What the hell was this? Batman Forever is one of the worst superhero games of all time. Completely confusing controls, it took me 'forever' to figure out how to grapple hook. The other weapons & gadgets you get were difficult to perform. The instruction manual was useless. The soundtrack was repetitive as hell. It was like a really poor PG beat-em-up with Mortal Kombat controls. The game had a "vs" mode but it was always just set in the same boring 'Batcave' simulation area. You can choose enemies from the games as extra fighters (think of an uninspired MK-clone fighting game but with a beat-em-up style). I had to literally experiment & figure out attacks for each fighter since the manual had nothing. Strangely enough, I had a classmate from school who borrowed it (in exchange for Killer Instinct or some shit) and he enjoyed it, and would often ask for it everytime we traded SNES games over the weekend. Anyway, crappy game from a crappy era of Batman flicks.

The Spider-Man beat-em-ups on SNES by far. That sick cover art, the genre, Spider-Man, it was everything I wanted. Then you play it and it fucking sucks and looks like complete shit.
Wolverine on NES is also really bad. You take damage per frame an enemy touches you so your health just drains in a second. Which is kinda funny, but it still sucks to play.

The sad truth is that most comic book games were and are terrible. Out of the three big names: Spidey. Wolverine, and Batman, Batman is the most consistently good one. Spider-Man didn't get a good game until N64/PS1. X-Men not until Gamecube (unless you count the fighting games which are sweet).

What. I thought Maximum Carnage was a solid rental. It's not amazing, but I'd consider it on the higher end of retro superhero games since the vast majority of them are completely unplayable trash. Maximum Carnage is shallow, but decent.

Compare that to actual nearly unplayable dogshit like Spiderman: Arcade's Revenge. Which had the most incredible cover art and soundtrack ever attached to the most unforgiving and shit gameplay out of any of them.

I didn’t like this game and I knew it was bad but I developed a weird fascination with it. I think it was the only new game my rental store got for several weeks and I rented it multiple times.

Mutant Apocalypse is a pretty decent game. There’s also an Avengers Beat’em Up called Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems that uses some of the sprites from the Arcade fighting game but is mostly a kind of sequel to Mutant Apocalypse (they even share a Wolverine with identical sprites and movesets).

Indeed, though he talked about Spider-Man beat 'em ups, in plural, so I think he's considering with Separation Anxiety too, and this one brings both of them down, despite adding the cooperative in its campaign, which Maximum Carnage missed, it also added passwords, which is nice... but it was a lot less fun to play, and more frustrating, maybe he played more SA and thinks MC was identical...

I kinda liked it. I did co-op at a friends house a couple of times. It was shitty, but in a fun way. You could turn Batman into an armored vase also and yes, the controls were hella confusing. It was a mysterious game.

My friend rented this and was super excited because "superman has to be great". I played the multiplayer for like 5 minutes and it seemed like your average boring 5th gen shovelware. Only found out about the infamous rings situation years later.

This.
I think that what upset me the most when I went ahead to play this one... is that I actually liked the 1st and 2nd Spider-Man titles on Game Boy... so I had decent expectation, but for some reason it's like they forgot how to make a video game from one title to the next. Bits Studios ditched the 2nd installment's MetroidVania style, which I liked, to go for a level to level style, which is fine, but the levels are not well designed, nor fun... especially thanks to the controls. I know most people think that Spider-Man controls poorly in all Game Boy titles, but I swear none of them were this awful.

spiderman on the gb color was so hard I couldn't get past the second stage but kid me was content to replay the opening sequence with JJJ and the intro venom boss over and over.
one of the devs in a youtube comment apologized for making the game so hard, said the relentlessly attacking birds specifically were bullshit.

One thing that bothers me about this one is how people only seem to remember the birds who, as annoying as they were, weren't too difficult, they often show up in open areas where you can really just swing past them, but the bats... oh, they're a copy of the birds, a sprite swap, but in the sewer when you're looking for the Lizard and later Doc Ock's hideout, in those tight spaces... they suck.

I still think GBC Spider-Man's quite decent, it's a downgrade when compared to Neversoft's PS1 title, which this is a port of, but that's expected if you take the hardware into account I suppose.

A Spider-Man MetroidVania is certainly a decent concept, and while the execution wasn't perfect, the moody atmosphere and OST, alongside good graphics and decent level desing, makes up for it.

What hurts the most is that the OST was sublime and the controls are very good, if this one had an unlimited lives or continues option then it would really have been good, so close, yet so far too...

I got this game as a kid as a gift and hated it so much I tried to trade it in. I remember I was offered less than 5 bucks store credit even then and the guy at the counter pointed to a stack of them nobody wanted when she objected because she thought that was so low.

Awful

Probably the Spider-Man game (very loosely) based on the 90s cartoon. I could make it to the last level, but when I reached the final segment where you had to insert the keycards, I could never figure out the correct places to use them and so I just kept inserting them blindly. Eventually, the game would warp me to the sewer level and then reset me to the beginning.

I genuinely love that one, I grew up with it, so I'm biased, but if plays fine and as you mentioned the enemies explode when he punches them, which is awesome, also a good SFX to go along with it, great levels for the 1st half of the adventure too, easy to explore, not too linear, nor too cryptic.

You might be talking about this sexy little fighter from '95. It was definitely a bit drabby looking & just another hacky fighter following the fighting game trend/bandwagon of the early-mid 90s. Not much stood out about it...Cheetah looked pretty good, and it was cool to finally get a Superman vs Batman dream match scenario on a video game but holy smokes, this was a far cry from the Injustice video games later on (or even that one Mortal Kombat vs DC thing from like 2008).
