Figured out reloading minigame for now, a weapon overlay layer lights up pixels to show progress and a switch case on an integer checks if you press right click at the right time, no more inventory flags. Being an overlay instead of a hud element might be a bit hacky but at least it will always scale with the screen and it can be moved around with a cvar, probably. With more psprite calls I gave each gun an inherited dynamic light, with flash sprites in another layer, and recoil that pitches the camera gradually over 3 frames. Also made weapon switching completely instant since I've been on a Quake 1 bender and it meshes better with the small clips of most guns
I wonder if the balance makes sense to anyone but me, but I still need to make RL and BFG, and class abilities. I have an idea of what functions they should call but I need to take a glance at metadoom's code or something to make them reusable

Pretty much all of the doom and build engine games. He has the same abilities as all the classic protagonists (walk and shoot) and also has jumping and crouching, which doomguy doesn't. The exception might be Strife, cause he would insult some random and softlock himself.
Since he has the ability to walk backwards, he would also do just fine on all Serious Sam games.
He would get along with Sam. Duke will either love him or hate him, no in between.

Not a huge thing, but I got explosive barrels in Malice to bounce a bit before exploding like those in Doom. Malice seemed want to retain a bit of Doom's feel despite being on the Quake engine, so it seems fitting. May need to tone it down a bit though.
Barrel health has also been reduced from 120 (over half a mag from the pistol) to 40 so they're actually worth shooting now.

There we go. This was great. Fun meaty fights, nothing too hard or nutty but very welcome, better use of those hammers.
The weapon remixing was fun beyond one thing: That plasma rifle was benched once I found the railgun, and the balance between the pistol and SMGs both using bullets felt better. This was also a continuous run though, so I'm sure I'll be appreciating it more when I replay through pistolstarts.

Was worried that the effect wouldn't be shown in blurry motion, perhaps it did. To put the record straight, the wad is not mine but from Monster Hunter Ltd (also Bauhaus) mapper and is called The Red Line. Last level plays weird and is drudging to compare with previous others, but Didy still has the talent for shapes and setpieces on display. Guess I wore myself down on this one with the odd layouts and equally matched tough encounters.

DE/2016 had this problem where regular fire is worse than alt. Like 90% of time you’re not using regular.
Halo CE plasma pistol altfire is powerful but regular was just as good. The trade off is time and more battery usage. You can have rapid fire or one power shot.

I think that’s pretty neat.

I think it should work in zandro as well. The only important part making sure your projectiles aren't +NOBLOCKMAP my default.

In GZDoom you have the luxury of event handlers though where you can apply that as well as health or whatever on missiles you don't even replace, such as those in a monster replacement mod loaded with your gameplay mod.

Hey, TurokDooM guy here, haven't posted an update in a long time due to significant life changes plus my old computer dying. I finally managed to extract data from my old drive some weeks ago and salvaged old work data. Due to my current career taking a lot of time, I probably won't finish the project to completion, but I'll likely release a working demo or release the project out as-is sometime before March for someone else to pick it up. I'll include a small project outline for what I intended the full single player campaign to be. For now, I'm releasing the Adon NPC as a standalone. Adon was intended to be a dialog NPC/quest giver as well as an endgame optional boss. I admit her code is quite jumbled as she's be given a lot of abilities. If someone can polish it up or even add more to her that'll be fine (included are the .blend work files)

Map objects:
(3101) adonevent1 - meant to be a dialog object, she just stands idly with some animations
(3105) adon_boss - very tough with large health pool, test in a wide open area
(3107) DeadAdon - she's just taking a small nap...

notes: her 3D super beam attack doesn't look all that great if it's fired at an angle that isn't 0 degrees and I haven't been able to correct the pitch adjustments on the 3d model even though there is a flag that is supposed to do just that.
As she was extracted from a project to become a standalone, some object names may seem odd (i.e. some soundnames were also used for player weapons)

NTA but the only way to do brightmaps this bright on Woof~ is SoftFX. It look cool but it replaces some colors in the palette to achieve this effect so depending on the wad things might get fucked. I wouldn't call it "modern fps" but War Rooster is low tech, by a guy who's obviously passionate about gun history and the chaingun-replacing M16 is more ammo efficient than usual so it competes with the shotguns as a longterm workhorse

Might open some shortcut. The switch might be thematically related to the door. Fuckton of other ways.
It's not a rocket science, but it's a lost art, like some ancient aliens technology only a few chosen mappers understand.

It's good. Coming from DOOM it'll feel a lot slower due to how spongy the enemies can be and how weak that makes your weapons feel. It also has more monsters in general, compared to DOOM, which add to the overall slogginess.
Good game, do play it even if it's just to know how's like. You'll probably enjoy it quite a bit if you into the setting and then suffer forever knowing that it'll never receive the same love as DOOM does.

It's slaughter-lite (and not even the map but just this specific fight), the kind of gameplay you can find in the BTSX series or Skillsaw's maps. I think it's good, but mechanically inferior to Doom. The best parts of it are shared by both games. The biggest problems being that the majority of enemies are too tanky and not threatening enough and that the weapons aren't distinct enough in their unpowered forms. The combat feels primitive in a way similar to Doom 1, which makes me think it could have been more popular among mappers if Raven made a direct sequel in the doom engine rather than Hexen, which somehow has even worse combat. Personally, I just really like the idea of a fantasy fps.

That commercial tie in promotional quake mod was fucking sick.
It actually captures the feeling of cyberpunk that so many games have failed over the past few years.

It has problems mainly with the AI getting stuck on the detailed environment objects. I think quake is more used to enemies having simple clear paths to the player. And it's easy in the open areas to just stand back and snipe far away enemies BUT cool weapons, cool models and enemies and textures. What a fucking cool little project.

I really hope the Quake community mapper trannies do a map jam using that model/texture pak cus id love to see another dozen+ levels from that theme.

I think it's cool when game journos write about mods that aren't Brutal Doom or based on memes, but I wish it didn't come in the form of a misleading title that makes it seem about all the unused content released over the years.
Plus, the fact that Romero still wanted to share Doom assets but Bethesda told him "no, fuck off" circa 2016.
Maybe it's something to do with stuff like "lost media" and "preservation" becoming more noticeable topics and a side effect is it not feeling as genuine as it should be.

Someone came to this general years ago and made a post that was nothing more than a .zip containing various unused textures for each of Quake's level themes. Shortly after, some mappers did a jam centered around using these textures. I never saw anyone bring this up outside of that or even question where these textures came from. I still wonder who did it.

While this happens a lot, it doesn't feel as cynical as rebooting something like Syndicate into a console FPS.
In a weird twist, I'm also finding out that the mod promoting the new game is closer to the gameplay of the original: This is a mech shooter that plays less like Mechwarrior and more like Shogo. It's pretty fun so far, even has a first-person mode.

Hey, babel dev, if you're alive, there's a VM abort with Babel monsters. Happens with A_CacoSpread because A_SpawnProjectile will return a null pointer if the attack occurs at point blank range, thus failing to spawn anything.

triggering lots of pain chances on big demons while also clearing imps/chaingunners better than any of the lower slot weapons is definitely an important part of a plasma rifle, especially in modern stuff where it's intentionally given to you in crowd control scenarios too cramped for the rocket launcher. That's why I made my AEK stacked in pretty much every way a doom weapon can be. plasma fire rate, 2 shots for imps and chaingunners, and one in four shots have 100% pain chance. A full clip will comprehensively ruin one popup archvile's day or keep you unbothered while focusing it in the open
