oh damn I don't think they had the entire HG/SS overworld here the last time
anyway,
https://www.nesdev.org/wiki/Tricky-to-emulate_games
does anything like this exist for other retro consoles? It's interesting to read even if I only understand parts of it.
>This is probably the hardest game to emulate among the most popular NROM games, which are generally the first targets against which an emulator author tests their work. It relies on JMP indirect, correct palette mirroring (otherwise the sky will be black; see PPU palettes), sprite 0 detection (otherwise the game will freeze on the title screen), the 1-byte delay when reading from CHR ROM through PPUDATA (see The PPUDATA read buffer), and proper behavior of the nametable selection bits of PPUSTATUS and PPUADDR. In addition, there are several bad dumps floating around, some of which were ripped from pirate multicarts whose cheat menus leave several key parameters in RAM.

Used to love this site like 15-20 years ago. It was one of the best places for GBA/DS scene information, and had an autistically curated database of rom dumps, cheat databases, flashcart resources, fucking everything you'd need.
Sometime between then and now, they questioned the legality of hosting that information, so everyone who mattered fucked off. Now it's a cesspit with the occasional guide, but anything of worth is developed and hosted elsewhere. Tragic place.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Your favorite game might have an incredibly detailed section all to itself, but more often than not it won't. It's a great resource if your game has been covered extensively, but otherwise you're probably safer with a gamefaqs page.
There's a similar wiki called the Codex Gamicus that seems pretty decent, but I'm not as familiar with it.
Dedicated wikis are a crapshoot because some of them are pretty great, especially the Doom one, but the majority of them are Fandom cancer. It's unfortunate.

Not a website on its own, but still noteworthy

http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=280151

Here's a fanfiction about what would have happened if the SNES CD came out which is hundreds of forum posts long. I read through maybe the first alternate year before I stopped reading it. I have heard, though, that shit gets insane; some may call it schizo.

Check out RayMap:
2D games: https://raym.app/maps_r1/
3D games: https://raym.app/maps/
The focus is on Rayman games, but there's also lots of others here, like the Crash and Spyro GBA games, some Klonoa games, and various other games. Note that some of the stuff you might expect to see on the 3D viewer, like Klonoa 1, are actually on the 2D viewer.
Here's a video showing off the 2D viewer:

Same, I keep telling myself "I should do a huge backup of what I want in case it gets taken off the internet at some point" and I never actually get around to it, I'm a lazy bastard even for my hobbies, there's no real hope for me anymore...

I started reading an interview for Ace Attorney 3 from 2002 for the original GBA version, and part-way through, Hideo Kojima ends up interviewing Shinji Mikami. It was interesting to see two game developers sort of talking shop, but what I didn't expect to find in an Ace Attorney 3 interview was Kojima revealing that he wanted to do a Metal Gear game for the GBA. Wasn't expecting to learn that little fact.
