Some games back then had cool covers, you knew NOTHING about the gameplay or if it's even gonna be halfway decent or fun, so you just get suckered in by its eye-catching cover. For me, it's games like this....Nightmare Creatures, just ominous and dark with some sort of mysterious aura. Like, what kind of depraved shit could be here?

>He doesn't get it

Low IQ med moment.

Here's a good counter example as to what OP Is describing: Mario 64

It pretty much explicitly tells you what the game is gonna be like, doing a callback to Mario 3, one of the biggest games ever released, only this time, it'll be 3D.

There are a couple of PS1 games I can recall with the aesthetic of Nightmare Creatures cover, where you're basically intimidated into buying the game.

Constantly, as a child it was pretty much the main driving force behind my decision until I got older and had playstation underground and later playstation magazine with articles and demo discs to help inform my decision

Maybe in another 30 years you'll have enough imagination power to wonder what's beyond the edges of 3D game worlds. Your hands will still be brown, though.

Yes, many times!
Computer games had big boxes adorned with incredible art - often by highly skilled, well known artists - evoking adventure or mystery, or some fantasy themes I liked. A lot of them were even behind class so you couldn't look at the screenshots on the back without asking!
Some game covers I never bought stuck with me for years in memory. Always thinking 'what if I had gotten that game? What could it have possibly been like?', years before I would have the chance to find out.
A magicial combination of evokative art and limited access. It gave a lot of games that were maybe quite medocre in truth a high level of mystique.

Crash Team Racing. I was a little kid at the time and animated animals doing shenanigans was always fun. I got my brother to buy me this at a gas station for my PS2 in 2006 or 7. I have no idea why they were selling PS1 games in that year, but it was nice. One of the best purchases of my young life, brought me and my siblings some happiness.

Game & Watch Gallery on the GameBoy. I thought it really included four complete Mario games on the cart, as opposed to four mini games. Still, I was pleasantly surprised.

On the other hand, I was disappointed with Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2, because I was expecting something like Tiny Toons and not a puzzle game. I traded that one in as soon as I could for Mega Man X on the SNES. Although turned out to be a pirated copy.

Salamander NES. Never bought the game but I wanted it based on the cover. I didn't even know it was a shooter

You're a retard that doesn't play games, you could see the roots in their games all the way back from their ps1 games and by the ps2 era games like Evergrace and Otogi were already building that foundation, it only continued to refine until Demon's.

There's no way that was based on the sexy 80s movie about kissing aliens who turn people into zombies?!
