From a technical perspective: Mode 7 is rotating them. That's always how things look when Mode 7 is being heavily exploited. Either the whole scene is one awkward-looking flat image, or the main background is something trivial like a solid color while some smaller thing is busy spinning or pulsating.

From an artistic perspective: They are being obscured by your failure to focus on them as your fourteen-year-old brain becomes overloaded with the dazzling spectacle of something smoothly rotating in a Nintendo game, and therefore have no relevance.

From the perspective of in-world lore: They have been eaten up by Dracula.

Actually the mode 7 uses for the drawbridge is pretty good, as it manages to have both mode 7 for the bridge while keeping mode 1 for the rest.

Castlevania had the WORST soundtrack of any castlevania game...one moment it could be good but the sound designers tried way too hard for "ambient creepy noises" and it just sounded like the game was making fart noises at me.
