Janky Kong 64 was not good, and like many series had a rough transition to 3D.

>> No.10634768

I remember how mediocre this game is

>> No.10634795

saw a DK64 cart today for 320 yen in perfect condition, pretty amusing.

DK64 simply isn't that good, it's fun for the first couple of levels but it quickly gets tedious and overwhelming

>> No.10635457

mini games are one of the best ways to pace a collectathon and that's why the perfect game is tooie with dk's missions

It was a letdown. They should've stuck to Banjo for the N64 and kept the Donkey Kong game for the following gen, but Rare was falling apart by then so it's a moot point.

>>10634765 was not that good, and like many anons had a rough transition to womanhood.

you have to become comfortable not fully completing this game.
people say don't go for 100% but
I mean you should also accept you wont overcome the original Donkey Kong
maybe even Jetpack.
and without that you can't even sweep the regular progression

GUYS PLS HELP DOES THE CHARACTER SWITCHING HACK MAKE THE GAME BETTER OR SHOULD IT BE PLAYED VANILLA? I WANT TO HAVE FUN AND ALSO NOT FEEL LIKE IM CHEATING EVERY TIME I SWITCH CHARACTERS

>> No.10635813

>>10635802
I don't believe you're being sincere. Just because you have the hack on doesn't mean you always have to use it. Apply the hack to the rom, and then see how often you lean on it for yourself.

>> No.10635812

>>10635802
I think the game is broken with that hack. I never tried it, but the game is already very easy as it is, just bloated.

>> No.10635821

>>10635813
I played the game for like 15 cumulative minutes on various emulators over the years. So I'm just curious if the hack kind of fucks the game up since it sounds like you can use it to sweep the game without backtracking. I just beat banjo kazooie so I'm looking ahead at more great games to play

Fuck off back to /v/ you mindless insect. That board is allowed to be a shithole as a containment board for your type, go use it instead of spreading the cancer.

>> No.10635830

I played it for the first time not too long ago and had a pretty good time. Yeah its pretty big but its not like they didn't do anything to make the back tracking and character switching more convenient, theres tons of teleporter pads all over the levels right where you need to go. I was able to 100% the game in about the same amount of time I was able to 100% any of Rares other games.

>> No.10635832

>>10635802
Play it vanilla. Rushing through DK64 won't make it better. Most of the complaints about backtracking for bananas is zoomers repeating what they heard in like 1 specific youtube video. It never bothered me when actually playing the game.

It took me 23 years and 4 attempts to finally finish dk64 (main game, 101% is impossible on emulators) and the last try was with the swap mod. This run took me a week. DK64 is not fun in any way in its vanilla form.

Is there actually a good one? I mean I think Yoshi's Island is pretty good but I also think its collection aspect holds it back substantially. I could say the same about Mario Sunshine I suppose. Does DKC 2 count as a collectathon though? I liked that a lot, since the collection in it was actually interesting and fun. Maybe that's my answer.

No kid back then gave two fucks about it having too much to collect, we just played it and were glad we had a lot of things to do ingame

I bet you're one of the faggots that parrot the shitty opinion that kazooie is better than tooie.
It isn't , tooie is better than kazooie in every single aspect

>> No.10637192

When designed properly, each collectable is it's own adventure. Think how Mario 64 has that particular flow of
enter stage
explore stage a little
identify and complete small challenge
be rewarded

It was literally never about collecting things. It's about the stuff that comes in between, and the sense of accomplishment you get when you pass a challenge.

those later stage Rare platformers, incidentally are about half good, and about half pointless bloat. There is a lot of good content in those games. They just decided to get really obnoxious about gating everything behind character switches and item checks.

>> No.10637196

Also, it's important to note that "collectathons" literally never went away, and remains popular, because modern Zelda is fully just a collectahon.
What happened is animal platformers fell out of vogue, because gamers "le grew up", and decided they only wanted to play GTA3(which is a collectahon).

Does anyone know why I don't have boss battles or anything unlocked? I apparently have enough fairies for it. I'm playing on an Everdrive 64 X7, but I don't think that should make a difference. I go into the one island and the big fairy isn't there so I'm assuming I did all of that.

>> No.10638378

I still love that dopamine high when you've gone through the whole level and you collect the last golden banana just around the same time as collecting the last mini banana and having found the two fairies and all the blueprints and so on. Everything lines up perfectly in those last 30 seconds or so. Non autists wouldn't get it.

Don't listen to the others, it's a great way to play the game, first time or otherwise. You still unlock each of the Kongs as you would normally and it massively cuts down on all the time you would normally waste trying to find a Tag Barrel just so you can collect a single character-specific item. Now you can just switch and grab it immediately without running the risk of forgetting where it is and having to waste more time scouring the entire level just to complete your collection.

I had this as a kid and it got boring over time. I always preferred Banjo Kazooie, and of course, the 2D DKcountry games on SNES. Just because it was 'bigger' doesn't mean it was better. If anything, Conker's Bad Fur Day eclipsed it in quality, gameplay, and fun factor completely. Rare was starting to get hit or miss around that time....Killer Instinct from 94/95 was great, but their sequel Killer Instinct 2/KI Gold for N64 wasn't as good. Banjo was good, but Tooie wasn't as good. It was like a noticeable pattern where some of their later games were a letdown.

I used version 5.0 (the latest version) of this release of the patch for my playthrough last year:

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4961/

That one had you unlocking the Kongs sequentially as you would during a normal, unpatched playthrough, and thus could only select them in the menu once you actually freed them.

Just checked the github: the patch as it is now has two settings: Speed Mode On (for speedrunners, obviously) and Speed Mode Off, the latter being the default setting. In that one, only DK is unlocked from the start and there are no other gameplay changes. Read all the details here:
