In your personal experience, which game was the most overrated or overhyped for the PS1?
Whether it's from that time period as it happened, or in retrospect looking back as an adult. Just keep it chill, no need to insult others since everyone has their own choices. I'll start:
Symphony of the Night. The Castlevania games have always been convoluted & needlessly difficult for me (not sure if it's super easy for others & something just doesn't click for me with these games) but always heard of how good it was. SOTN is your typical 'Vania experience. Very hard, can't progress further than a few levels, and I'd just bored of the weird jumping mechanics & awkward enemy placements. Great music & art style? Sure. Gameplay? Very offputting. Anyway, yeah let me hear your own 'overrated' ps1 picks.

Final Fantasy 7, suddenly I found myself surrounded in the gaming store by kids who were proclaiming that it was the BEST game ever.
so I asked them if they ever played the previous ones, and they just gave me this "huh?" look.
you tell a kid that a turd with a flag in it is gold and they'll proclaim it as such.

Crash Bandicoot. Super Mario 64 was not revolutionary because of its graphics, but because it was the first time when you could go anywhere you wanted in a Mario game. Crash is the complete antithesis, it's just a side-scrolling 2D platformer with the added dimension. You have no real freedom of movement, the only way is forward. This game also often gets called technically impressive, but in my opinion it's really not. Spyro is technically impressive because it's a 3D platformer where I can go anywhere I want, just like in Super Mario 64, but it runs still runs on a much weaker system that is PS1. Crash is just okay both from gameplay and technical perspective. It's not the worst PS1 game, but it is certainly one of the most overrated.

I've never actually been disappointed by a PS1 game like I have with other "overrated" games. There's nothing on there that's as big of a let down as the banjo games on n64, bioshock infinite or botw. I think the thing I've seen the most is people aggressively underrating games on the console, expressing utter hatred for some enjoyable games with plenty of redeeming factors. Seeing how violently angry people get over Mega Man X5 and X6, even MM8 was really weird to me. It seems they were all blowing some difficult elements or nags way out of proportion.

I think people have a tendency to speak in extreme hyperbole about everything non-nintendo. Nothing can be just good or flawed, it must all be the worst thing to ever happen. It's a little played out, don't you think?

Anon. SOTN is a massive departure from Castlevania mechanics.
I also don't know how in the name of christ you find Castlevania games convoluted, you have a whip button and a jump button. What the fuck is "normal" to you then?

action is too spaced out in mario 64 and world, they're very slow games that dole out content for you at a very slow pace. Crash has you doing much more in a minute of gameplay than mario, making it more involving and challenging.

yeah maybe in the first stage, but both marios get pretty challenging the further you get into them. And you're not just jumping pits and collecting apples the entire game

>> No.10687518

>>10687181
Marios games never get any tighter with their challenges, they seemed to be unable to achieve this due to the way things like the camera behaves. It always had to keep its distance to give you a more comfortable view of the action which meant spacing apart obstacles and threats. It's just how the game is designed.

>> No.10688030

>>10687518
it's like you're taking the bad things about crash and applying them to mario. Crash is just running in a straight line for 95% of the game jumping over holes, so the challenges never change, due to the fixed camera. The camera in Mario 64 is totally 3D, you can pretty much adjust it to look just like crash if you want, because it's a 3D camera, that's how the game is designed

It's almost like you're deliberately not understanding what is being said. Crash has more actions per moment than Mario. It's a higher intensity game. That's all.

Thank you! All those wack jrpgs that took forever to get going is a waste of time. Action, action, action is what games are all about. Maybe some brief cutscenes or story points here & there but don't bog down a game with filler text or nonsense narratives.

>>10685285
The entire crash series. Spyro is a better Mario approximation and you've got MML for your pseudo RPG adventure game ala OoT, but Crash was sort of thrust into the position of competing directly with sm64 due to being the PSX launch mascot and console war faggotry of the time and the games aren't remotely comparable. Easily the most overrated PSX title
