The proper way to do this poll is to pick a site that implements Condorcet voting, so that the ones voters recognize as being better than others get the top position, not just "most votes wins".
E.g. imagine if Game A gets 100 votes, and Game B gets 80 votes, and Game C gets 40 votes. In a strawpoll, the ranking would be A > B > C

I agree with you about Doom 2, but it's on there because 1) many people actually don't mind the maps for some reason; 2) lots of people think E2/3 from Doom are boring; 3) people way prefer the larger enemy roster and would rather play on shitty maps with arch-viles and revenants than well-designed maps where the toughest opponent is a Baron; 4) they are probably also including custom WADs, 99% of which are for Doom 2

In no particular order: Klonoa, King's Field 2 and 4, Shadow Tower, Silent Hill, DDP and DDPDFK, Mushi and Futari, FF12 (not retro, but Zodiac Age is kinda better), Street Fighter Alpha 3, Wizardry Alternative + Neo, Quake 3 (CPMA only), Crash Team Racing, F-Zero GX, Suikoden 1 & 2, Mother 1 & 2, Spyro 1 & 2, Resident Evil (original, remake is a substantial downgrade), THPS 2 & 4.

The only game in the top 10 that I can see an argument for is SotN and maybe Super Metroid. Particularly funny inclusions are Star Ocean II as the 13th best game of all time, Donkey Kong Country being on the list at all, Quake 1 being chosen over 2 & 3, SMT 1 & 2 being the only blobbers presumably because they're the only ones anyone here has fucking played, FEAR being on the list at all, and Radiant Silvergun being the only shmup besides Troonhou.

I get that most lists that involve voting end up looking like the one above, because of how ubiquitous the canon is. Still, to say that this basically stock top 100 list is "pretty good" is kind of embarrassing and shallow.

Sure, the lack of single player in Q3 is notable, and the modern competitive scene is notoriously scattered and difficult to get into. Still, Q3 is a substantially better multiplayer experience than Q1 and, unless you're speedrunning, that's where the longterm value is. All of them are pretty great, however, and I'd rather see Quake 1 than no Quake at all on these lists.

I know ME 2 and 3 aren't very impressive TPSers, still gameplay is actually fun this time. ME 1 had terrible gameplay, and I can't look past it.
None of the characters had much personality, all they did was give you information about the universe, only exception being Ashley, who isn't a popular character. Problem is, none of it feel very personal. Reapers story was better than second game's story. I agree main storyline doesn't connect to an actual story in ME 2. Still missions actually feel like events taking place in the universe of ME in ME 2, not just codex entries.
Ultimately that's what I liked most about ME series. ME series is flawed in general. I think even ME 3 is better than first game. I also think things like armor design improved massively between ME 1 and 2.

While 2 did have more developed characters, as you pointed out, that's because the game IS those characters. I seem to recall about 90% of the length of the game being about acquiring those team members and doing their loyalty missions. Then you just do the one thing you gathered them for and the game ends.
The characters don't really interact with each other much, either, and it makes everything feel self-contained. E.g. for three missions you dive deep into Garrus or whoever, but then for the next 21+ missions Garrus is irrelevant and just walks around the ship. Repeat with each one in turn. At least in ME1 it felt like the Normandy was a unit, with characters being involved in the narrative from start to finish.
Where I disagree is that ME2 was "actually fun". It was better than ME1's shockingly poor gameplay, but I wouldn't intentionally play it over any other TPS. I have access to, even ones people like to rag on like Spec Ops: The Line. IMO:

As for Tomino, while I love his story telling in general, it always was very flawed. I say this as someone who thinks there are many great symbolism hidden in Victory Gundam.
Why even put Nier onto pedestal like that? Nier Automata has good gameplay. There are games with bad gameplay in that list.

Yeah gathering a team for a "suicide mission" was the stupidest thing, when you realize it wasn't anything special. It's like game wasn't finished. Ultimately those character missions are what I like most about the ME.

The gameplay in the game is LITERALLY """balanced""" around chain dodging attacks with infinite invincibility frames. It's fundamentally broken and stupid. They didn't bother balancing the difficulties. You either crush everything easily or everything kills you in one hit. None of the hundreds of weapons matter. The chip system is just completely broken. The healing system is stupid and badly balanced. Everything about the game has 0 polish and it's like they didn't even test it or make any attempt to balance anything. I'm not sure I've ever played a game that cared LESS about its gameplay balance.

To be fair all lists like this should be alphabetical. I think lists like this has to be very boring in general. You have to add some game from every genre and artificially limit accepted games from every genre. It doesn't matter whether one prefers JRPGs or WRPGs, both should have equal number of games. Maybe number can be favored towards one side if you can find different kinds of sub-genres from that genre. That wouldn't mean that genre is better, it just has more variety.
Citizen Kane is a great movie. People hate it because they expect it to be greatest movie of all time when they watch it. Can any movie even fill such a role? If you try to rank stuff it'll always lead to this outcome. Your favorite game doesn't have to be objectively the best game of all time.

I remember playing Minecraft during the alpha, and being crushed by where he was going with it. I felt sure he was going to keep to the roots and create the ultimate 3D multiplayer RPG with crafting and destructability, like the Dwarf Fortress equivalent of Space Station 13.
But instead he just wanted to make different colors of bedsheets and a dozen vegetables to eat. I thought the project was an utter disappointment, and was stunned to hear quite some time later that it had taken the normiesphere by storm. Very alienating experience.

Same, I also appreciate when someone shitpost replies to my post and both get deleted. Or on the other side I see a post that seems serious and I reply but then that post gets deleted and mine with it to hide any evidence it existed. There was a semi low quality thread that I believe was set to not bump a few weeks ago. I saw about 3 posts and the thread never bumped. 2 of them were questioning if the thread wasn't bumping anymore, 1 was deleted for some reason, then there was a reply and it was back at page 1. I think it stayed on page 7 or 8 for those posts. I remember on some slow boards years back that old threads would be targeted for deletion and they'd no longer be bumped as they moved towards page 10 even if they didn't hit bump limit. The staff is going about things in a weird way, seems like they ignore some rule violating posts and then delete posts they don't like that aren't violating rules.

Top 1000 list is stupid though, let's see a top 500. Excluding even 6th gen you'd have at least 10000 games to choose from.

As much as I hate this, sometimes the mob can be right.

Some sort of synthetic measurement would be 'best'. Rough outline could be to remove (or combine) duplicates of things like sports series. Possibly allow for nested rankings within those series. Additionally because this is retro gaming, I think we could avoid the botting/contrarian issue by having a list that is combined with the last created list year after year. By doing this, we may be able to lessen the impact of bad actors.

I recall a thread here on /vr/ once where the way to choose titles for the list was simply getting 5 (You)s and, while a terrible metric if you want to do something objective, and avoid people voting multiple times, we got a pretty "alternative" list I think, I might have it saved somewhere, though I don't know if I saved it or not, anyways I liked it as it was a change of pace, we should do it again.
