both UB22 and Shin Butoden on Saturn suck, and there's no excuse because the previous 2D fighting games on SNES were pretty good. What's more, UB22 and Shin Butoden were both released before Hyper Dimension on SNES, which was pretty great.
It's just weird.

Ranma Battle Renaissance dissapointed me so much, I remember when I first had internet access I looked for Ranma games and outside of the flash one where you undress Female Ranma I found a pic of 3D Ranma fighting with the PS1 logo and I was "holy shit i have to play this" and when I finally did it when I learned how to emulate consoles it was so terrible.
One pro it has is having manga-only ryu kumon and rouge, which is pretty cool honestly.

That's an unpopular opinion. In what way do you think UB22 is better than the fan favorite Super Butoden 2 or the underrated Butoden 3?
I really wish Bandai had made Super Butoden 4, all they needed to do was keep the gameplay intact from Butoden 3, and add all the characters ub22/shin butoden got. Instead, they made gameplay sluggish with weird digitalized sprites instead of traditional pixel art, and removed the characteristic split-screen mechanic from ub22. They brought it back for shin butoden but the gameplay remained subpar and most hilariously, they completely fucked up the split screen aspect by making the stages small as hell.
To this day i'm super confused as to what the hell happened. They had all the elements to make a good Butoden game on 5th gen and it seems like they self-sabotaged themselves. The only decent 5th gen dbz game was Legends.

One of the most egregious one is Gundam Wing Endless Duel for the Super Famicom. Extremely playable, huge combos, fast action, great physics, hit detection, dashes in 4 directions even while mid air, move canceling, you name it.
Then the PSX Gundam fighting games are slow, clunky and more concerned with putting the biggest sprites and spectacles than actually being a good fighting game.

They did away with the Dual Screen and Demo moves, which really break up the flow, and also the game is responsive and has plenty of combos and even some room for experimentation. Graphics are a bit underwhelming but that's honestly the worst of it, I think when people say it's bad they're getting carried away with the lukewarm visuals.

The dual screen provides a unique way of playing with projectiles though, and really fits thw DBZ battles, same as the "demo moves" (which, if you're good at the game, aren't going to be using too often, though).
By removing the split screen, they removed something that characterized these games. And sadly shin butoden implemented in a poor way.
When I played UB22 back in the 90s, Inwasnt bothered by the graphics (innfact, back then, I liked them "wow 3D backgrounds! Wow Big characters that look like the actual show!") I just didn't enjoy the gameplay. Only kept playing because of the big roster.
At least Shin Butoden has the Satan mode.
