You ever just hang around in a retro game and ponder the levels and backgrounds?

Pirate Isle in Skies of Arcadia. I would spend minutes just looking into the empty sky. But there are many other great environments in the game.

I wanted to roll back to Skies of Arcadia now that I can read moon. Evidently the English translation is just completely butchered. Like the translators admitted they didn't even consult the script; they got the "feels" and then just wrote their own dialogue for everything.

Might be true, but:
-No one seemed to care for literal decades, so it was apparently good enough
-I never saw ONE proof for that claim, not even a comparison pic or something like that. (and there are plenty comparisons for other slightly censored aspects of the game)

So until I get my proofs I call bullshit.

In Halo CE and 2 campaigns I'd very frequently stop between fights to just enjoy the views. The remasters will never be able to compete with the sights my eyes saw on my CRT with a regular composite connection

Every level in CE besides Pillar and Maw are like this. Sacred Icon has the most jaw dropping visuals in H2 for me.

>> No.10705580

Not retro, but I was playing black mesa today and just wandered around admiring the facilities pondering how they spent their days there. I used to kinda dislike the remake but it really does do a good job making the whole complex feel more alive.
Like I said, this is not exactly retro but it's just so rare that a game manages to draw me in like this these days. I mean I think the original half life used to be like this for me back then. Maybe that's why this hit me so hard as well.

This is hardly much worse than other games that were translated around the PS1 era. Honestly there were much worse translations at the time. Why single out SoA with that problem. I do agree that that kind of localisation is bad practice, but it was common back then.
Treehouse still does that kind of shit with Fire Emblem and Nintendo doesn't give a fuck.

Standards change over time. Re-writing Arche to be having loud sex dreams about Cless was funny and on-point for the mid 2000's. But at this point, I just want the real Tales of Phantasia, just like this guy wants the real Skies of Arcadia. I want to know what was actually written in the script, not a fast and loose translation by a teenager/young 20's something who wants to let us know how funny their jokes are.

When I got Mario 64 I used to like that he would fall asleep in game of you didn’t move, so I would let him sleep in several places and then sleep myself. It’s something I still do in “safe places” in video games. At first it was the cabin in “Cool Cool Mountain” (just let the penguin slide down and then go to bed) and then when I got to the lower level I found the courtyard and although I couldn’t figure out what the point of it was (I thought maybe the game would end there with Peach and I having cake or some shit) so it was the PERFECT place to sleep because there wasn’t any music and the birds were chirping; it was just really relaxing. And then one day I was off to bed and made my way to the courtyard and see this motherfucker.

I turned off my n64 and went to go sleep on the floor in my grandpa’s room because he always slept with a shotgun on his bed. There were a few video games that made me do that, now that I think about it.

My favourite thing to do in games is explore a world. But having said that, I don't really hang around, I just take it in while I'm playing.

>> No.10707250

I can do this in the context of playing the actual game, however the feeling is lost when you try to carry it over to a thread. Webms and gifs are very lifeless to me, they come off as things for people who like to curate an idea online of how they imagine life is but the effort is always hollow.
