At the time people said Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were soulless 3D monstrosities and that Sonic never should've been taken away from 2-D sidescrolling. That combined with the CHAOs and VMUs on the Dreamcast confused a lot of people

No they didn't, you may have had some people say this shit then, but that was a slim ass minority. This wasn't even a debate until around Shadow (2005) or 06.

I'm a Sonic fan and I'm sick of them too, they're always the same thing, and pretty much always negative, if you only read those you'd think the franchise always had mediocre reception and a few fans that actually like it, and that's it's not one of the most iconic and well received trilogy of all time on Genesis, that spawned a huge fan following and even successful films. It's a pain.

Yeah, I get it, I heard you the thousand times you said the same thing before, you can dislike Sonic, but to twist that into it being bad, and trying to sound smart for sucking at it, it's just ridiculous.

At the time the general idea was the Sonic Adventure did what Mario 64 did to mario. Then you have stuff like that big tornado and snowboarding down the mountain, nothing like that in Mario 64. The loops you could sometimes get stuck on and they almost made it like master system auto loops but what could they really about that. Some complaints about camera but it was easier to move with L and R triggers, Mario 64 has a lot of automated cameras, its almost not a truely 3d explorable world in a way in some levels.

Played a bit of SA2 and its seems like a downgrade of SA1.

This, especially Game Cube kids, when you ask people what installment made them a Sonic fan, at least from my experience and perception over the years, most say either "Sonic 2" or "Sonic Adventure 2: Battle" and I think that say a lot about the Adventure titles as a whole to be fair.

I grew up in the 90s and 00s with the Sonic cartoons, comics, and Sonic 1 on the Master System as my only Sonic exposure. Playing Sonic Adventure 2 on the gamecube was absolutely crazy and awesome. It was just like an arc in the comics.

What? No one said this.

3-d sonic failed because the gameplay wasn't fun. 2-d sonic worked because it was a fun platformer with a ball-rolling gimmick, and actually took some amount of skill to get good. SA and SA2 did away with that and became an on-rails rollercoaster hold-up simulator, resulting in a worse Crash Bandicoot. SA and SA2 takes almost no skill whatsoever to play and win.

They could have just ripped off Mario64 is some ways, such as making how sonic moved and interacted with the environment as physics-based as possible, making exploration and platforming fun even if you were just fucking around doing nothing. They didn't.

It's inexcusable. Even the 3-d sonics before SA and SA2 had good concepts and fun elements, they could have combined. Merge aspects from Sonic R, Sonic Jam, Sonic 3-d blast, and you got a pretty fun game, especially if you can nail ball-rolling physics like they later did with Super Monkey Ball.

Bait, but I'll take it. At the time Sonic Adventure was generally considered awesome. People sometimes complained about stuff like Big's fishing, but everything complained about was exaggerated years later. It was after Heroes that 3D Sonic really got a bunch of hate as I recall, which got people to retroactively shit on Adventure more. Plus DX was a flawed port.
