Did it really need to be retranslated? It's mostly him talking about how an old man shouldn't keep doing this kind of activity. Also while SA does have a few faults here and there it's not enough for a whole new translation.

TV-N still seems to act blissfully unaware of or indifferent to SA's work. Recent quotes from their thread:
>GCX isn't on the bottom of the list, it's just one of the hardest things to time, translate, typeset and check over because it's really freaking long, there's a ton of onscreen text and Arino isn't the most distinct enunciator in the world.

>Thanks, GCX is always a bit of a slog to get through and I think we end up making the most mistakes in it because Arino's accent is difficult and after a while you just don't care anymore. If you're interested, there's always translation positions open~

That's the sign of people that love their work. Fan translation is a work of love and if you don't really care about it then you shouldn't do it. I can understand translating Game Center CX can be a tough task to do but if all you do is blame your poor work on the main character of the show then maybe you should do it.

There are some pretty blatant mistakes in those caps, but more than that they translate too directly (they lack localizations). That said, the Power Pad in that episode cost 2100 yen, not 2800, and the arcade in the Tamage had an atmosphere from Showa 40-Showa 50 (1965-1989), not the 40's-50's, so I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Imagine if the Let's Play subforum was caught in a transporter malfunction with a Japanese game show. Or if the guys on Top Gear decided to spend their hour trying to beat an old video game.

Each week comedian Arino Shinya goes into a conference room and is given an old video game. They won't let him leave until he finishes the game or they run out of time. He starts playing around 10am and he has until about midnight to beat the game. But Arino is not very good at video games. While he's a nerd he hasn't really played video games in a long time. So even easy games are an uphill battle for him.

Arino reacts to the games with a good-natured humor. He's cheerful in the face of the worst games. He's gets tripped up by the oldest tricks and then laughs it off. And when Arino manages to succeed his joy comes through.

When he's not playing that week's game Arino takes trips to local arcades, gets life lessons taught to him from old strategy guides by a monk, calls fans of the show for advice on beating other games, or other even more surreal things.

Good natured comedian is given a classic video game, and can't go home until he beats it. He is not very good at video games. Said games are often ball-bustingly hard. You should watch.

It might have confusing elements at first. It's a fake reality show, but it's real...it chronicles the fictional Game Center CX company, let by Shinya Arino of comedy duo Yoiko.

When he dons the uniform, he becomes the Chief, the Boss, the President...the Kacho. He was promoted to this position through grueling hardship, chosen by his loyal staff to be the man to do the hard work...to attempt to See the Ending. To get to the bottom of arcane hardware and software...to glorify retro gaming nostalgia in all its forms. The suit gives him powers, like when comedian SB Cohen becomes Borat. It's rarely laundered properly just like his.

He has an anime over-the-top style about his gameplay and preparation. Animation and Japanese cartoon style theme songs have been writ for his glory. He is afraid of dragons. His greatest enemies are flying birds. He cannot master the edge jump.

That's not a normal vehicular activity.

That led me to believe that GCCX involved someone doing stupid shit to/with retro video games. I assumed he was an aggressive Conservative like the Top Gear people.

I had no idea what Top Gear was, but it sounded cool so I checked Arino out. The thing that hooked me was just how much everyone seemed to be having it was awesome. The side segments and the music during them got me addicted to.
There was one certain song I heard play during one of the trips they were on that I wanted so badly, it plays once while he's playing a lever game, and once while he's playing a RC car race game with an AD.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1D8vckA4U7K

I searched high and low for the soundtracks and I seemed to have found EVERY song with the exception of this one, there was a youtube playlist, and ffshrine song list, none of them had this song in it. That's the thing about the music in this series, it's hard as HELL to find.

Let me guess:

I'd say that one of these "unique" games is definitely Tant-R. The other one I assume is a kusoge. I'd say it's Saint Seyia, Space Hunter or Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

The sequel that Random Stranger mentioned is Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll. The only other unsubbed challenge where Arino plays a sequel is Donkey Kong Country 2 and that's three-parter. It has to be Flying Dragon.

As for that "dreamlike machine" text box, I think it's from Detective Saburou Jinguuji: Shinjuku Central Park Murder Mystery episode because Famicom Disk System that the game was on crapped out halfway through the challenge.

God, I'm bored.

/v/. I take year long breaks from the board, and one time when I came back (beginning of 2013 maybe) I kept seeing pictures of Arino wondering what it was all about. I thought the idea seemed entertaining and found my way to the SA thread where I downloaded episodes for familiar games like DKC, Mario 64, and some others. Turned out I really liked it.

It's a shame that I've seen everything that's subbed now, though. Instead of having a seemingly endless supply of videos, now I have to watch reruns before seeing something new. Not like I mind though.

I don't remember how, but I ran into TV-Nihon's releases on Youtube. At that point Metroid was their latest release and every new one they made took several months to be released. I'm glad that new fans won't have to go threough that anymore, but it kind of pisses me off when some anons are crying after just a week of subbing inactivity.
After TV-N practically stopped after the first "two" seasons, I completely forgot about the show for at least a year. Then I found out somewhere (probably /a/) that SA had had subbed some episodes so I marathoned everything I could find. However, I disliked how they did episodes in truly random order (sometimes resulting in spoilers) and I was taking Japanese courses at the university, so I started watching the raws chronologically.

Sept. 11th, 2006 - AmeTalk: Gundam Comedians - Subbed by J-BUROGU

It's an episode of a comedy show that picks a new theme every episode (pro-bowling fans, shyness, etc.), then invites appropriate comedians to appear on the show and talk about that theme. Skip to the 21-minute mark in this video for Arino's best moment, when he's showing off parts of his personal Gundam collection.

The pun there uses the word 'share (sha ray, meaning pun/play on words)' and the cafe's name 'Charade'. A more literal translation would have been "How's about the punny Chief visits Charade?", but that would kill joke IMO.

From Producer Kan's twitter:

We're looking for games that you want Arino to attempt revenge on at the Budokan! Either games or characters are okay. Send your idea to:

I get home dead tired from work and see a translation request for a pretty short Youtube video? Nostalgic up here!

N - Narrator A - Arino - M - Maruyama (developer)

N - From Game Center CX, which is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary this year, we bring you this!

N - The awaited-for third original game based on the show will be sold on the Nintendo 3DS!

N - It's name is "Game Center CX: Arino of 3rd Street."

N - The game will recapture the feel of retro games that captured children's hearts back in the day.

N - Chief Arino suggested many ideas for the game's development.

A - They had this mirroring thing in Price of Persia that flipped the left and right controls, maybe have somethin' like a mirror stage.

A - If you had that kinda thing I think it'd be interesting.

N - The game that used that idea is..."Rumi and the Magic Broom".

N - An action game where you defeat enemies by cleaning,.

N - The Chief tries it out himself.

M - The Magician will come out as you play, so if you could just let yourself get hit by his wave. If you don't do this then right and left won't...

A - Whoa, look at him go! Amazin'! He's so fast at cleaning!

M - So when you get hit by that, the controls get mirrored.

A - Oh, it's backwards now. For real.

N - If you're hit by the Magician's attack, the controls for right and left are reversed. This game's 'mirror trap' is born.

N - His next idea is...

A - The 3DS has this little mic you can blow into, right?

M - Right

A - If you could use that when it's dangerous and go "fuuu" and blow into it.

M - Oh! Oh, I see!

N - The game that uses this idea is "Wing Hero". A nostalgic side-scrolling shooter.

M - When you're crashing, if you blow into the mic, the wind will rise and you'll recover.

A - You use it when you're hit?

M - Now! Now! You see?

A - Oh!

>> No.1071580

>>1071576

N - If you blow into the microphone, you can escape dangerous spots. An original trick born from the Chief's idea!

N - Additionally, we'll be showing you portions of games that have upgraded quality and composition!

N - "Saurus Boy"! You gain various abilities by changing dinosaur costumes.

N - Explore the large maps using your various abilities.

N - "The Hidden Treasures of Soma"! You aim to find all of the hidden coins within the time limit.

N - An action puzzle game that requires strategy.

N - A block breaking-style competitive sports game, Break Shoot!

N - An outstanding game filled with exhilaration of using your special attacks!

N - A game where you dodge blocks and patiently keep climbing named "Keep Climbing, Son"!

N - A surprisingly deep game where you have to remember to keep extending the ladder.

N - Filled with various advances from the previous works, please look forward to "Game Center CX: Arino of 3rd Street"!

Related to translating, but I think I've dealt with the last of the mess my former co-worker left me with, so I should be able to get back on Karnov seriously next week (not just a minute or two a day).

I don't think an RPG would work out too well. When Arino takes upwards of 10 hours to clear platformers and action games I can't imagine how long he'd take to clear an RPG. I guess he did clear Shiren the Wanderer, though it's not all that similar, it was kind of boring.

>> No.1076191

Arino would take over 50 hours to beat a good DraQue, he admitted it. Kibe was abrupt in cutting off all possibility, I find it one of his "rudest" moments (no one's actually rude to the Chief, but the abrupt cut off was something you'd expect the Chief to do to Kibe).

They'd need to find out what went wrong with the Ocarina of Time episodes, and film a good RPG with these problems fixed. One thing that comes to mind is the second that AD started playing Lon Lon Ranch instead of the Chief, entire 2 hours was ruined for me.

I say have Suda and Taniizawa hook up screen recording software and hardware on the Chief's home rig, and have Abe set up a few angles. Suda rigs the mics. I have no idea how they pay Arino or if he actually brings work home with him like this. The cozy vibe of the SMB3 episode is something I'd like to see again though.

Also, Abe drinks Nakayama's beer and has a sleepover during the 24 Hour Lemmings broadcast. The part is subtitled as part of a 50 minute highlight reel by SA.

>One thing that comes to mind is the second that AD started playing Lon Lon Ranch instead of the Chief, entire 2 hours was ruined for me.

Another would be him solving puzzles, though there wasn't much of that in LttP either I guess. I'm guessing there could've been a lot of content, or if Arino's like me, there's that few seconds where a puzzle "clicks," and those few minutes trying to figure out what the hell to do which would get boring fast.

Also the fact that AD Emoto (was it Emoto?) played like half of the game for him without any progress journal or something.

- honorifics
- colours everywhere

But it's also weebs fault, I saw them bashing some group for not doing karaoke.

"Itadakimasu" is the polite form of the verb "itadaku", which means "to aquire". The "itadakimasu" form is said before a meal as a super common "ritual" or whatever you'd call it, but this has no real connection to the literal meaning of the word, and is just "something we say before a meal because that's just how it is".
There's no real way to "translate" it, all you can do is replace it with something that sort of fits the situation and leave it at that. "Bon appetit", etc. isn't exactly IDEAL, but it sort of gets the idea across, as least. It's just one of those foreign things that don't HAVE western equivalents.

OK, you guys would be the knowledgeable ones here. So, when I'm watching episodes of Gamecenter CX there seems to be like three different types of subtitling efforts: one is like leaves a bunch of stuff untranslated, like kachou, instead of translating it as chief; then there's one that just uses way too much internet vernacular, that from my amateurish understanding of Japanese, isn't all that accurate; then there's a group of episodes that are done quite well, or seem to be, there' nothing noticeably annoying in them.

Though all 3 efforts are light years ahead of any efforts I've seen of subbing anything from Chinese, be it fans or professional subtitlers.

I disagree. People who say their graces before a meal predominantly do so because of personal belief or respect for a religion. But good luck finding a modern Japanese person who treat "itadakimasu" as anything more than "that thing we say before we eat because that's just what we do".

>I tend to translate it as "Thanks for the food."
That works too. Its mostly about reading the situation and coming up with something that sounds reasonably natural to say in English.

The trouble with a really determined shitposter on 4Chan is that they can anonymously reply to themselves, pretend to be way more angry or upset than they really are, and also pretend to be any of the "thread regulars" that isn't associated with a tripcode.

If you care about keeping these threads focused on fan projects, sub releases and tracking down raw files, you have to NOT REPLY TO *and* REPORT the posts which threaten to derail things (INCLUDING normal posts that react to the shitposts in some way). It won't be fun for them anymore if they only have themselves to talk to.
