>decide to play famicom version of 2 just for fun
>figure out you can level up attack power all the way before other stats and mog the entire game
>extra life every time you try to level up attack past 8
> game is fun as fuck this way
>playing on mister with no save states and make it 80% of the way through the game with no game over
>most fun I’ve ever had playing a Zelda game

Did we get robbed of the most kino Zelda experience possible cartridgebros?

Stats will revert to lowest level when game over though.
But yes, its fun indeed

>> No.10671903

you can mod the NES one to do that too.

Yeah I was terrified but it made the moments when I beat a boss with 1% health no extra lives cool as fuck. I eventually started leveling up magic and health as well and played through most of the game without a game over on my first attempt. Also you can downward strike a bunch of enemies you can’t in NES version, it rules

I'll try it next time I replay the game

I first played the FDS version of Zelda 2, and while I think the JP experience system makes things crazy fun during a second playthrough where you speed through the whole game, I really was not a fan of it first playthrough. When you choose to leave the game and save, the game basically treats it like a game over, and in this version getting a game over means all your stats falling to the level of your lowest one. What this means is that if you want to take your time with the game and play in small sessions, you have to make sure to grind up all your levels to be at the same point every time you're done playing, otherwise you'll lose a bunch of progress. I particularly hate this because otherwise I'd say experience points in this game are very well spread in a way that just exploring the map and dungeons should give you enough to get by. Now I get this is more than anything a save-system issue, but that's a hardware limitation they should've built the leveling-system around. Again, won't deny that it's fucking awesome on later playthroughs, but I do wish it could be enjoyable without having to pick the high-risk/reward option.

I really wonder why they did that, is there really not enough space on the stupid disk to save 3 fucking bytes? I find that hard to believe. Not to mention that actually, the max level being 8, there being only 3 stats, everything could fit in a single byte.

Yeah, maybe I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt by assuming it's a hardware thing, but I also find it hard to believe they fucked the game up like that for no fucking reason. I'd get trying to keep the save data slim if they were using passwords or something, but I've got no clue what the case is here.

I assume its by design as the extra storage needed is a non issue really

Without the level reset you could just easily pump links attack up gradually through a few game overs and then easily farm XP to pump the other 2 stats up making most of the game trivial. I appreciate the responses here but this just seems like an obviously smart game design choice. Also all the excitement from this play through has been due to the tension of knowing I would lose all my attack levels with a game over. Also the game can pretty much be played the same way as the NES version if you want to play it safe and keep all stats level

From todays after work playthrough, I’m not even that good at this game but if you are careful you can start racking up xtra lives pretty easily because you basically one shot everything. Managed to get up to 7 before some bad luck fall deaths.

I always thought it'd be cool if someone made a hack of Zelda II FDS that backported some of the improvements from the NES version. I'm a bit surprised no one's done it.
