Severed Chains, the PC port project for Legend of Dragoon recently hit it's next milestone, having the game run at 60FPS and at 4K and with updated textures.

These games are not made for these resolutions. It only exposes the flaws.
It's cool that it got decompiled though.

... what wobble? This isn't even emulated, it's a PC port of decompiled code. There is no wobble to fix because it's rendering natively on a PC's GPU which won't have any of the wobbling or warping a PS1 was known for in the first place.

Such an average game filled with every trope of character imaginable, with a cool battle system mired by imbalance and with some of the worst voice acting in history.

And still there are gems that make me remember it fondly. Of those I'll mention the song "If you still remember" which to this day make me nostalgic as fuck. It's one of my favorite video game songs if for anything then for evoking that feeling jnside of me when I was still young and moderately happy.

It's okay. It's not quite good enough to be an actual hit of the time. It's bland and completely generic from a storyline standpoint. But it's weirdly very playable. The timed attack presses were actually new in RPGs at the time and it's even still moderately enjoyable today. The music is actually quite good at many parts. It had good graphics for the time. It's a 7/10 game of the era that still manages to kinda punch above its weight.

People who say this have no idea what the fucking story is about at all, and I doubt they ever played it. The story is the least generic and most off the wall shit bonkers on the PS1.

>> No.10678574

>>10678521
I did, in fact, play it. It's all fuzzy now because it's been fucking 25 years damn near, but I don't recall anything that crazy. A lot of it was super generic and predictable. Like I remember meeting the green dude's family on disc 1, and then he dies and gets replaced with his clone. The main character is super generic. He has a super generic childhood friend female character. Super generic story about fighting an empire. I remember there's some kind of fairly difficult boss fight right at the end of one of the discs against an emperor or king or something. I dunno. From memory it's just this generic topple the empire bullshit but I forget if anything unique even happens later. Nothing in the game stands out as that memorable to me.

with a native pc port all FMVs can be compressed with h264 or even h265 and probably drop the file size down to under 200mb

Because more efficient compression algorithms crop up over time. They allow you to compress something better at the same or even better quality. Even if these formats were available at the time the hardware of the consoles might not have been capable of playing it back in realtime.

Opus for example results in both smaller file sizes but also higher quality audio than MP3, it also requires more processing power than MP3 to play back, and since Opus is 11 years old while MP3 is 32 far less devices, especially older ones, support it.

So h264 would have been completely nonsensical for a PS1 game, but makes sense for a modern PC port of the same game. A lot of video files of older games that are now on GoG or Steam have actually done exactly that. Far easier to use a standard modern codec like that then try to get ancient poor quality codecs working on a modern PC.

Left is the ripped .STR file uncompressed.
Right is the encoded .STR file encoded with the following settings

ffmpeg -i "test.avi" -c:a aac -b:a 384k -c:v h264_nvenc -profile:v high -preset slow -pix_fmt yuv420p -rc constqp -no-scenecut 1 -qp 18 "test_encoded.mp4"

the encoded video is only 5MB, the original is 46MB

Yeah, left looks much better.
I'm not sure lossy compression is a good idea at this point regarding retro games.
I guess an option could be nice for those who are interested. How many TB does CHD PS1 collection takes?

I can, but I enjoy subtle differences regarding encoding. This also is a terrible case for compression. Just look at the edges. That's going to be obvious on a video like this, and I think using AA actually hurts video quality in cases like this.
Codecs aren't designed for PS1 90s animations. They don't produce good results.

Another thing is if this was a game you play over and over again it can be acceptable. You skip cuscenes in DMC after first few times. Vanquish is like 25GB and 20 GB of it is like video.
Do you really skip cutscenes in an RPG?

If you're interested in lowering filesize it might be a better idea to experiment with AV1, or wait for h266.
