I think it's somewhat better, partially because permadeath doesn't add anything to the game other than wasting your time.
It also has an option to grind if you're a pussy and you can actually go around the towns like in a typical JRPG.
FE girls are much more cute though and I prefer mounted units over centaurs.

2 is objectively a better game. 1 has some elements that might be tedious or frustrating (choke points, maps that are 100% forest/mountains, only the main character picks up items from chests, so you constantly have to shuffle items to other members just to open a chest, stat jank, new recruits are under-leveled, and probably some others) but all in all, they're kind of small gripes. some of the battles/events/places are kind of memorable though, so a lot of people view it fondly. playing 1 first will make 2 stand out so much more as you appreciate all of the polish and fixes it has (items from chest go to next available person/slot, experience rolls over on level up, better map design, better recruit balance/variety, fully traversable overworld so nothing can be left behind in a previous "chapter", etc).
