but the library is also not particularly big (maybe a few hundred commercial games) so the good games stand out

Improved arcade ports on consoles have always been a thing. Maybe you could even argue Donkey Kong NES is an improvement when it comes to sound?

Soul Calibur is a different game compared to Soul Edge 2. Nothing except sound and some animations was carried over. Soul Edge 2 runs on a psx with double the vram

also in many respects the FM Towns versions are better, due to redbook audio and different controller options (FM Towns had an analog gamepad, idk if it was compatible with X68k)
