Did you ever drop a game as a kid because it was too scary?

Silent hill 1, I was 10 years old and it scared the fucking shit out of me even when nothing was happening. It was the atmosphere and foggy graphics making it feel like there was always something just out of view.

>> No.10636989

Tmnt turtles in time. The intro and the "big Apple 2 am" scared me a lot. I did not touch the game until return and never rented it again.

I only beat the game when I was 25yo, lol

Did you live in the Big Apple and play it at 2am and think your cartridge was haunted?

I dropped Thief: Deadly Shadows once I got into the Cradle. That might have happened 2 times actually, lol. Was a megapussy, I guess.

Cradle is said to be the one of the scariest levels in the entire gaming history, so don't be too harsh to yourself

Sadly I never played any horror games as a kid otherwise that certainly would have been the case. I was frightened by some of the music in Clue for the SNES though.

I guess you can count Disciples II.

I wasn't really afraid of it; I just really disliked the art style and atmosphere. It was so gloomy like they took Heroes 3 and turned it into shitty creepypasta game, devoid of all fun.

Also Gothic but that was because i'm afraid of wasps irl, any game which has fucking hornets or mosquitos for enemies can go into trash

Alone in the Dark 1.
Always stopped before reaching the second floor. But I loved being scared, so I played it often.
Same with Clock Tower on the psx.

oh man this thread was made for me...
ok 1st game that scared the ever living shit of 10-year old me was The Mummy on PC. A movie tie in game thats actually great but the groaning mummies and especially those hammerwielding ones scared me shitless.
2nd game was Return to Castle Wolfenstein also on PC. The 4th and 5th crypt levels were unbeatable for me cause of the sword-wielding zombies. i remember i would load the first crypt level and just stare from that hole at the beginning and snipe the zombies from there but never having the guts to drop down into the foggy room...

>> No.10637701

I didn't drop them but the Tomb Raider games used to scare me a lot, especially the animated Kali statues in 3.

>> No.10637789

>>10636541
NES and Genesis games didn't scare me. Even Splatterhouse II was too awesome to be scary. The first zombie in Resident Evil 1 was so scary I was paralyzed with fear. I would watch zombie movies where the humans overcame the zombies in badass ways to cope with the fear.

>> No.10637797

not a retro one no
horror to me is the one thing that really need the latest bell and whistles to be effective. i love sweet home, its a dope rpg to me, but shit aint scary.
i guess this board considers ps2 retro too which is where i would say games started looking good enough to be scary but ps2 will never be retro to me dammit

When Silent Hill 2 was brand new I had rented it from Blockbuster and decided I was gonna play it at night in the dark. I was already pretty familiar with survival horror games at that point but everything leading up to this exact moment is when I said "yeah I think that's enough game for one night" and turned off my PS2 then quickly booked it upstairs to my room lol.

>> No.10638138

>>10636541
None because as a child I avoided anything even remotely dark or scary.
I was extremely sensititve to horror and would get nightmares for days just by seeing a horror movie commercial. Even the sound of toy guns scared me.
Despite that I always loved Lavender town, it never struck me as a scary location, just a sad and beautiful one.

Yeah. Maniac mansion. I was like five to six years old and knew no english. Watched my cousin play it on the pc, and took the game as a serious thing. So,when he entered the kitchen, and there's blood on the wall (ketchup) and a chainsaw, I took it as very real. Then when there's Edna there who starts chasing you, I fucking freaked out thinking she's some crazy evil bitch that's gonna kill you.

No because no one would allow us to rent or buy any back then

The weird part is my Christian school had book fairs and they sold horror books to kids and no one ever said anything about it. Those books had this stuff and worse in them. We were maybe 5-10. Maybe they didn't know but I don't know how they couldn't when kids are buying them all day everyday

>> No.10638432

Twisted metal black because my brother told me there was a scene of one of the characters head being shoved into a pipe. Years later I looked at all the cutscenes and I'm pretty sure he was lying. But that game already creeped me out for some reason

>> No.10638629

Books never got a rating system so it’s pretty nuts what can be put in them and given to kids without anyone knowing. Of course these days kids go on the internet, so pretty much all media is tame compared to what they can find on here.

I almost didn't beat Halo CE because The Library scared me as a kid. My older brother called me a pussy for not beating it, which made me really mad, so I forced myself to play through the rest of the game.
