Difficult question for anyone to answer - no one knows you or what you like. RPGs of that era are long because they're designed to be. Levelling up characters means repeating random fights over and over and gaining experience so you cross a threshold which expotenially increases each time but you can win fights quicker etc. This means repeatign the same sort of thing ver and over before your story moves forward. Does that remotely sound your sort of bag?

It's kind of a shame how often people show the pixel remaster version now instead of the original. You see ot used for wikis and articles all the time now.

It's the most entertaining to me personally. Gameplay is still great even if FFV's job system is preferred by many. I like how VI gives you a lot of the same options without grinding for them, makes it easier to play around. The game is full of secrets and I like the open-ended second half. Story is cool without taking itself too seriously or interrupting the game too much. The music is best in the series. Coolest character and monster designs for me too. FFIV through IX are all amazing though, mostly a matter of personal preference. It's a popular choice, but there's always been arguments over which is best.

All those characters are interesting though. A secret yeti berserker character isn't deep or developed, but it's interesting. Little things like seeing him appear early in the game ate cool too.

Gogo being a mysterious character found inside a giant worm is interesting as fuck, along with how he works gameplay-wise. Not using this to say VI > VII or anything, just saying I appreciate the variety of characters. VII did cool stuff too, like hiding Yuffie in forests.

It's not a long game by RPG standards, it's like 30-40 hours long. Final Fantasy VI is a great first RPG. Very good and not overly long or difficult. I'd say start with it or Final Fantasy VII. If you want a non-FF RPG, Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG would be good too. I started with Phantasy Star IV personally.

Honestly though, RPGs aren't that hard to get into, you could jump into something like SaGa Frontier even if it'll be confusing for a few hours. Just play whatever looks cool to you.

Out of the first 9 games (where I stopped) it's not my personal favorite but overall I think it's the best one. It does a very good job of not having one main character but having each character have their own storyline that ties through and the story overall is really good. It also strikes a good balance between each character feeling unique having their own special abilities in battle, but there's enough customization that if you want to use a character you think is cool but their special ability isn't great you can still make them useful.

Those who actually take the time to figure out how the game works can get through it with minimal grinding. I'm playing through FFVI right now. It's good, combat is fast-paced and the menuing is intuitive and easy. Lots of minigames and events as you progress to break up the monotony.

With FFVI you really don't want to grind, especially not early game, because it's got a goofy system that keeps most of your stats from going up from leveling. instead you should wait until you start getting Espers. there are certain ones you can equip and that'll give you one stat bonus at level up. This is kinda annoying to keep track of, in practice it's a lot of extra menuing checking your characters EXP every few battles and making sure to equip the Esper that gives you a stat bonus just before each character levels up, and then unequipping it right after to swap it to the next character leveling up.

6 wasn’t good
It’s overrated and, like any game hyped up by midwits with no introspection, is only highly regarded because of when it came out and at what point in their human development its dickriders first played through it.

>The characters are shallow and forgettable and have boring designs
>The battle system is broken and all over the place, making over half of the available spells and abilities and items just plain useless
>The story is just the same tired evil empire Star Wars ripoff that they’ve always done, and anything involving Magicite was immediately mogged to oblivion by 7’s Mako/Materia, both as a plot and gameplay element
>The soundtrack is overrated, Opera song isn’t even good and sounds like shit- mogged by Chrono Trigger on its own home console

I can go on and on about how it’s just the dullest experience imaginable. Is it FF2 levels of bad? No, of course not. But is it the savior of the franchise like the crusty fat 40 year olds in here would have you believe because they played it religiously as kids/teens during the only part of their lives where they were happy? Fuck no, this shit is like FF9-tier at best.

People always say this shit about games they want to call overrated, but it can be applied to any popular game. Every game was new and played by 12 year olds at some point. I've heard it said about Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy VII, Halo, and a bunch of others. But plenty of people played those years after they came out and still loved them. JRPGs haven't changed all that much over the years when you get down to it, so I don't see as many people reacting to old ones like they do to Goldeneye or something.

>1-3
Barely have any character development
>4
Very basic genric characters with aome clumsy pathos

Also basic characters but more goofy
>7
Cloud is amazing, having a semi psycho unreliable narrator for a main character is very interesting. Red XIII is quite interesting. Tifa has little real development and if you think about what they do give you enough she's kind of an asshole. Barrett is a caricature, Aeris is completely flat, Yuffie is mostly just annoying.
>8
Has one of the most awesome characters in any JRPG but you barely play as him and for most of the game stuck as his mopey amnesiac son and his dorky amnesiac friends
>9
Also has some great characters but you already indicated you think they're shit so we can gloss over that.

theres two wholly different design philosophies in the mainline FF series
theres games that built off 1s open-ended freedom to build your party and go wherever you want (usually at the cost of narrative depth), and the other style that built off of 2s more focused plot (at the cost of player freedom)
as far as 6 goes, its prolly the best version of the latter that they ever did
some might say 9 and thats fair too tho imo thats more an attempt to marry the two styles than one or the other

my issue is that these narrative-based FFs are a chore to replay with their lengthy cutscenes, and your party composition at any given point being mostly determined by wherever you happen to be in its story
again, that DOES let the devs have a lot more room to tell a big epic story
but compare that with 5, which imo is the most replayable FF to date, and also the one that holds up best under modern scrutiny in every other aspect aside its narrative. 5 is admittedly thin in the story department, but its unparalleled freedom and perfect job system gives the tired JRPG formula a new lease on life

tl;dr
most FF/JRPG fans are there for the story, and 6 is the perfect sweetspot where its story is rather compelling, but not yet "jumped-the-shark" like later FFs (7, 8, 10 etc)

FF6, even with the somewhat mangled SNES translation, tells a story thats less fucktarded and full of weird plot holes like why does tifa just nod along for 3 discs with these crazy stories cloud keeps telling about being an ex super soldier?
also, instead of aeris dying and then you immediately go snowboarding cuz lol, most of FF6s tense moments are left to hang. you failed. someone died. a guys entire family and hometown were poisoned to death. theyre dead and arent coming back and theres no golden saucer to comfort you.
even with its far simpler sprite gfx, FF6 manages to feel more dramatic.

gameplaywise theyre very very similar. id give FF7 the edge there as materia was sometimes tedious/grindy, but still fun to level up and mess with. also tons of challenge/postgame stuff to do since they werent limited by cartridges
but regardless, FF6 nails the JRPG formula so hard that you still see echoes of it in the genre to this day. the series, itself, frequently rips FF6 off ffs. every mainline game afterwards feels like them trying to re-capture some of that games magic in one way or another

Amazing sountrack.
Excellent, and due to pixel art, timeless art direction.
Great story.
Great cast of characters.
Last big JRPG before the bloat set in. (a relatively thorough playthrough is something like 25 hours. A normal playthrough might be 20 hours or less.)

No question, 5 has the best gameplay, and the best replayability. The music (except for Battle on the Big Bridge) is good, but not great. The graphics even seem a bit uninspired. The characters and story are paper-thin. But, the gameplay is just so deep, and fun, you could replay that game a million times.

I don't disagree, I just think that overall the characters in FFV are not really developed. Just because prior entries do a worse job does not make this true. For FFVI-->IX, you have superior story compared to FFV, but generally worse game mechanics. For FF1-->IV, you have similar paper thin story / characters, and also worse game mechanics. This really makes FFV stand out from the field. From a pure gameplay perspective, it just can't be beaten. From a story or music perspective, most of the latter half of the retro titles just do it better. The early titles definitely aren't bad, but there's no a lot of reason to revisit them unless you're a big FF fan.

Really don't understand why they haven't hopped on the classic server bandwagon with FFXI like all other mmos have been doing.
