It kills me that we have PROVEN great options that don't need active cooling like the T610, T618, and G99... but no, they feel the need to shit out endless rk3566 handhelds in particular.

NGL, I kinda regret buying the RP2S. The sticks and triggers are nice, but the screen is WAY too small, and I never play anything outside of SNES and GBA anyways, both of which the RGB30 does better with perfect integer scaling and 8:7 AR, respectively, so the T610 is way overkill. And that’s ignoring how that square screen made me fall in love with GBC, after the faintest memories of playing my uncle’s Pokemon Silver on my GBA SP back in middle school. Pretty much the only thing it does better is the sleep function, which is basically saying the best part of the machine is when I need to stop playing it.

gogamegeek has the RG 556 selling for $170 SHIPPED with coupon PB44. Only around ~$5 more than the non-pro RP4 shipped, which I think is okay given this has the better screen while RP4 has way better controls and (imo) colors. Honestly, I feel like they should be the exact same price, but this is close enough. Much more reasonable than the $190 shipped that Anbernic is doing atm, soon to be $200 shipped.

I mostly use my RGHXX H for Arcade-Genesis-SNES-GBA but I do occasionally hook it up to the TV for PSX games, though playing Spyro or Crash on the small screen isn't so bad.

I have an RGB30 as well but I pretty much never use it anymore. The screen is great but the rest of the device is so shit and the lesser portability means it sits on the shelf way more often than my XX H does.

I nearly bought he RP2S over the H since it is slightly more powerful but decided not to and I don't regret it. I like the idea of forward-facing speakers on it but it looked too ugly to me.

@RGB30 shill:
Sleep function is important. Being able to pause a game at anytime is invaluable on chinkshit.
You got shittier dpad, enjoy your bleeding thumbs.
It's not integer scaling.
A slightly wider than tall aspect ratio is preferred for gba.

The RP2S does have a tiny screen though. We gotta get away from this era of small screens.

I still don't get how people say 3.5" is too small. It's bigger than pretty much every 4:3-esque screen on any "real" handheld. Hell, 3.5" was the biggest screen nintendo handhelds ever came with (not counting XL models)

If you're trying to play modern games or something fair enough, but if you're struggling to see anything on a retro game on a 3.5" screen your eyes are just shit

For me the KTR1's screen is perfect. 4.5 in, 1080p, 3:2 to be a nice middleground between 4:3 and wide content, but also still small enough to make the handheld pocketable. If only it was on a good high quality handheld instead of an amateur 1 man project.

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy

>What to know about brands
Retroid: Well built, powerful, but expensive (100$+)

Google: cdromance, tiny best set

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 200$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX, PSX with extras, 5th gen + Dreamcast plus some PS2/GC, PS2/GC capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Anbernic RG405M (150$, horizontal, 4" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android)

>A massive leap backwards in terms of screen ghosting
RP3/3+/Flop screen has the same ghosting and no one even noticed until recently. I had an RP3+ and thought I noticed the ghosting when I had it, but it was still a far better screen than most other handheld screens that didn't have the ghosting, so take that for what it's worth.
>screen discoloration, faulty triggers
Already fixed. Well, the triggers anyways. I've seen that FF7 pic where the colors look worse on the RP4, but every other pic or video comparison I've seen had the RP4 with better colors. Not sure what the cause of the disparity is.
>overly noisy fan that occasionally stops working,
Anything it needs the fan for is stuff the RP3+ couldn't run to begin with. I've also only heard of two people having issues with the fan stopping so far, which sucks for them but it isn't indicative of a widespread issue yet. If there have been more cases since then fair enough.
>and incredibly short battery life
It has better battery life than the 3+, it only eats shit with 1h45m for high end PS2 the RP3+ couldn't couldn't run to begin with because of the fan kicking into overdrive. On a game-per-game basis (as in games the RP3+ could run at fullspeed) it gets better battery life due to the more power efficient chip and bigger battery, topping out at just under 13 hours vs just under 11 for the RP3+. It's only when you need the fan that it starts chewing through battery.

I was here to check in before purchasing a console but I have dabbled in buying things from aliexpress in the past year again.
I have a brand of shoes that disappeared from EU but are still there on ali rebranded, buying from NA has a $30 USD modifier + TAX/VAT from Amazon but are on ali for the same price as they used to be, shipped by ali's choice shit? No tax.
Motherboards? No tax. Waterblock? Choice? No tax. Waterblock shipped direct from seller? Took forever and got bollocked.

It's not a surefire thing but stuff that goes through the choice program has been safe for me so far, seems about as safe a gamble as buying from a good EU grey market seller without the need to heavily curate them.

Interfacing with this post has hurt my brain and my ego. I look at the buttons and I'm not sure I can get behind committing an offense just to play FFII on this without someone dedicating 3 minutes to the contra dpad wiggle test and 1 solid minute of clicking the buttons and complaining about how loud they are. I usually have to watch those at 3x speed instead of the regular 1.5x when I reach them but nah I now see the error of my ways and the value as a celly could get mighty offended on these meme shield bash runs if it keeps them up at night and is that worth losing my life over?

If I want to get my meme runs of FFII down in jail, I'm going to have to scale up my crime I spend the rest of my sentence alone but not so great it gets me the death penalty.

So that device I sprung for yesterday was an R36S. I wanted to get a dedicated handheld and something with a non 16:9 ratio for older stuff so hopefully it should fill that niche well.
My main concern after going back to retroarch on the 3DS is how awful things were regarding scaling or shaders. Something that's never been present for me on Windows etc.

So how is the retroarch/arkos implementation on the mid/entry level clone tier devices? Fully fledged with shaders and stuff or have I made a financial error and will regret my decision eternally being bugged by bad scaling?

zamn, I'm doomed

Thanks for the example. I'll just have to wait and see and make do with what works and maybe try modifying shaders for 640x480 like I had to with some for 4k compat.
I'm not usually one to stray away from integer scaling since I'm extremely sensitive to small text geom issues. Usually a grid and screen being high res enough can clear that up a bit to mask it at the expense of blurring but it did just not look good on the 3ds.

I managed to fire up RA on windows again and applied a random slang filter with odd scaling and it didn't look too bad. Maybe the small display will clean it up a bit more.

They're pretty shit, but they might be worth a punt soon.
They use slow RAM so games have slowdowns, require patching ROMs with shitty ancient client software on your PC, and only support 2GB or less SD cards.
Someone me is working on a custom firmware for these carts that fixes most of these problems, but it's not ready yet. In any case, it's impossible to fix all the slowdowns with a software update.

Every time I'm forced to interact with flash storage nowadays I seethe at the good old days of 512MB cards and 1GB CF cards.
As the market is flooded with low quality trash micro SD that's fake, dodgy or will corrupt in a heartbeat (hey sandisk! PNY!). It's all so fucking tiresome.
It was bearable up until the days of 8GB > 16GB microSD and then the market just fucking imploded and expanded in a flash with fake shit everywhere. I'm lucky that I got a stash of good fujifilm 2GB cards stashed away for an old premium CCD camera because fuck trying to buy a genuine, quality, fast 2GB card in this era.

I hate it, take me fucking back. I don't care if I lose the modern PMP experience. I'll go back to my 1GB highly curated chinkmp3 player but I can't take any more flash memory woes of the modern era REEEEEEE

Like the other anon said, depends on the distance and your eyesight.
200-300 PPI is okay for arm's length but it's not super hi density, you really want to go into the 5-800 range but good luck bozo.
Seeing pixels isn't the issue. The DSi XL is a stunning 76 PPI and looks fantastic! Just like the old days of flat screen monitors, good ol' TFT some primo 72 DPI action! It's low quality screens and shitty pixel layouts that spoil everyone's day.

I would more call them SNES gray, black, Mario Red, lime green, and turquoise.
I am surprised they never made more colours as originally it was just the SNES gray and the other four were added weeks after each other.
It's weird, because originally the blue camo sticker was only available with SNES gray and lime green models, but the colours really really make it look like it was intended for the turquoise one... or perhaps they made the turquoise one to match the camo sticker. Who knows.

A smartphone like this, I would want to be more shaped like one of the simple Java/four years behind Android based LG phones (pic related), but the fact it can run Smash 4 how it does for only $160...
And this isn't $160 for a chinkheld, it's $160 for a fully functional smart phone that can emulate consoles better than $150 chinkhelds can. Still accepted by modern service providers. This shit is cuh-razy.

My GOD
I am so upset with the direction smart phones went with.
It should have literally been nothing more than numbers go brrrrrr/making cameras, storage, and read speeds higher and bigger, keeping modular batteries that the consumer can easily replace themselves, and then having unique models with FUNCTIONAL gimmicks like the projector screen built in or the slider keyboards/number pads.
But noooooOOOOooooooo
We gotta remove all the buttons but then add new buttons for Bixby/Cortana/Siri/AI shit invading and always listening in to you or buttons with inaccurate fingerprint recognition even after the initial setup asked you to touch the button fifteen times to recognize your fingerprint and still doesn't recognize it accurately during regular use. Literally the only prior institutions that wanted finger prints in human history were the government and law enforcement to catalog your biometrics. Not once, ever, has my Galaxy Z Flip5's power button accurately read my finger print since getting it and re-registering it three fucking times with each attempt asking me to touch the power button normally fifteen fucking times.
I feel like this is becoming a rhyme, lyrics for some stage play about how lame modern smart phone tech had become today.
Enough bars tho, fuck Samsung, Apple too, I wanna go back when phones were cool.

PSP Go
Bought it recently because you can pair a PS3 controller to it, I plan to do that later down the line and use component cables to do some direct capture gameplay footage. Replaced the screen, shell, and screen, and installed an internal micro sd card adapter with a 128GB card. Turned out pretty well, the L and R buttons are a little too soft for my preference but the control deck is a lot more manageable than I originally thought it'd be. The analog stick is definitely in a much better position here, I comfortably get at it compared to my PSP 3000, but the recessed d-pad and face buttons are going to take some time to get used to.
And in case you want to beat my time, that's Roo's Tubes. Not a PB, but it's a decent record given that I played it using the PSP Go's controls.

Regardless, I'm of the opinion that a device doesn't have true, full GBA emulation unless it also allows for GameCube emulation and the unlocking/connecting of GBA/GCN content. Which as far as I'm aware, only original hardware allows for it.
Again, I do not care if your emulator lets you tick a box or flip a switch to turn on the content. I want the specific experience of being able to connect and unlock shit with a real, physical GBA even if it's using a flash cart. Anything short of that is not true GBA emulation.

Not just a whole extra console, a whole extra console and 3 entire cables that were hard to find because nintendo never produced any gamecube accessories in quantity and they weren't stocked anywhere so you had to order an entire extra three cables to play with your friends, on top of them having the consoles!

Yeah, it's a great game but the cost to play it exceeds the costs of some paid battlepasses if you were to skip every level.

psp has homebrew that makes that sleep switch miles better, called hold+
Hold+ is the ultimate companion to the PSP's music player. It adds useful features and gives you TWICE the battery life when used properly.
It does the following when the Hold switch is enabled:
* Switches off the LCD screen and backlight.
* Underclocks the CPU to 60MHz
* Fixes malfunctioning Hold switch
* The original screen brightness and clock speed are restored only when the Hold switch is released fully to the power off position
* Prevents the PSP from going into suspend mode if you accidently push the power switch too far when turning off Hold mode.
* Turns off LEDs in hold mode.
* While in hold mode, allows the use of Left, Right, LTrigger, RTrigger, Volume and Start buttons, if you hold the Select button first. Useful to skip songs, pause etc.
Additional Features:
* Enables the 5th brightness level on PSP Slim.
* Increases the vertical scrolling speed of Music player by around 50% (scroll 300 songs in 10 seconds).
Usage:
Turn on the Hold switch to automatically disable the display and underclock the CPU. Release the Hold switch fully to the power off position to return the CPU to normal speed and enable the display.

Because hinges are such a fucking nightmare to design. It's not as simple as the top and bottom halves being form factor with eachother while not applying any pressure to any of the inputs/screen, it's balancing the weight and strength of it so it's neither top heavy or imbalanced, it's designing mechanisms to click the screen into place that won't just snap or wear off with basic used, it's finding a way to feed the screen's ribbon cable through the hinge without it getting pinched, etc etc etc. Nintendo made the SP a sturdy mother fucker except for its shoulder buttons, but every hinged device since has has problems even if they weren't as bad as the DSlite's hinge issues specifically.

It really comes down to the seller, you need to see what type of shipping they offer when checking out your digital cart. All "Choice" sellers will ship your order within 24 hours and you'll receive it within 1-2 weeks. But a lot of the sketchier sellers, if they ship your product at all after ordering it 4-6 days ago, will fuck up your mailing address and loose tracking the moment it leaves China never to be seen or heard of from ever again. In which case Aliexpress is usually very quick to refund you instantly a credit, or a three day refund to your debit/credit card, but recently I had an issue where some fuckwad seller claiming to sell gold and red GameBoy & Watch Minis (Yugioh themed) for $4 claimed to have sent my order back at the end of November. I filed a complaint at the beginning of January when it never arrived and they dragged me and Aliexpress for four fucking weeks over it before the protection time ran out and Aliexpress defaulted to just giving me my money back. With the refund I was able to order it again through another seller for a $0.30 additional cost, but I am really fucking pissed and burnt out over how long this all fucking took. I ordered it in November, only got a solution in February.

All DSi models, including the XLs, have either severe ghosting, yellowing, or bright blue-light issues. It's an issue with ALL DSi and DSlite models as Nintendo juggled the cheapest screens available. Amazes me how butt-fucked loyal people are to Nintendo thinking they're about "quality" when they have always tried to work with the cheapest components they could find since the GameCube was a massive cost sink for them.

>> No.10681940 [DELETED]

Out of the entire "DS" family line, the only worthwhile handhelds are the original phat NDS before the DSlite, the new 3DS, the new 3DS XL, the 2DS (as cheesy as it is), and the new 2DS XL. Every single other DS unit has severe issues one way or another, if not several, with the DSlite and the launch 3DS unit design being the worst of the worst.

You really do not appreciate how much the staple PlayStation d-pad basic design and the four face buttons are an entire product branding for the PlayStation ecosystem. Did you know most McDonald's locations that used a "platinum"/"silver" M logo instead of the typical yellow "gold" one failed and shut down nation-wide after three years of trying to force it?
Branding matters. PlayStation's d-pad and face buttons with their little cross/fork, square, triangle, and circle buttons (the cross is NOT an "ecks" button) are one of their biggest signatures for the brand. Changing them in any way, even just making them the same colour as the unit/controller itself, has branding consequences you do not appreciate.

Well, I hear the plastic scratches easily, the screen has no oleophobic coating so if you don't like screen protectors you're fucked, there's the issue where the battery readings go nuts if you let it discharge completely (some come with this issue from factory) so if it happens you have to open it and disconnect the battery to reset it, the d-pad is alrightish, the chip is rather weak especially for the TATE inclination of this design and poor OpenGL support leaves you hanging on a few shaders.

The problem is RK3566 chinkhelds just have several issues from poor drivers, the battery metrics being marginally off and going nuts if completely discharged, very poor idle power management and no sleep being some of them. Shouldn't be an issue with that on turing cards or above.
Probably lumped in and conflated with the other usual excuses desu.
At the point you're outputting to a 15k display it's unlikely to be an issue since the pre-reqs on hardware/adapters should be able to solve it if it was and not to a TV.

I haven't used interlacing recently on a CRT with turing but I did have to use it on a 4k monitor with poor resolution support and it was working fine except for a conflict with gsync or specifically freesync support, only needed to be disabled but that's par for the course with NV's jank toggles for all things gsync or scaling related nowadays.
