The general concept is strong but using amnesia to fill plothole is a fail. This is why ff8 is weak compared to ff7, as ff7 story is fully cohesive despite being a little weird

If you take the game seriously both from a story or gameplay perspective it's a total fucking piece of shit. If you treat it as a sandbox to fuck around and push the game to its limit via strategic early spell storages junctions and blue magic it's fucking fun. And of course doing a card game run is extremely fun.

Still the greatest mini game of any game, ever. Slightly botched by effectively forcing retarded rule introductions against the player but if you're doing a full card then you'll just research how to prevent this anyway. I can't say enough about how brilliant the card game and liquidation mechanics are.

Weakest character lineups in a final fantasy game up to that point. The designs are ok but everyone outside of rinoa and squall are just backdrop and worthless. This is such a contrast compared to ff7, ff6, and ff4 where the side characters have intriguing and emotional plotlines. Ff5 has no plot so doesn't count.

Greatest soundtrack in final fantasy series and in gaming in general. It's the composers greatest work in his history and probably will never be topped in gaming for me. Upon revisit it's shocking how many good songs are in the game .

And yes I support and enjoy the squall is dead theory.

The reason I love FF8 more than almost any other FF is for what it almost achieved rather than what it actually is. I love the setting, the atmosphere, the designs, the characters. Everything is great and exactly what I want in an RPG. The bad parts are the gameplay and some of the key storyline decisions. I understand why people hate it but it's so close to being one of the greatest RPGs of all time to me that I can't hate it that much.

It's a game that, if they made an FF7 style remake and changed the narrative of the game a bit, it would be considered even greater than FF7 imo. Imagine an FF8 with fixed gameplay that improved the junction system to integrate drawing into natural combat progression and they made the story more cohesive and axed the genuinely stupid shit like the amnesia aspect(either that or more fully foreshadowed its existence). Lots of things they could do to make FF8 an amazing title. The pieces are all there, it's just a little off center.
