TIE-Fighter/X-Wing was MS-DOS based.

I personally enjoyed Lightspeed, which had RPG conversation elements, slight shipbuilding and commerce/trading mechanics and an early 3D space combat engine which would allow you to leave your main ship on autopilot and remotely pilot kamikaze fighters into your enemies.

Alone in the Dark had a pretty immersive setting for MS-DOS gaming, although my favorite was the first Monkey Island.

That said, I feel like Chip's Challenge was the apex of PC gaming even though its windows. Pic Related.

I think ZZT really is one of those games you had to have played back in the day, when it was still widely played. Windows 98 Second Edition.

Or Windows 95 OSR 2.5 without Internet Explorer if you want to set up that mess.

You could use 98lite on the Second Edition Installation and get the same memory footprint as that, though.

I'm planning on using a fairly average laptop. Am I going to run into problems because of the newer hardware and possible lack of drivers?
Sorry if it's a silly question but I was never very good with this stuff. My brother handled most of the technical stuff back when we were still playing DOS games.

>> No.1073491

>>1073485
Oh shit, I thought you meant like an actual retro rig.

You probably will unless you have an older laptop with a Sound Blaster-compatible audio solution and have less than 512MB RAM.

>> No.1073497

>>1073491
I figured as much. I suppose I'll have to stick to Dosbox then. I heard XP can natively emulate DOS, I was hoping to avoid that because it might create issues but XP seems pretty ideal when it comes to older games with newer hardware.

I should do some research about that.

>> No.1073505

>>1073497
Yeah, stick with DOSBox for DOS games.

However, under XP you can get a program called VDMSound which emulates a Sound Blaster 16 sound card and also NOLFB.COM which does some weird VESA/framebuffer/Mode X/grafxidunno shit that makes a lot of DOS games work fairly well under XP.

Also always check to see if there is a source port or patch of your game available. For example, Descent has a Windows port called D2X-XL that works awesome.

For older Windows games, XP is your best bet. However, if you have a multicore CPU or "hyperthreaded" CPU, some games will have speed issues and you will have to set your CPU affinity of that game in Task Manager to only CPU 0. Early Unreal engine games have this problem.

>> No.1073513

>>1073505
At this rate it's starting to look like a good idea to see if the laptop can run Windows 7 and use a VMbox for XP. Either that or find a way to connect my main computer to the VGA monitor but that's not really the issue.

Also regarding Source port, I usually play source port of older FPS games because I often find them a little hard to control in DosBox. Does Blood have a Source port?

Also, thanks for letting me know about D2X-XL, I've been wanting to give Descent a shot for a while.

Maybe you can try this... I´ve downloaded but still not tried it

DOS(Box) Games Bootable CD contains over 190 games for MS-DOS and
over 100 games for Microsoft Windows 3.x. The games can be played
from Windows (tested on Windows XP), Linux (tested on Ubuntu 9.10)
and as the title says, the CD is bootable, which gives you the
ability to play the games in pure MS-DOS mode or from the built-in
Linux distribution (Slax 6.1.2) provided along with the games.

Maybe because the overall resolution is approximately in sync with the texture resolution on that side? That's my reason anyway.

Using "high-quality" hardware and settings gives very sharp edges to the polygons, yet heavily blurs the textures (because they're too low-quality to be rendered smoothly without loads of blur). Sharp-edged shapes with blurry images on their sides look like garbage. They look like crudely designed plastic toys that have been ineptly painted. But if you keep everything grainy and use nearest-neighbor texture filtering, the jaggedness of the images on the sides of things match the jaggedness of the edges of things, and a special thing happens: It actually becomes DIFFICULT to tell a fake edge that's just been hand-drawn into a texture from an edge of a polygon.

For instance, in that Quake comparison shot, the long ledge at lower-right looks like a smooth, painted block, while the long ledge at lower-left looks like every one of its speckles MIGHT be as much a part of the ledge's 3D shape as the long corner-edge of it is.
